List of Toledo Center For Eating Disorders's Reviews
We had a good experience at TCED. I believe it was a place where my daughter was understood, could relate and be heard. It provided an environment free from the added stressors related to work and to the social and academic pressures of public school, allowing her to do all the hard work on her eating disorder. Period. And that was a lot, that was enough. The connections she made with various staff and peers were not only meaningful, but critical for her recovery to begin. The struggle was real, but she was weight restored and we are beyond grateful that TCED was a pivotal place in our daughter's journey toward recovery. We would like TCED to consider increasing the time or sessions for individual therapy or make that time available in a different format if necessary. We would also like to see more formal or directed education and resources provided for caregivers/families to maximize the likelihood of continuing in recovery and progress, even when the journey has curves and dips in the road.Thank you TCED for getting us on the road.
Magnolia Creek, Selah House Anderson, Selah House Cincinnati, Shoreline and Toledo Center for Eating Disorders are as closely related to each other as all the Renfrews and Emily Houses: Same Company. Same execs. Same Owners: Odyssey Behavioral Healthcare, Brentwood TN. Same now as when I was a pt at TCED Apr 2019, which they bought Feb 2019. Same CEO to whom they refer everyone in all their negative Google reviews who refuses to respond to the last 2+ yrs of my phone calls and emails. If CARF had checked the TCED Direct Care schedules and the patient-witnesses to my complaints we were humiliated having to leave our ward in our pjs to ask teen staff to let us potty or brush teeth, for how often we were locked away from running water in a PHP over 12 hr stretches because they accepted pts that I have email evidence they knew needed residential. This evidence would also have proved how often rules were broken and teens were left alone or adult pts were allowed in the teen unit. I have often considered rallying the parents, for their care was often disrupted when they all had to be drug over to the adult unit so the one staff member on duty could unlock the bathroom or the one shower 6 of us had to share. Maybe they don’t consider my fellow patients witness as valid. If Ohio Attorney General had the legal power to pursue complaints re: mental health clinics false advertising, they had my screenshots of the specific, thorough aftercare Odyssey falsely advertised well into Oct 2019. I have screenshots as well of the lies about individual therapy that tricked me into admission, which felt being recruited, which I didn’t understand until I learned how much they invest in talking pts into admitting, something anyone can discern from their websites.More lies: I saw how TCED got away with their failure to provide myself and fellow pts referrals to any sort of specialized care after discharge when I obtained a copy of my medical records: they falsified the paperwork. It named my referral as an “eating disorder therapist” – completely ignoring the fact that I shared in group in front of patient witnesses and the exec director of TCED that this clinician told me, to my face, that she did not consider herself such a specialist nor had she any specialized eating disorder training or education or experience. Again, maybe they don’t consider my fellow patients witness with any respect. What about family? Would those witnesses be valid?More lies: check TCED’s Google reviews to see where they stole the former clinic’s good reviews as their own: those discuss how great Toledo Center is but will have the acronym RCC later in the review, which stands for River Centre Clinic. The company who owns Odyssey is owned by Nautic, an investment firm, which obviously exists solely to make money, and like many other firms bought up mental health clinics after the parity bill passed which opened the opportunity for them to earn a killing off vulnerable sick people and their insurance. There was a great article about this in the NYTimes called “Centers to Treat Eating Disorders Are Growing, and Raising Concerns.”First, TCED blocked me on their FB page, then, they not only erased MY bad review on it, they removed the entire review section, so they erased everyone else’s bad reviews, too. Thus, I’m posting this on all Odyssey’s ED clinics to fight censorship, and get the truth out, to protect the vulnerable mentally ill who deserve respect and dignity. Even if we all got all our money back I would not edit these reviews for the damage this place caused.
I have the honor of working at Toledo center for eating disorders. Being able to see the hard work happening behind the scenes is amazing. Every single one of that staff that walk into that building care about the well being of each client. Ann and Kenya work hard to ensure each client receives the therapy needed to help recover. Michelle and Alex spend endless hours making sure the meals are well planned out and preparing the clients for the future. Jason ensures the building is well taken care of and in working order. Madi completes all of the intakes and ensures we are being compliant with our accrediting body. Olga and Hollee go out of their way when it comes to keeping the facility clean and helping with clients when needed. Lacey goes above and beyond to ensure all hr needs are met and we have the best employees walking through the door. The RCS and DCS staff are fantastic and work hard to ensure all client needs are met. And most importantly, Kelly and Alicia go out of their way to make sure each problem is tackled head on. I would not work somewhere that didn’t care about their clients. I never hear upper management say anything about the clients money. It’s always about the clients care and how we can best support them.
I have nothing but great things to say about this place. My daughter’s experience was positive from admission to discharge. I was so nervous leaving her 8 hours away from home, but the staff here treated her as their own. I was kept informed on how she was doing and was able to participate in weekly family counseling with her and her counselor and also had sessions with her dietician. She had an allergic reaction to an antibiotic she was placed on and had to go to the ER Twice. Nurse Ashley was with her both times and kept me informed as to what was going on. As a mom, you feel helpless so far away but I knew she was safe and that was the most important thing. They worked with us financially which showed me they really cared about our child and not just money. Our daughter came home stronger and wiser because of her time there and the effort their staff makes for each person. They helped her work hard to overcome her fear foods, restore her weight and most importantly begin living! They oversaw her transition from RTC to PHP and now she is back home participating in IOP sessions. Highly recommend their program! Thank you to all of the staff for helping our daughter and treating her as whole person and not just another number.
If I could give this place a 0 star rating I would! I was originally supposed to be admitted to Selah House in Indiana... Brianne in admissions had my insurance info for over 2 weeks and waited until the night before admission to tell me my insurance was out of network and would have to go to Toledo Center. Brianne also knew about my two young children and assured me many times that the girls would be able to attend visitations with my husband. When I showed up at Toledo to be admitted I found out everything Brianne had told me was a lie. Only 2 visitors at a time and no visitors under 18 years of age. I had also double checked with her that I would get visitation the 1st weekend so my family could book a hotel since we live three hours away and she assured me that I would.... turns out that was a lie too! This place is a dump, their communication is horrible, admission process took over a week to get straightened out, and they lie to get you there. Stay clear of this place and Brianne in admissions!
TLDR: TCED took over the practice and it's terrible now. They only want your money.Toledo Center for Eating Disorders is not the same as the River Centre Clinic. I admitted to RCC 4 times total, twice as adolescent and twice as an adult. I also tried to to get help early this year, but they wouldn't take me because I developed a gluten allergy that they weren't willing to work around.I have a lot of gratitude for certain parts of this program. I learned a lot about boundaries, cognitive distortions, and other interpersonal communication methods that improved my life. However, that has nothing to do with the treatment center, and everything to do with the therapists and staff. Meggan Desmond always treated me with respect and actually listened to me and tried to help me. There were a few other staff members that really made a difference. However, their intake is god awful. This center does not care about saving lives of people with eating disorders, they care about harvesting money from gullible rich people and insurance companies.RCC functioned under a calorie system where you would consume a set amount of calories and fat grams. It wasn't bad, but we ate nothing but pre packaged food and microwave meals. This isn't bad for nutrition, if you're deep in an eating disorder, food is food. However, the incredibly high cost of treatment is extremely questionable considering what is actually provided. If you're paying out of pocket it's easily $500 or more per day (based on last time I was there in 2016) and that is probably modest. How can you justify exploiting patients for this money when you only serve Stouffer's meals and there are no real expenses besides utilities in the building and staff?Things have only gotten worse now because TCED is picky with who they will take. At the beginning of this year I had private insurance through Blue Cross Blue Shield that would be willing to eat most of the cost for treatment. However, they refused to take me because they could not "accommodate a gluten allergy." I have been in program at this location before with people who had far more severe restrictions. There was a lady during my first stay that had gastric bypass surgery and had complications restricting her options. She also had a gluten allergy and intolerance to other food. Don't act like you can't work around it because that is just a blatant lie. Cutting out bread and wheat products is really not hard. You also advertise that you have an on site chef that prepares food now. So if you're not using microwave meals it should be even easier to accommodate my allergy, you just don't want to.My fiancé tried to get treatment last year and was denied because she is on Medicaid. Her insurance was willing to a single case agreement that would cover 100% of the stay. But she was still refused admission by TCED. Why would you refuse someone for a single case agreement when you're only making money off of them? Oh, that's right, because it sets the precedent that TCED would accept Medicaid. And that makes it look like you care about poor people and actually want to save their lives, which you don't.RCC had its fair share of problems too. Everybody knows about Dr. Garner being a predator and not allowed on the property. But at least he was more lenient in admitting people that were dying of eating disorders. You would think that after selling the business and transitioning from private to public ownership, they might actually care about people more. But it's actually the opposite.Looking at the reviews here, most of the good ones come from RCC, not TCED. Please be aware that RCC is very different, and I have seen very little good reviews post 2019. DO NOT go here or send your kids here. This is not the best place to get treatment and there are other places in the region that can do the job better.TCED is only a good option if you are a rich white girl suffering from anorexia. Any other race, gender, economic class, or diagnosis is not welcome here.EDIT: Response mentions nothing about refusing Medicaid & allergies. Disgusting.
This is a terrible treatment facility. Back in 2012 they had you calculate your calories and fat grams. All food was frozen, packaged, and processed. You measured everything out including ketchup. I was there recently for literally two days and not much has changed. Basically all food is still processed and packaged. Most snacks are things like pudding, snack cakes, and other sweets. Barely anything is cooked or homemade. There is no option for supplementing if you don’t complete, which is unheard of. You are supposed to sit at the table for hours until you complete everything. It’s awful. You get ONE hour of therapy a week and do not regularly see a certified dietician. The groups have no substance and there is way too much downtime is such a cramped space. If you have any medical complications, I HIGHLY recommend you do not go here. The only treatment center I recommend and stand by is Alsana.
The staff at the Toledo Center stayed in contact with myself and other members of my client's treatment team throughout the whole process which was so helpful. My client made a significant amount of progress while in treatment at the Toledo Center and found the staff and program to be very helpful.
I was there Apr-Jul 2019 during the actual transition from RCC to TCED, during the time Meggan was put in charge. When I complained to the OH Attny Gen I learned mental health clinics can get away with advertising whatever kind of service they want b/c the OAG can't do anything about it. Compare my daily call from Taylor the week before admission-but after discharge, nothing but a brief call from a stranger a whole month later (the company ownership, Odyssey Behavioral, has admission "specialists" at all their clinics, even a head "admission specialist" over all the others - but none of their ED clinics have discharge specialists.)Neither myself nor majority of fellow patients got referrals to any specialized care. They claimed no knowledge of any local help but themselves. It took me 2 years to find several experienced ED professionals on my own (something TCED should provide) & it turns out they're not only right down the street from this clinic but even used to work there with current staff. I kept up with most of my group & our general consensus is we got more help from each other than the clinic.Six of us adult pts living in 2 cramped offices had to share 1 shower that was in a construction area which was staffed by 730am. At least 1/2 the time we were locked out of the bathrooms & had no access to running water (due to low staff)(the only staff there, 1/2 the time, was with the teens). There's very little advocacy for patients - I saw them fail to direct so many fellow patients to the community resources they needed, that not only did I end up contacting Children's Services on behalf of one of the teens I met, but another teen ended up calling the police on that same one's behalf. The clinic failed to get the ball rolling on mediating this situation while they had a chance & the teen was safe. Not nearly enough individual therapy for this level of care - 1 hour/week?! Ridiculous. Last 6 wks I was there we had no therapy groups on either Weds or Thurs. There were also patients there who needed a higher level of care that fellow patients had to help care for (another issue I've heard from those inside that has continued). And this is my abbreviated list.Worst of all, when I complained about all the above, the director offered no recompense, only got defensive. (These same people who ran "conflict resolution skills" groups didn't know how to apply what they taught!) So I emailed Amos (the CEO), 2 or 3 times, cc'ing TCED's director each time: Zero Response.Since I posted my bad review on their FB page, over 1/2 dozen patients, some from "inside" have contacted me for assistance. They had so many bad reviews there that they removed the entire review section from their FB page. Of course there are good people there who care, but there's nothing they can do about being owned by a portfolio company for an investment firm, whose bottom line is primarily the Almighty Dollar. As I've kept up on their website I see (& patients have verified) continuous staff turnover & one might note only about 1/2 the staff on their website are full-time patient-care providers exclusively at this clinic. The only good I can make from this experience is to hopefully teach others so I'm blogging about it; you can find me in the comments of a channel 13 FB post about their grand opening in 2019. I regret the disruption this caused to my life, the loss of financial & time resources, the new issues it created, & I'd definitely not recommend this clinic or any other which fails to provide thorough & specific discharge services. And I'd never recommend any counselor who refuses counseling for themselves ("Good" therapists have their own therapists.) (Period.)
What are some areas to consider if Toledo Center would be a good fit? You might want good communication from staff. You might want a compassionate team to show they care. You might want a competent treatment team to ensure safety of yourself or your loved one. You might want a creative team to meet you or a loved where you/they are at. No treatment center will be perfect so you might want a treatment center that is fully committed to problem solving to ensure any issues are resolved. All these and more are areas Toledo Center delivered to help my family and did it at a high level.I am very impressed with Toledo Center. Every staff person my family had contact with was helpful and resourceful. Our child shared example after example where the staff helped in specific areas. Most of all, when I went to pick up my child, a sparkle that had been gone for years has returned. A solid foundation has been built with the help of Toledo Center and the future is bright. If you or a family member is considering Toledo Center, I hope this review helps you make a decision to move forward-I highly recommend Toledo Center for Eating Disorders.
