Winthrop University Hospital's Online Review Report Card

If I could give no star I would. Do not go to this hospital! After the NYU Langone takeover of Winthrop this hospital has turned to garbage. The service I received in the ER was disgusting. The system they run if you can even call it a system in the ER is extremely disorganized. The appearance in the ER is like out of the slums. A flustered and overwhelmed nurse checks you in at the front and then people wait in the hallway. No one actually moves to triage. I was there with chest pain for 40 minutes until someone actually gave me a bracelet. The combative nurse even documented the wrong symptoms at check-in and placed me sitting with covid patients. I was there in total for seven hours and about 30-60 minutes of actual real work was completed by any doctor or nurse. No specialist even came to check me out. It took about over an hour or two to even be discharged. They are very understaffed and very disorganized to the point of incompetent. This is a very unsafe hospital. People are going to get hurt going here. Do not go to this hospital for Emergency Care.

The ER is atrocious!!! DO NOT GO HERE!! NYU Langone with it's big money takeover of Winthrop has the worst ER!! Nasty overworked nurses, 3 doctor's on the floor you never see, wait time of 8hrs, for nothing, it's disgusting!! The staff are robotic and unempathetic. Perfect combination for someone to get hurt. It saddens me because I loved Winthrop, everything has changed. I really wish I could give this hospital no stars. This ER is dangerous and needs to be seriously checked out by Nassau County.

Update: I wound up going back, the guard apologized because he misunderstood. I was expecting to be waiting there for like 24hrs, but I was actually taken in relatively quickly (waited about 2 hrs). The PA was nice and I generally had a good experience (despite being in pain)I came to be seen and the guard at the main entrance tells me to walk all the way to the south entrance. Then the guy at the south entrance tells me to walk all the way to the 3rd avenue entrance. Literally I’m being shuffled back and forth. There’s something called signage, maybe they should try using it? I’m in a lot of pain but decided to go home and wait another day because I can’t deal with this so god forbid if I develop a fever overnight I can thank this place

If you go to the ER expect to wait at least 8 hours. Staff should be ashamed of its inhumane despicable treatment of patients. HORRIBLE place.

I don’t understand what happened to this hospital. I delivered children here and was always happy and thankful for the maternity floor, and NICU staff. If I had to rate on just NICU, PICU & Maternity, I would say 5 stars. It has been years since I’ve been to the hospital but the ER experiences are still HORRIBLE as they were when I was pregnant with my children. The ER staff always downplays symptoms, for example I was pregnant and they attempted to send me home. I began contracting prior to my 18th week of pregnancy and they dismissed my pain and sent me home. I was actually in early labor. Another incident almost cost me my life and the life of my unborn child. My doctor (Dr Levine) had to speak up for me. Labor & delivery left me in a room for hours as I cried and complained about severe pain. I could barely keep my eyes open, and told them I felt like I was dying. Three hours later, Dr Levine showed up, he took one look at me and rushed out the room. My husband heard him scold the entire team and I was rushed the care I should’ve received hours before. I still ended up delivering extremely early. So if you think about it, had I chosen a doctor that didn’t stand up for their patients, I would not be alive, nor would my children.Now my most recent visit in their ER department was not that big of surprise but I was hopeful in the staff. I was wrong, I left the hospital in the same condition I entered. The staff shows little to no empathy and dismisses what you say because they assume you have no knowledge of health. Or because they just want to rush you out to get paid for another patient to be there. I have all the names of the staff and will be taking my recent visit higher up. Do yourself a favor, do not go to this horrible ER unless you want bad bedside manner or staff talking down on you as if you’re making up your symptoms. I hardly doubt anyone would spend 15 hours in the ER unless they were really in need for care.

I used to hold this hospital in high esteem, but after stopping through the ER this evening my opinion has changed. They are so unorganized and they have patients sitting in the hallway of the entrance. I waited an hour, and up until that point they had only taken my name, temperature, and asked what brought me in. Then I was led to a chair in the hallway..where I waited until I got up and left! It's ridiculous the way they run the ER! Make renovations so patients can be accomodated. No one should be hearing why a patient is there, no privacy, lack of care, very uncomfortable for people who are already not feeling well. I wasn't about to sit there for another hour...

If it were possible, I would give this no stars. I wish I had read the reviews before I made the mistake of going to this place. I had very severe stomach pain, could barely stand up. The fear was that it was my appendix. Fortunately, it wasn't.My friend took me to this emergency department because my doctor is affiliated with NYU Langone. We waited hours before I was even triaged. After waiting 6 hours I was finally directed to the "Fast Track" room. Hours later the CT scan was finally done. More hours waiting. The doctor told me it wasn't my appendix and gave his diagnosis. But we had to wait until the radiologist reviewed the films. Another hour passed before that report came in. We had arrived at the hospital at 9:30 PM and it was very busy, but there was only one nurse and one physician's assistant on duty. Severely understaffed. I wasn't released until 9 AM the following morning. Never again.

Broken and dislocated pinky finger. ER visit. 11 hour wait. 5 minutes with ER physician. $14,232 bill. Oh wait- 3 X-rays also. Now the bill makes sense.

I came into the ER after I fell and hit my head. I told them I felt dizzy, nauseous and had a headache. I also have other medical conditions. They still made me wait more than 6 hours to see someone and then did nothing. I asked to speak to the manager after 3 hours and no one ever came. They just gave me the number of the complainant department. While I was there I saw a lady fall on the floor and no one came to help her so another patient had to catch her head from hitting the floor. Almost every staff member was curt or rude. Never go here. This will be my first and last time.
