Franklin Handel's Online Review Report Card

My father was referred to this cardiologist by his pcp in May 2021, for shortness of breath at rest with minimal exertion and at times when sleeping, sudden and consistent low oxygen readings 75-85% (no previous lung conditions, other than sleep apnea he has surgery for), swelling in legs, chest discomfort, fatigue, and weight gain over a short period of time. He put him through cardiac testing, not once treating his oxygen or shortness of breath (no pulmonary referral, no chest CT or MRI or X-ray follow up, no supplemental oxygen, no diuretic treatment for his leg edema, no adjustment of his BP medication, no new treatment whatsoever), said he ‘was pleased’ with his cardiac tests, and cleared him to follow up in a year, all the while he was still short of breath, fatigued, reading low oxygen on all his medical charts and his home pulse oximeter, swelling up and gaining more ‘weight’. After his testing in September this cardiologist said he would consider a routine pulmonary referral for sleep apnea, and scheduled it 2 months out for November 24th. On November 20th, my son found him dead at home, waiting on the pulmonary referral 4 days away. His autopsy showed his heart was more than 3 times the size of a normal heart (cardiomegaly-coroner said it was the largest heart he had seen), he had fluid filled lungs (pulmonary edema), and fluid that had filled his chest cavity, he had edema in both legs as well. He said this was very likely the cause of his shortness of breath and low oxygen readings for all of those months that went untreated. Save your family member and do not use this cardiologist or the Kettering cardiologist that did my father’s testing-he had asked him for oxygen, a pulmonary referral, and he was told they would consider a referral but he would have to ask pulmonary for oxygen. So he waited for his pulmonary referral as his cardiologist instructed him to, but died waiting.

Dr . Handel is an extremely caring and professional cardiologist. He truly cares about his patients and takes his time. You can’t go wrong having him as your doctor.
