List of John S. Shiau's Reviews
Dr. John Shiau, MD operated on me twice, once for spinal stenosis with vertebrae disc replacement and fusing, and second for sacroiliac fusion. Both operations went very well with very little pain and quick recovery time. I highly recommend him.
I have a serious urgent serious spine injury Every day I wake up I can’t make it , Dr. Shiau didn’t like my insurance or chart and got very nasty with me and yelled why are you here , ok where do you want me to operate on you ,.. I showed him the MRI and he yelled at me saying I don’t make sense He kept getting nasty so I won’t come back to his office. And Every doctor I visit they tell me don’t waist your time with him if he don’t like your insurance he’s very nasty with his patients ,and every doctor I visit they asked me why haven’t you did the surgery till now. I told them Dr Shiau got nasty and don’t want to discuss with me what’s wrong and what needs to be done and what’s the solution and his office keeps canceling my appointment and throwing me out for 15 years ,now I’m stuck taking a whole load of medication every day and every 2 weeks epidural Procedure and wait till the medicine kicks in , in order to get up off the ground and move .

at his Minimally Invasive Spine Center in NYC
Dr Shiau absolutely saved my life from the VA, not only did he do surgery on my spine but was very forth coming about other parts of my spine and told me they will only get worse over time! And when the other parts of my spine did in fact started to get worse he immediately saw me, ordered more tests and again performed more surgery to the other parts of my damaged spine! I would and have recommended Dr Shiau as a physician! And on top of that he has personally answered all of the emails I have sent to him over the years over concerns I’ve had about my back!
I had initially went to see a different doctor at RUMC. right at the end of that consultation that doctor told me he works with another surgeon that turned out to be dr shiau. I waited an hour and a half in his noisy, unprofessional waiting room. when I finally got to see dr shiau he danced around explaining the 'old fashioned' procedure for what I needed to be corrected. he then began to try to sell me on some 'minimally invasive' procedure where he would go through my side in order to get to my spine. when he was through explaining the procedure and showing me some grainy pictures I ran out of there determined never to let this man touch me again.
If you are in a hurry, Dr. Shiau is not for you. He gives each patient all the time they need and that is why he is running late sometimes. He is through and patient. Operated on me after messed up surgery from another doctor and no other surgeon would. Worth your time and wait to see him
He has such a great personality and his bed side manor is unbelievable. I know he’s an amazing neurosurgeon but he is an even better person. The staff is top notch!
I am a medical professional who works occasionally with Dr. Shiau so my experience may be a little different. I asked him to treat my mother because I know so much about him. He performed a minimally invasive fusion with excellent results. I chose him because he truly does minimally invasive surgery. From my experience, there are surgeons that say they do but always end up with recommendations for traditional surgery. He is also honest and is truly skilled at what he does.

Selection Criteria
All the information you see here is based on our analysis of internet reviews across the seven major review platforms most used by consumers during their healthcare provider selection. The platforms we selected are Google, WebMD, Yelp, HealthGrades, Facebook, RateMDs, and Vitals. The analysis algorithm uses the compiled data of average score, recency of reviews, number of reviews, and the sentiment expressed in the written comments. It then assigns weight to each parameter based on the available research on how consumers use reviews in their doctor selection process. This report is designed to help identify the doctors with the best overall review score in an area and does not reflect the doctors' competence.
