Gurwin Jewish ~ Fay J. Lindner Residences's Online Review Report Card

My grandmother has been staying at this facility for a few weeks now and the worst part is the food. I'm talking worse than the TV dinners we can give her to keep in her room. No nutrition. It's sad because we wanted to keep her in a place for her safety, but the food may put us in a position to move her to another facility.

Went for a tour yesterday. The place was FILTHY! We were shown a vacant apartment that had garbage strewn on the floor, including used Q-tips. The carpets in the common areas were all badly stained. Not all the staff has been vaccinated and, while we were informed residents are “required to wear masks, except while eating and engaging in activities”, I observed a large number of people hanging around unmasked. The facility has a decidedly institutional feel and a bad smell. There are almost 180 residents, which adds to the impersonal warehousing vibe. Very unimpressed and deeply saddened. Assisted living is quite expensive. I would expect nice, clean facilities with staff who actually care about those they are hired to serve.

I have taken care of a client 1 day. I’m not too thrilled with this place the care is mediocre ....and I’m only here 1 day imagine? This women is over 90 and they don’t take this into consideration...I say let her be don’t force her into doing things ! I sense a bit of indifference. They are all jaded...😡

My mom was admitted to this facility for rehab on Dec 18th. On Dec 25th or 26th we were notified 3-4 employees of Gurwin Commack were tested positive for covid19 in addition to my moms room-mate. Needless to say my mom and my family are in frantic and can’t get her out of there fast enough. To me this is absolutely despicable and worthy of a truly negative post. I am appalled that employees of these type of facilities to this day after all the needless deaths still can’t put social gathering or safety at the forefront of importance while doing everything they can to protect the seniors or loved ones while in the care of Gurwin. I confronted one of the personnel at Gurwin and asked how could something like this happen still to this day, and their response was, we can do everything within our powers to control what goes on inside these walls but we can’t control what people do outside. Well to those people that put the holidays before safety, social gathering before safety, and to those nay sayers that say this isn’t real, I hope you get through this unscathed, because if and when it smacks you right in your face, shame on you, because I’ll be the first to say good for you!

My Dad moved into the assisted living in May 2019. We could not be more pleased with the care he is receiving. His quality of life is better than it has been in years. His apartment is spacious and bright. The aids and staff at the wellness center truly look out for him and call the family if anything seems wrong. There a plenty of activities to keep him busy and they are open to suggestions. We asked for some different types of movies and they are accommodating. The grounds are beautiful and maintained regularly. My brother is there weekly and I am there every 6 weeks and neither of us have found anything to complain about. We chose Gurwin because dialysis is right here, but knowing what we know now, I would have chosen here anyway.

Just went to Gurwin's  Annual Calendar Reveal luncheon today. What a joy!!  The staff put this together for the residents who are groomed and photographed for the calendar. They had so much fun!!  My mom and dad came to Gurwin 8 months ago but my dad passed away after only 4 1/2 months. The out pouring of love and sympathy and caring and cOmpanionship from residents and workers alike to my mom was so moving. The staff are genuinely caring people and I'm feel blessed that my mom is there.

The reasons we chose The Gurwin for my mom  are because it's an enhanced assisted Living which I'll explain later, it's culturally familiar to her, the size of her living space is very good at a decent cost in comparison to what the Altria's and Bristol's etc... offer, the location is good for the family, there are tons of activities, the other levels of care like in patient rehab are right there, and the staff at all levels have their hearts in the right place.  It's not as fancy as some of the places I've seen, but the warmth, familiarity, and responsiveness  of the staff, makes me feel extremely comfortable in having my mom be there. An assisted living, with an enhanced level of care, means that they are required to be staffed with LPN's 24 hr, and my mom can still live there if (or when) she requires more care among other benefits. The Gurwin also has clinical professionals on site throughout the week,  like internists/pa 4x/wk who have legit, active offices nearby, psychiatry weekly/monthly, therapy weekly, podiatry, hearing, eye, lab, x-Ray etc... The only visits I have to manage outside of the Gurwin now  are the specialists, like her cardiologist for her pacemaker checks. My mom did not have to change her specialists because her Stony Brook physicians come to the new Stony Brook Pavilion which is about 3 minutes away. Commack is an incredible town.  My mom is blossoming at the Gurwin and in many respects, so are my sisters and I. We've gotten relief from the worry when she lived alone and more relaxed time to devote to our families. She is safe, well cared for, and comfortable there.  The Gurwin is Jewish oriented, but there are non-Jewish residents there. A church is right next to their property. The bus takes residents to church on Sundays. It is Kosher. My mom says that the food is very good. In fact, a little too good so that she's gained a little weight. She's recently decided to cut back on the desserts, lol. This is so different from when she lived by herself after my dad died in 2013. They had been married for 52 years. To my surprise, there are quite a few men. That lends itself to a nice balance.So far, we are very satisfied with the Gurwin!

The staff at Fay J are so sweet and caring. The pay is good, the Benefits are great, my schedule is perfect and accommodating for me. My department works so well together. I can honestly say I love coming to work everyday.

As a visitor, the staff is very nice and the facilities are clean and welcoming
