List of Island Nursing And Rehab Center, A Gurwin Community's Reviews
My mom was at Island Nursing. She was there for approximately 6 years. Went in 2015. At first care was good. The physical therapists at that time were great. Chris and Christine are two that I remember. Nurses were just okay. Had to keep on top of them. Aides were good for a couple of years. Then an RN that worked at Mather too recruited all the good aides and they left to work at the hospital. Not that I blame them. Then that RN mysteriously didn't work at Mather anymore! Beverly was a good nurse. She was transferred to second floor and no longer took care of my mom. All the good employees didn't last through my mom's years there. No continuity of care. Today that is everywhere. Unfortunately, every place is short staffed. When my mom passed in September 2020 there was still no indoor visiting. I could not monitor her health. I had purchased a nucleus care iPad which was always faced down on her tray table so my mom could not watch her picture slideshow or answer our calls. I don't know how many times I had to call nurses' desk to pick up the iPad, which I am sure was annoying to them. The last thing I remember is my daughter going to pick up my mom's belongings. Everything was thrown in black plastic trash bags. Her live plants thrown in there dirt and all, along with my precious remembrance items that my mom made in recreation therapy. When my daughter arrived she was rudely told by a woman named Dahl, who I thought was our friend, she was not allowed to come in. My daughter knew that. She was just standing by the automatic doors. Dahl knew who she was and that my mom passed. Not even a, "I'm sorry for your loss." The nurse, Tracy, at the time on the third floor was even worse. She was rude to me on phone and never gave her condolences. Who does that! Think twice before going to island nursing and rehabilitation.
Thee worst place I’ve ever worked at. It was so bad, I never want to be a aide again. Overworked, understaff, disrespectful people in the offices and unhelpful aides. The people who sit in the office all day have no idea what’s happening and they lecture you for not having extra hands and legs.
The staff at this facility has treated my Mother with kindness, care and compassion. I have visited many times and each time I notice how the staff treats all the residences. It was a very hard decision to admit Mom into a facility and each day I amgreatful for all the care she gets.Thank youDarlene Caronia
Island nursing is by far the worse nursing home i ever worked at they don’t have any staff residents barely get the proper care and they’re over working the staff that’s there !!!! Only worked there for 4 weeks and because I’m very out spoken it became a problem for them making up stories on me and throwing me around staff spit on me they did nothing!
Based on the unprecedented challenges of the COVID pandemic, this nursing home deserves a shout out. I was fortunate that my parents were accepted there two years ago (my mum passed away on their second anniversary recently) into a spacious and large double room a few months before the pandemic ravaged nursing homes and I got to see the place in full swing! Islands, due to its extremely severe pandemic restrictions, continued to soldier on during the pandemic using Facebook video calls for residents and their loved ones to communicate between infrequent outdoor visits. Everyone at Islands, from the back office to the nursing and operations staff deserve a
After 4 weeks of rehab, for broken arms, my 91 year old mother-in-law was released. Her hygienic condition was deplorable! She smelled rancid, had a skin fungus, and her scalp was encrusted. The neglect couldn’t have been more obvious.
I would not recommend at this time The workers are great but they are understaffed I have seen so many people leave in the past year Visitation is a key factor for these residents and the pauses in visitation are happening much too often My mom has been here going on four years and since Gurwin took over I haven’t seen much improvement In my opinion They need to make visitation a main priority by staging several areas for visitation Indoors and outdoors Hoping things start to improve soon
Since in person visits haven't been allowed, we've been doing our best with window visits on the 1st floor. Somehow randomly today they decided to inform us of a new policy requiring appointments and that we have to leave or the police would have been called on us for trespassing. This facility could care less about the well being of their patients. All they care about is their $$$. Hopefully they won't delete this review to make themselves look like a 5 star facility.
PT/OT are wonderful. Nurses are helpful and courteous.
My moms been there over a year.No nursing home is ideal. This one is much better than most.

Selection Criteria
All the information you see here is based on our analysis of internet reviews across the seven major review platforms most used by consumers during their healthcare provider selection. The platforms we selected are Google, WebMD, Yelp, HealthGrades, Facebook, RateMDs, and Vitals. The analysis algorithm uses the compiled data of average score, recency of reviews, number of reviews, and the sentiment expressed in the written comments. It then assigns weight to each parameter based on the available research on how consumers use reviews in their doctor selection process. This report is designed to help identify the doctors with the best overall review score in an area and does not reflect the doctors' competence.
