Daniel Kahn, Md's Online Review Report Card

Horrible experience that has traumatized me for the rest of my life. At 20 weeks gestation Kahn misdiagnosed my son prenatally. He told me that my son wouldn’t make it past utero and if he did he would die within 24-48 hours. He strongly suggested termination. He didn’t just inform me of my rights, but he strongly suggested it. He told me that my sons quality of life would be so low and that he could schedule me to come in and terminate. He tried to deter me from seeking second opinions by stating that the only people who could do so are far away. I called him after I got second and third opinions to ask if he still believed in his initial diagnosis, and he told me yes. I had been told by two other people including his colleague Dr. Bernard that my son did not have that first diagnosis. I was presented with a treatment option from Dr. Bernard that I pursued. It would entail traveling to another state. Because of the type of insurance I had at the time Kahn told me it was unlikely they’d treat me there. I called my insurance and they told me that they would cover it. By the time they got everything they needed, it was past my window. The receptionists at MFM, medical assistant Dawn, and the nurse Rachel Perry at USCF all worked together to make sure that I didn’t get in. The nurse Rachel even told me that I should reconsider surgery because my sons condition was too severe she also tried to talk me into getting an abortion. I’m pro-choice, but that decision is mine.Though I understand they have to inform me my rights - that wasn’t the case. I feel it was discrimination because of my insurance, the fact that I’m a woman of color, and single on paper. I feel they thought I was an unfit person to raise a special needs child. My heart still breaks at the fact that I was robbed of a treatment choice that could have been very impactful on my sons outcome. Rewind to my time as a patient at MFM: During my amniocentesis their ultrasound machine shut off for at least a minute and nobody bothered to fix it right away. If you’re unfamiliar with that procedure there is a rather long needle in your sac with your baby. Kahn also tried to deter me from getting it. He kept insisting that it wasn’t necessary and that I wouldn’t get into UCSF. I know a lot of reviews can be driven by emotions which is why I’ve waited over a year to share my story publicly. My intentions are to open other peoples eyes to the fact that doctors don’t know everything. Always seek more! Follow your instincts and don’t settle. Unfortunately our medical system is broken and zero consequences were served for the discrimination, failure to treat, and over all horrible bedside manner and communication that was shown to me. In case you’re wondering my sons outcome - he is amazing! He’s 8 months old now and is kicking his medical journey in the butt. He is nothing like what you told me he would be.He is loved, and love will take him exactly where he needs to go in life. I want to say thank you for this absolutely heart-wrenching nightmare I experienced with you.. Had I listened to you - I would be less knowledgeable of exactly how corrupt and broken our system and society truly is. Thank you for thinking so low of me. My son and I both came out stronger than ever. It’s probably hard for you to imagine someone with my sons disability thriving in life. Cheers to you continuing your practice like you don’t make mistakes, and cheers to me moving forward from this evil place and making it to the other side. I mean it when I say thank you. You’ve shown me exactly what I don’t want my son to turn out like. You’ve taught me many valuable lessons by simply being the awful people (Medford mfm, Kahn, Rachel Perry) that you are. I hope that you are never in a position where you are treated as poorly as you treated me and my son.

I adore him to pieces. He's been informative and super thorough throughout my pregnancy. He's also all about personal choice, but will give his professional opinion/ recommendations. I adore his sense of humor, as well.

Hes absolutely amazing! Never fails to make me feel safe and understood. Always explains conditions thoroughly and has a welcoming sense of humor.
