List of Nubia S. Vargas-Chen's Reviews
We moved to Mount Sinai about 2 years ago and transferred both my daughters’ care to Dr. Vargas-Chen. She is a patient, knowledgeable, and thorough doctor. My youngest daughter kept getting misdiagnosed until we transferred our care to her. I will be forever grateful to her for thinking outside the box, being thorough, and looking at our daughter’s health deeply and not just focusing on Covid, flu, etc. We are very appreciative for Dr. Vargas getting to the bottom of my daughter’s frequent upper respiratory infections. We highly recommend her. I never have trouble getting sick appointments for both of my girls.
We had our first doctor visit for our new-born with this doctor. It was during this COVID-19 situation, and the doctor we had selected was not available and Dr. Nubia Vargas-Chen happened to be the one there for our visit. The entire experience was horrible. She wore a seemingly home-made double-plastic-plate-shielded mask in addition to the surgical mask (as if on some aerospace mission), and we can barely hear what she said (with the humming echoes). At the time, both me and my wife wore surgical masks (just per the general advice by the hospital). Dr. Nubia Vargas-Chen obviously wanted to maintain a standard social distance of minimum 6 ft within the no-so-spacious exam room - and whenever I spoke or approached or passed by her (to put the babies on the exam bed), she jumped away like a rabbit - literally, indeed she jumped like a rabbit (no offense), as if we were the CORONA-VIRUS. That was very unprofessional to say the minimum. She rushed to perform some visual checks on the babies, and was extremely impatient answering our questions (actually, we didn't have many as we had done our due diligence of home work), then she bounced herself out of the room like a spring, as if there was a timed-bomb - kind of funny but really rude. This was our first experience with a Pediatrician. It was a horrible and somewhat strange experience. I personally don't think she fits this profession, lacking the professionalism, passion, and care.
Horrible doctor. I would give 0 stars if I could. This is the second time I’ve had a bad experience with her. She really should NOT be working with kids. I’ve met many of the Stony Brook doctors who are amazing and so kind to my daughter. The first time I filed a complaint on this doctor she called me from a PRIVATE PERSONAL number at 11:00 PM, which was very unprofessional. My daughter spends alot of time in the doctors office and hospitals so she is very playful when it comes to doctors. But she repeatedly yelled at my daughter because she was touching her stethoscope, which she does all the time with many doctors with no problem. This caused her to become upset when she already had a high respiratory rate (keep in mind that Dr Vargas DID NOT have the earbuds in). As a person she is very rude, doesn’t listen to what you have to say (She sent my daughter to the ED without consulting her Pulmonologist first causing us to have an unecessary ED visit and gave the EMTs the wrong info because she WOULD NOT listen to what I had to say), and she IS NOT friendly to children, she is definitely working in the wrong field of practice. She also told us we could take our own car to the ED since that is what we usually do and then she came in 10 minutes later with the EMTs (after my husband left bc the Dr had said we can take our own car, if she didn’t say that he would have stayed to drive one of the cars to the ED). There is so much more to this story, but the point is that I will not allow this doctor to place hands on my daughter again. I don’t think anyone should.
Extremely cold, and frankly not professional. She couldn't take a good history because she did not listen to our answers to her questions. She barely looked at our baby. She didn't understand some very basic questions we had carefully written out for her. She provided no education (on a first newborn visit for our first baby) even when we directly asked for it. I was genuinely shocked at how bad this visit was. I will never go back.
We had our first newborn visit with Dr. Vargas-Chen today and my husband and I left the visit truly speechless about how bad it was. First, I should say that all the front desk staff and nurses were lovely. Dr. Vargas-Chen, however, had both bad bedside manner and did not do an effective job as a doctor. My husband, who is in medicine himself, said that he didn't like her at the start of the visit, but a bad personality can be okay. By the end of the visit, however, it was clear she was also a bad doctor. She didn't listen to our answers to her questions, had trouble understanding our very simple questions to her, and spent the whole time behaving as if we were both stupid and neglectful.

Selection Criteria
All the information you see here is based on our analysis of internet reviews across the seven major review platforms most used by consumers during their healthcare provider selection. The platforms we selected are Google, WebMD, Yelp, HealthGrades, Facebook, RateMDs, and Vitals. The analysis algorithm uses the compiled data of average score, recency of reviews, number of reviews, and the sentiment expressed in the written comments. It then assigns weight to each parameter based on the available research on how consumers use reviews in their doctor selection process. This report is designed to help identify the doctors with the best overall review score in an area and does not reflect the doctors' competence.
