List of Gregory J. Pamel's Reviews
Office is poorly managed and overbooked. Dr Pamel is always running late. Today waited an hour and a half and doctor Pamel never showed up-- no call and no courtesy. Skip the wait and go elsewhere.
Dr. Pamel has been my ophthalmologist for many years. I have had problems with severe dry eyes (MGD) and corneal ulcers and he has always been there to get me through it, Recently I tried out two of their procedures for MGD and it seems better. Kelsey Butler and all his staff have been smart, efficient, and kind. I wouldn't go anywhere else.
I was with pamel for years & only after his office mistakenly told me they didn't take my new insurance did I find out just how terrible he is. I have glaucoma & he never mentioned my Xtra thin cornea, allowed my pressure to destroy my optic nerve & the office refused to send my records to the next dr. until I threatened to sue them and then left TWO appt.s out of my records which can only mean how damning they must be. DON'T TRUST HIM.
Great doctor. Highly skilled. Excellent follow-up care. Had two very successful cataract surgeries (9;years apart). I would highly recommend.
I was a long time patient of Pamel's. I have glaucoma. During my many years there I never was told I have a very thin cornea which affects evaluating my eye pressure, I also had many pix taken of my optic nerve and NEVER was told it was diminishing. I saw him every 3-4 months every year AND only because I switched insurance and his office mistakenly told me they didn't take that insurance did I find ...
I was a long time patient of Pamel's. I have glaucoma. During my many years there I never was told I have a very thin cornea which affects evaluating my eye pressure, I also had many pix taken of my optic nerve and NEVER was told it was diminishing. I saw him every 3-4 months every year AND only because I switched insurance and his office mistakenly told me they didn't take that insurance did I find myself at another doctor's office. I immediately found out my optic nerve is now 90% lost forever, about my thin cornea and its impact and new medications were prescribed to manage my now dire situation. Also, I requested my records for the new doctor and ONLY after a year of being lied to & threatening a lawsuit did they finally send them - but leaving out (2) TWO appt.s(with probably damning info. on him). If you're seeing him now - leave & if you're considering him - DO NOT. This review is all that is left me now.
I would say 3.5 stars. I'm happy they could take care of my keratoconus concerns and I would say Dr. Pamel is definitely one of the better doctors in the city for keratoconus, and he is able to give a good treatment plan too. I would say though the bedside manner is a little rough for Dr. Pamel. For Dr. Butler and Burmy they are very caring towards my eyes and often they give different more conservative opinions than Dr. Pamel (which is something I appreciate because you can at least see how different people process different information about your eyes). What lost some stars is that 1) Dr Pamel was running in and out during my procedure and left me there with my eye pried open for way longer than necessary. That sucked. So yeah, the bedside manner is rough, but overall he does a good job from what I've experienced. 2) The freaking insurance and billing department. They owe me thousands of dollars and it's been over months. I don't know what's going on there, but I will be waiting to get my money back to do the next procedure, jesus, even my insurance company is confused. I keep calling and they literally never respond unless I get someone from my insurance on a conference call with them. It's ridiculous.
I left New York years ago and still (mentally) thank Dr. Pamel for the superb treatment and exceptional LASIK results that I enjoy every waking minute of every day. In January 2004, I visited the NYC office for a pre-LASIK evaluation. Staff was well-trained, courteous, thorough, informative, patient, and responded to my many questions. Afterward, Dr. Pamel and I became engaged in a dialogue and compared the various LASIK technologies that were available, at the time. I had consulted several ophthalmologists, but Dr. Pamel was the only one who provided me comprehensive and objective information on several systems, including a number of widely-used lasers, as well as the then newly-FDA-approved Allegretto Wavelight system. The decision to ask Dr. Pamel to perform my LASIK surgery was easy. The procedure was smooth, professional, and as comfortable as it could have been. I left Dr. Pamel's office with my family and the standard-issue sunglasses, and headed home to relax. The next morning, I cautiously opened my eyes and, despite the initial blurriness, I immediately sensed that the LASIK had been a success. Dr. Pamel confirmed this during several post-operative visits where eyes consistently tested at 20/20. I am now well over 50 and my eye sight has begun a predictable path toward reading glasses. LASIK results had been successful and strong for as long as anyone would have hoped or expected. My eye doctor (just today!) indicates that he cannot see the scarring he usually associates with LASIK patients. My eyes are in great health. Although it is time for me to consider reading glasses, I’m on Dr. Pamel's website studying alternatives and the latest advances in presbyopia treatment. If appropriate, I’d make an appointment with your office and fly to New York in a heartbeat, knowing that I’ll not find better eye care anywhere else.
Let me preface this by saying this was my third (and happily last) try at finding someone to do cataract surgery. (My advice to all is to avoid New York Eye and Ear!) So on to Dr. Pamel, a true gem. I left the office smiling. He explains everything clearly and was a pleasure to talk to. He made me almost wish I had a spare set of eyes that he could treat. The staff is extremely pleasant and a special "shout-out" to the surgical coordinator. Ashley Motiram was patient, explained the procedure protocol fully and encouraged questions. This was a terrific experience from one who has walked this road twice before.
I had Lasik surgery with Dr. Pamel and it was a wonderful experience. He was professional, easy to communicate with and detailed. I was nervous for the surgery but he was very comforting and explained everything that would happen. The pre-op was thorough and the surgery itself was easy and fast. I am thrilled with the results and would recommend Dr. Pamel to everyone considering Lasik.

Selection Criteria
All the information you see here is based on our analysis of internet reviews across the seven major review platforms most used by consumers during their healthcare provider selection. The platforms we selected are Google, WebMD, Yelp, HealthGrades, Facebook, RateMDs, and Vitals. The analysis algorithm uses the compiled data of average score, recency of reviews, number of reviews, and the sentiment expressed in the written comments. It then assigns weight to each parameter based on the available research on how consumers use reviews in their doctor selection process. This report is designed to help identify the doctors with the best overall review score in an area and does not reflect the doctors' competence.
