List of Birchaven Village's Reviews
The administration in charge run the facility in a sterile, cold and non-caring fashion. The facility is run like a warehouse. The treatment of my mother, for instance, has been an abomination. A ludicrous, base-less accusation, and unsubstantiated, was made against her. My mother was also threatened multiple times by so-called "professional" administrators. If you love your family member, do not consider this facility nor subject them to the ill treatment of its administrators.
Let me preface this review by saying that I wrote to the administration on June 2, 2023, and have not had a response regarding the review I proposed to write. As it has been over a month without any response, here's what I have to say about living in the "independent" part of Birchaven. The landscaping is immaculate; it is beautiful and serene here. The food in the dining hall is very good, and the prices are decent for a full meal. The residents are very kind and friendly, and maintenance works hard to try to keep up with all of the many projects around the grounds and in the buildings. There are, however, lots of things that make this less than an ideal retirement community. In The Oaks, independent living, there aren't any activities provided by the facility. Residents have taken it upon themselves to organize things to do, but having only a small community room with a few tables and chairs, the majority of activities centers around card-playing. And, residents were chastised for trying to create a calendar of events/ helpful hints brochure about The Oaks and for putting things out on the tables for other residents. It seems that some administrators forget that these seniors are not just adults but customers. There is a small workout room, but not really a good exercise facility. There is a pool, but 1) it isn't open, and 2) when it is open, the public has access to it. So, what is the benefit of being a resident here if I can live somewhere else and come use the pool? The apartments themselves have lots of problems: broken window panes and gaps that allow debris and snow to blow into the residences. There aren't any thresholds under the entry doors to the apartments, so you can hear EVERYTHING in the hallways in your living room. The walls are thin. The washers and dryers are tiny. The AC/ heating units don't always function properly, and the wifi is pretty bad. I suppose if you've never lived in any other retirement community, you might think this place is ok. However, having lived in a place in which there were several living areas (a library, craft room, game room, movie theater, pub, billiards room, card room, full workout facility, indoor pool, woodworking room, BBQ area, garden center, internet cafe, and family dining area) with administrators who knew every, single resident and provided activities that were engaging and exciting, I feel that this place is just substandard. Birchaven may know assisted living and rehab, but they know nothing about creating an active senior living environment conducive to maintaining health. This place almost seems like the transitional housing to prepare you for assisted living, which is not what I wanted for my mother or myself.
Helpful staff, clean and warm
Some of the employees here should learn more about how to treat others. Including their co workers. I’m appalled at how this place runs it’s business.
My mom has been in and out of hospitals and nursing homes for 15 weeks with CHF and COPD. We finally landed at Birch Haven, she has made the most progress with rehab. The place is beautiful, the staff are awesome, and I feel like I can finally relax knowing that she is being properly cared for. At all the other facilities and oneoof them was a LTAC I have had to be on top of every detail, at Birch Haven they are on top of it! Highly highly recommend! ! !!!
My.mom is at independence house fostoria. Trying to go to bircheaven. A bed came up and was refused because she was disruptive she never acted or screamed out before so clearly she is not assessed right it's sad this is so.unfair
Very amazing place to live and rehabilitation when you need it.
1 out of 5 at best
Great place for elder, very beautiful & nice staff. Have taken excellent care of my Mom.
My husband has been here for almost 3 weeks for physical therapy on his leg. In that time, no one has ever washed his hair. One of the times his diaper got changed, the nurse opened his diaper and found out the last nurse before him left dirty wipees in his diaper. On top of that, I found out his groin incision was split wide open and not only looked infected but smelled putrid. I asked the facility if they knew it was like that and they said they knew about it for the last 2 weeks and they never told me anything about it. Also, they were supposed to take my husband to dialysis on Thursday and I was supposed to pick him up after dialysis to see the surgeon about the infected incision. At the last possible second my husband called me and informed me they had left it up to me to bring him to dialysis and never told me. I had to leave my job and drive about 80 mph to get there in time and I lost my housekeeping client who had been paying me $120 a week. Then when I got there, they were all shocked and surprised that I was mad. Furthermore, I had been complaining for a week and a half about him not being able to eat anything without throwing up and they never did anything about it or the fact that he constantly had diarrhea. Today, they finally tested him and surprise, surprise, he has c dif. If I could give them negative stars I would. I hate this place.

Selection Criteria
All the information you see here is based on our analysis of internet reviews across the seven major review platforms most used by consumers during their healthcare provider selection. The platforms we selected are Google, WebMD, Yelp, HealthGrades, Facebook, RateMDs, and Vitals. The analysis algorithm uses the compiled data of average score, recency of reviews, number of reviews, and the sentiment expressed in the written comments. It then assigns weight to each parameter based on the available research on how consumers use reviews in their doctor selection process. This report is designed to help identify the doctors with the best overall review score in an area and does not reflect the doctors' competence.
