Failure to properly treat his patient’s post operative infection. Resulted in death of the young patient.

Failure to properly treat a postoperative infection which resulted in sepsis and the death of my brother. My brother was being evaluated for a heart transplant, and in a delicate state. He had carotid artery surgery with DeRobertis and was poorly managed in postop. The wound was infected but the doctor wouldn’t the see him until 5 days later, pressed on the wound expelling large amounts of puss in a non sterile environment, and sent him home with an oral antibiotic prescription. He didn’t culture the puss and didn’t admit him or give him IV antibiotics. Negligence! The infection spread. My brother went to the ER and was admitted, but it was too late. He suffered in the hospital for 12 days fighting for his life, yet this Md did not come to see him. The medical team couldn’t find the source of the infection or get it under control. The result was multi organ failure from sepsis and death. He was only 53 years old.

Dr. DeRubertis noted a critical condition and got me treated immediately. He is an outstanding care giver in every way!

this is one of the best doctors i have been to.he did pretty serious surgery on me and did a great job.his team was also great helping to get me home office staff was great.doctor took a lot of time with family and answerd all questions.i will send people to see him.

I don't know how that's possible with these reviews but Dr. DeRubertis was very kind and knew what he was doing. I had clots on my leg and another hospital said is was a lost cause that I should amputate it. Another doctor recommended me to him and they put stents to get blood flow back and little by little it worked and I'm not in pain and walking. But I have to ajwYs have check ups well worth it since I was told I would have to amputate my leg

I had seen Dr. DeRubertis at UCLA back in 2008 for symptoms of venous insufficiency. When he advised that I did not have this, I asked him why I was experiencing these symptoms (e.g. swelling, leg "falling asleep" when sitting down, leg ached after a few minutes on a treadmill, etc). It wasn't what he said in response (which challenged all of these points), but "how" he said them, which was by responding rapidly, with a raised voice, stern expression and gestures. I felt that how he spoke to me was unprofessional and a little alarming. Needless to say, feeling very uncomfortable, this was my last visit with him. After reading the earlier review about him, it was actually much more alarming, but also that review resonated with me and my experience. My hope is that if he, or UCLA's Vascular Center management actually reads these reviews, that they take this feedback from a constructive perspective and consider things such as physician/nurse/medical team training so they can improve/correct patient care/interactions. This profession (as in many others such as police, fire fighters, etc) can oftentimes be very stressful, which makes it all the more relevant to provide training, especially with those who may not be aware of how they are presenting themselves to the patient population or to the general public.
