Dr. Bruce Heller is THE BEST!!! I have been seeing him for a couple of years now and he is fantastic. He is quick and to-the-point. He is a non-cosmetic dermatologist, so I know he’s not trying to upsell unnecessary Botox or laser treatments to me. He is very professional. And I absolutely LOVE his staff. This entire office is amazing.
I have been going to Dr. Bruce Heller for a few years now. He is a good doctor and has always prescribed the correct medicine. In the past I have been to dermatologists and have never been prescribed the correct medicine the first time - it is always trial and error which is absolutely ridiculous. Dr. Heller has years of experience and knows what to prescribe and I have always seen instant results. Why then the low rating? First, the front office is awful. They have never ever called me with test results, ever. And they lost the results from my patch test. They had a system change and they can't recover my patch test results, which was so so incredibly painful. I had a biopsy once and they never bothered to call for results. I had Staph infection and had to wait over a month and several follow ups and appointment at a different location to get results. Truly unacceptable. Second, Dr. Heller rushes through and keeps calling you back. The first time I went, he could have asked his assistant to do the patch test since he recommended it, and he recommends it to most patients - he still recommends it when I visit! So they should be ready to do it. But no, he called me back. So I went. Then I had to go back to get it removed. Then I had to go back for follow up. So I was expected to go 4 times within a few weeks. The second time I went with an issue, he could have done a biopsy which was required, but he asked me to come back for it. Biopsy doesn't take too long. Then they canceled my appointment the day before. By then Covid had hit so I understand, but at least give advance notice. I went to a different location where they did a biopsy on the spot and I got results back that the cells were pre-cancerous. Why not do the biopsy in the first meeting itself instead of calling me back every single time even though I told the front desk my issues while booking? The other office location had no issues and did it in the same appointment. Third, he speaks very fast and his assistant got the medicines wrong. Thankfully I was listening and challenged her info, and she confirmed with Dr. Heller. But it took more time for me to have to wait there. She was going to prescribe just one instead of the 2 medicines required, and the medicine she missed is more effective! Overall, Dr. Heller has a lot of experience but the office is poorly managed and he overbooks and doesn't give his patients enough time, expecting them to come back over and over. I saw the same trend at another location. The doctor there got my results instantly and followed up diligently, but she prescribed antibiotics after I had taken Dr. Heller's prescription and my infection was cured but came back. So I took another round of antibiotics. The other doctor advised not using Dr. Heller's ointment so I didn't. Then I had to do a phone meeting since I wasn't getting better. Then she called me back for another appointment to look at my infection after having already seen it once - so I met her, then did a video call due to Covid, then was asked to come back, but I was 2 hours away and nervous to go back due to Covid so skipped. Since I had Dr. Heller's ointment, I decided to use it and my infection is completely cured; I still have some scars but I am using the ointment daily. It has steroids but is that really worse than another course of antibiotics at this point? I was taking antibiotics for a month on and off, and the doctor was going to prescribe another round of new antibiotics. I can't do another round when the steroid ointment works much better. I am not very impressed with how the whole practice is run. And I wish Dr. Heller got himself a better system in place and stopped rushing his patients. He seems to have the knowledge but needs to spend more time with his patients instead of expecting people to come back over and over. Nobody should have to go back 4-5 times for every little thing, just 2 times should suffice. And what is the point of doing tests if you aren't going to call with results? I had a Staph infection and they didn't even have the results even one month later. My patch test results are lost, they keep saying the new system hasn't updated but for how long? I think someone should report them. How can they function like this, not even giving results?
I have never left a review for a doctor, but my experience with Dr. Heller and his office was so disappointing that I wanted to share. I went to his office after having a strange allergic reaction while traveling abroad. He ordered a variety of tests that he ensured was covered by my insurance. I took all the tests, went to the lab, receive a diagnosis - turns out 1) the diagnosis was SO WRONG (he said I was allergic to red meat, corn, and wheat, which are all untrue), and 2) I get a $1500 bill a few days later. I go back to try to talk to him - he first tries to order THE SAME TESTS before I explained why I was there and then after my explanation, he claims that “this has been happening a lot to my patients” and leaves it at that. I was never demanding, loud, or in any way difficult, and it’s really disappointing that I am brushed off and ignored - his practice just churns out patients and clearly has no empathy for the people they see.
Bruce Heller is excellent.
Don't recommend, mostly for the reasons stated by others here.
This office routinely runs 30-45 minutes late. Dr. Heller is nice and clearly knows what he's doing, but sauntered into my appointment after I'd been waiting for 45 minutes and told me I should have made an appointment with someone in his practice who was less in-demand. For the record, I didn't ask to see him, specifically. There are good doctors in this city that can run on-time. This guy is not one of them.
Every time I've been to see this doctor, I have had to wait at least 30 minutes to be seen. Dr Heller is always in a rush to get the procedure done to move onto his next patient, and therefore doesn't take the time to explain the procedure or what the results mean of the various biopsies he has done. This was particularly upsetting when he rushed through an explanation of the potential cancer risks associated with a specific biopsy result - when I asked questions he still didn't provide a clear answer and so I had to ask the nurse what he meant after he left the room. I would not recommend either this doctor, or the office.
Took me right away. Dr. Bruce Heller was awesome. He knew immediately what my skin condition was and had the answer!!!!!!!!
Sanchez N. I visited Dr. Heller for a consultation for hair loss due to chemical treatment. Dr. Heller is committed to providing me with the best of treatment for my hair, and he is extremely knowledgeable, thorough and caring. I am satisfied and love the result of having my hair back. The staff and medical assistance are incredibly friendly. I absolutely encourage anyone who wants excellent treatment and service to come here. I highly recommend Dr. Heller to anyone who is looking for a dermatologist. He is informative and always take the time to answer all my questions and concerns. I definitely return for my follow-up.
Dr. Heller is second to none. He quickly diagnosed what was causing the rash on my leg and gave me a prescription for a cream to make it go away. Within a day of using the cream, the rash was gone. Dr. Heller is a true professional and always asks if there is anything else that you have concerns about before saying goodbye.Thank you Dr. Heller for taking care of myself and family all these years.
Always in a hurry to rush out and be done with the checkup without listening to his patients patiently, or examining carefully. Does not explain the process/procedure before starting and wants to be head out quickly rather than hear out the patient.Third time that this has happened, and it is extremely frustrating.
Heller's Angels!I was a patient of Doctor Heller for almost 4 years. This equated to probably 25 or so visits. Most of those visits either resulted in a biopsy or a injection and scrape off/out of basil or squamish sites. I was always amazed at how heavily Doctor Heller relied on his nurses. Over that period, two nurses in particular stood out -- Greisy and Jenna. Essentially they did the the skin exams and identified where the next problem spots (typically two each visit) were to be "doctored". So, one of the Angels would circle the new candidates with a pen. Then the doctor would come in numb the spot and do the bi-op or the scrapping. And then he was on to the next patient. Greisy or Jenna would then patch me up and give me some instructions ... but never rush me out until my questions were answered. From time to time I did get demoralized and would decide not to go back, but incredibly I would go back almost entirely because they were so professional. Recently, I did move on to a doctor who is a bit less prone to cut, but I'll always be grateful for Heller's Angels.
Dr. Heller showed genuine concern for my condition, and significant caring and understanding of my questions. He's very knowledgeable and does an excellent job of ensuring me that I am well taken care of.
Had to wait for 50 minutes with a confirmed appointment. When I asked how long it would take for the doctor to see me, receptionist responded that they could not control wait times. That may be true, because there where 20 people waiting when I arrived. If you'd like to go to a Doctor that respects your time, avoid Doctor Heller's practice.
Dr. Heller is the best. He has excellent bedside manner and has made sure all of my questions were answered during each of my appointments. His office has fit me in for same day appointments and has had me in and out the door in 15-20 minutes. He's also taken into consideration my shoddy insurance coverage by helping me with RX samples and finding cost effective generic RXs, waiving copays for follow-up appointments, and giving realistic advice knowing how difficult it can be dealing with bad health insurance.Would absolutely recommend him for anyone looking for a good NYC dermatologist!
Beware, this doctor is highly unethical. I had gone in for a routine cancer screening/check-up and without even doing the standard visual check, as any doctor would, he immediately decided he needed to take two skin biopsies because he was "allowed to take 2 per appointment, as per my insurance". Even though neither area he biopsied was a cause for concern for either him or me, he said that since he it's allowed by insurance, he would just to be sure. I asked him very specifically where this "procedure" would be an additional charge to me, as I wasn't sure what my insurance covered and didn't want to pay this all out of pocket. He and his PA assured me repeatedly that neither the procedure or the lab work would be an additional charge and would be included in my appointment fee.Lo and behold, a month later, I receive a bill from his office where he charged my issuance company $700 ($500 for the biopsies) and they now expect me to pay a large portion of it out of pocket. The woman in charge of billing says that the doctor "doesn't know how insurance works" and that since he did the procedures and I signed a waiver that I would be liable for any charges not reimbursed by insurance, that I need to pay. She also mentioned that I will likely get a bill from the lab as well. This whole ordeal is totally unconscionable. I highly recommend you avoid this doctor at all costs, as he clearly is in it to pad your bill as much as possible and will lie to you in order to do it.Not to mention, he told me I would have to come for a follow up to get my test results (so he could make more money off of me) -- which I, fortunately, cancelled and get my results over the phone.And...yep, you guessed it...he didn't even perform the cancer screening because once he took the two biopsies, the visual screening was pointless (because he couldn't take more).
Dr. Heller and his staff were very knowledgeable and patient. The office was clean and I have very little wait time. I will definitely come back to this office.
Dr. Heller & the whole staff very good & professional.
This guy is a poster-child for insurance fraud. He does as much as he can get paid for ,EVERY VISIT.I went for a skin tag and a checkup. He decided that i had light insurance coverage and would be looked at by an assistance,Dr Baral quit old and bad eye site.Despite not asking me to remove anything but my shirt,he took 2 biopsies , for 3 visits before addressing the skin tags. This sleaze ball operation has one or two young female trainees in the room with you.For my checkup , he never examined me, did not ask for me to remove my pants, etc.I felt a little embarrassed at having 22 year old"chicks" hanging out in the room and getting undressed. THE ONLY THING I WAS ASSURED WAS THAT 2 BIOPSIES WERE TO BE TAKE EACH VISIT.If i WAS STILL GOING THERE I WOULD LOOK LIKE A PIECE OF SWISS CHEESE.Avoid this crook. The fact that they are still in business speaks to the gross incompetence of the insurance and medical establishment. After all neither of those groups are paying the bill, only the consumer.
Very pleased. Dr. was polite and thorough. Staff friendly & helpful.
