Carolyn Shih Md's Online Review Report Card

Dr.Shih is very personable and professional. I had cataract surgery in both eyes thanks to her it was very easy. The patients needs are very important to her. I have recommended her to family and friends. They all were very happy with their visit. I am so happy I started going to her office. Everyone at the Wantagh office is friendly and eager to help.

She is the worst ophthalmologist in the world, my mother almost died because of her wrong treatment! She would do anything to get money! I took my mother to her for a cataract surgery, 1st she said it’s just a simple cataract surgery, nothing to worry, then in the middle of a surgery she got my mom out of the operation room & said, oh you have to take her to a retina specialist, a retina specialist has complete the surgery, I’ll give you a retina specialist number. Don’t worry, she will be fine, take her home now! She said, I am giving her a medication, keep giving it to her until a retina specialist completes the surgery! Now take her home & make appointment with the retina specialist! When we were leaving, 2 nurses came & told me, her surgery isn’t complete, she is in a serious condition, she will be in an extreme pain, don’t leave talk to the dr. Shih, tell her to get it done somehow, they told me not to mention their names! I went back to her, she ignored me, she said don’t worry, go home, make an appointment with him tomorrow & go see him. By the time we came home around 6:30 pm, my mother was already in a serious pain, I called her, she didn’t come to the phone for 30 minutes, by that time my mother was almost in a condition that she would pass out! I called 911for ambulance, I kept calling her, finally she did come to the phone, she said take her to Lij, Northwell hospital, I’ll be there! We got there within 20 minutes, she wasn’t there! Er said there’s no eye specialist available in the er, I kept calling her but no response! Someone came around 10pm & said I m an intern, I m here on her behalf, he Took some fluid out from my mom’s eye than said, she will be fine, keep giving her this Med until she sees a retina specialist, he left! We came home, by next morning my mom fainted, I called 911, went to er, they said your mother might die any moment, her blood pressure went seriously low due to that med, she wasn’t supposed to give her that med, it was a serious reaction & she was supposed to complete the surgery, my mom’s lens fell off back the eye during surgery, she was supposed to fix that before sending us home! Thank God, my mom survived after 2 weeks of serious hospitalization! Please Don’t even think of going to this dr. I am going to take her to the court soon.

Over a 4 year period I have received 4 eye operations from Dr Shih, two cataracts and two corneal transplants with the new method. My vision is almost perfect now and she couldn't be kinder or more caring in her care. The negatives that I have seen here are spurious and hateful. I wonder if anti= asian bigotry could be playing a role here. From Charles Rowden

Dr. Shih performed cataract surgery on both eyes last summer. I consider her an excellent professional...in every respect. She treated me with respect, courtesy, and compassion. Her skills were impeccable.

she saw my cataract problem in both eyes , did both surgeries and i could not be happier with the results and especially her wonderful care, concern and professional attitude. she was always upbeat, explained everything and always flashed a smile despite her heavy workload.she is tops and i would recommend her to anyone!

She is the best Ophthalmic surgeon. She has done two cataract surgeries for me and both have been successful, without any pain or more efforts.I wish her best of luck.

I have been using Dr. Shih for years. She is a wonderful Doctor. A true professional. She explains things clearly. Her diagnostic skills are second to none. She spends a great deal of time with her patients. I would recommend her highly..

Rarely have I ever encountered a doctor as smug and arrogant as this one! She is so lacking in social skills and human decency, it is abysmal. She is one of those 'doctors' who has ZERO regard or respect for her patients and speaks in the most condescending, uncaring manner - and of course, completely dismisses whatever the patient says, deeming herself to be of supreme knowledge and thereby, sees her patients as absolute idiots. Well, in my case - she committed the cardinal sin of grossly Misdiagnosing my condition - and insisting I take medication that only exacerbated it! My questions and objections were totally brushed off with blatant disregard and arrogance. When I asked her what she was basing her diagnosis on, expecting to hear an explanation of my symptoms - she tersely responded thru a forced smile, "my experience". After enduring the agonizing condition for weeks which was severely damaging my vision - and having my requests denied and ignored by her - I finally went to a much more experienced ophthalmologist who quickly negated her diagnosis - and properly diagnosed me with the Exact condition that I had been saying all along!! That's right, me, the lowly 'know-nothing' patient was absolutely Correct - and she/Shih, the big-shot Columbia-trained md who thinks the world of herself was 1000% WRONG! And with just ONE drop of the new medication - which BTW I had been begging her to prescribe for me but she repeatedly refused - my condition improved Immediately and dramatically! And because Shih let my bad condition persist for so long - it made the recovery process a very long and difficult one, from which I am still dealing with long-term consequences. I can NEVER EVER forgive this Brat for what she put me through! It was completely Unnecessary - and a clear situation of a doctor putting her overblown ego and reputation before her patient's well-being. I am writing this to implore patients to NOT be impressed by her credentials - or a staff that is beholden to her as the resident 'expert'. Believe me, she is NOT ! Shih is a Nightmare!! Go to ANYONE else! She obviously does not have the skills to support such a cold, hardened, egotistical attitude. In other words, Shih isn't half as good as she thinks she is!!
