You need to think twice. It was about 6am when I got a phone call the day of my surgery. It stated Dr. Gerhardt most likely needed to reschedule the surgery. I had to continue fasting until about 12:30pm when we finally found out he needed to reschedule my surgery. So a week later my surgery is scheduled for 8am. I show up at 7am to get checked in and ready. I was laying in the hospital bed at about 7:30am beginning my IV. Heather walks in around 7:45am for to sign paperwork for the surgery, but it was not even for the right type of surgery, I had to say no. We then had to weight for Dr. Gerhardt to show up, and wasn't until 9:15am that he arrived. I should not have let him operate on me because he missed in my X-Ray that I still have a bone spur and may labrum is now in even worse condition. I can't work, drive, and find it difficult to even just enjoy life. I thought he would be a professional because of all those autographs he has but really he was anything but professional. I remember waking up from my surgery and the nurse instructing me to change me cloths. I would have but I was still pretty unconscious and she had just given me 2 percocets. As I struggled to put my cloths on the nurse looked right at me and called my a lightweight. All and all I hated my experience with Dr. Gerhardt and I strongly encourage you to reconsider.
Michael Gerhardt is one of the great orthopedic surgeons. Thank your lucky stars if he is yours. Nuff said Phyllis Lavoie
Dr. Michael Gerhardt is a great doctor. Knowledgeable and enthusiastic, he is passionate about his job. He answered all my questions. He explained the MRI results and surgical procedure needed to fix a full thickness tear of the hamstring. I was already impressed by his resume, publications, and surgeries posted online, but I was even more impressed by his genuine desire to help. I was also excited about this new surgical technique, that he is one of the leaders in 21st century orthopedic medicine, and felt confident in his abilities to perform it well. Few weeks later, Dr. Gerhardt repaired my hamstring. Surgery went incredibly smoothly. It feels amazing to be reattached and to have no pain while sitting. What a gift! I am grateful and thrilled to have received such excellent care from a talented surgeon, his kind and attentive assistant Edith, and the compassionate anesthesiologists and nurses at the Surgery Center of the Pacific.
The experience I have had thus far with Dr. Gerhardt has been the best experience with a doctor ever. His staff and he were efficient, friendly and most importantly informative. From initial visit, to X-ray, to MRI to final consultation I was done within one week. You can always look up a doctor's resume. Gerhardt has an impressive one. However, just as important is the way a doctor treats and engages with a patient. Gerhardt and his staff are top notch and I wanted to make sure I could share that with others.
Dr Garhardt's office was on time, his staff was very helpful and Dr Gerhardt himself seems to be very knowledgeable. My problem is with the Dr's bedside manner. Dr Garhardt informed me that my best corse of action would be a hip replacement but for now he would inject me with a cortisone shot for the pain. I agreed to this not realizing he would take this 6 inch needle and jammed it into my hip with absolutely no numbing agent of any kind. This whole thing with such unkindness or lack of compassion left me very upset and I wish I never went to him for help.
Dr. Gerhardt saw my son for a hip problem that had been misdiagnosed by several other doctors and PT's…I wish we had seen him first. He was very kind and sensitive when giving my some some pretty bad news. He spent a lot of time with us and answered all of our questions thoroughly. I found his staff to be highly qualified and professional. He does tend to run late, and they do seem to get backed up in the x-ray dept. However judging from the time and attention he gave us it's probably unavoidable, so plan accordingly….He's worth the wait!!!!
I had a bad experience with Dr. Gerhardt's office. I never got to see him, even though I had an appointment, and the assistant who did see me told me to get an MRI. The MRI place which they contracted, exclusively three days a week with, postponed my first appointment at the last minute. Then, when I went to the second, they made me wait 1.5 (yes, one and one half hours) without doing anything, except putting a gown on me. I left in disgust. Now I pay the skipped appointment fee, the deductible (which is high) and the copay for the initial office visit. And my wasted time. I am complaining to Blue Cross, and failing that, will file a complaint with the CA med board. The prime issue is simple: the need for an MRI should be determined by a doctor, not an assistant. What they are doing, apparently, is bilking Blue Cross (though I suppose nobody cares much about that). It is the patient's responsibility to report this type of issue.
I showed up for my 1:00pm appt and was told that the dr wouldn't be back from lunch until 2:00pm. When I returned at 2:00pm, they put me in a room where I waited until 3:30pm, when a different dr came in. Dr. Gerhardt showed up at 3:45pm! (and didn't apologize, though the other dr and the assistants all did). The actual visit with Dr. Gerhardt was fine; he seemed very knowledgeable and was attentive to my questions, and he explained things when I asked him to. The staff said that Dr Gerhardt was usually more like 20-30 minutes behind.
Extremely good - even great - skills, but terrible interaction with patients. Not at all attuned to patient needs. Abrupt and even rude. Seems to schedule multiple patients for the same time, and does not seem to mind keeping you waiting. Not good at explaining procedures or aftercare. Not at all approachable or empathic. Did a great job on my leg, but doctoring - even orthopedics - is not just about mechanics.

Selection Criteria
All the information you see here is based on our analysis of internet reviews across the seven major review platforms most used by consumers during their healthcare provider selection. The platforms we selected are Google, WebMD, Yelp, HealthGrades, Facebook, RateMDs, and Vitals. The analysis algorithm uses the compiled data of average score, recency of reviews, number of reviews, and the sentiment expressed in the written comments. It then assigns weight to each parameter based on the available research on how consumers use reviews in their doctor selection process. This report is designed to help identify the doctors with the best overall review score in an area and does not reflect the doctors' competence.
