I was placed at Albertina Kerr two years ago, and it was by far the worst experience I’ve ever had in any facility. The environment was constantly tense.I was always on edge, either because of hostile peers, overwhelmed staff, or the generally chaotic atmosphere.Staff turnover was constant, and I had to switch therapists multiple times, which made it impossible to build trust or get consistent care. They claimed to track personal belongings, but many of mine were lost. The food wasn’t my biggest concern, but it often resembled something from a prison tray.Windows were glued shut, and in the summer, there was no air conditioning!!! it was unbearable. The most disturbing part was the lack of safety. Some peers were openly violent and verbally abusive.I remember someone throwing a radio at another resident’s head !!! and yet the person stayed in the unit.Staff often seemed too exhausted or too undertrained to intervene. Even after I left, I struggled with the aftereffects.I developed an eating disorder and was given no support by the psychiatrist there instead he minimized and invalidated my situation even after hospitalization and then back in their facility. When I checked the website recently, I was shocked. The pictures and descriptions don't match the place I lived in for four months. It feels dishonest. I would never recommend Albertina Kerr to anyone. It didn’t help me :( it hurt me.I left more traumatized than when I arrived. No one should have to feel unsafe, unheard, and uncared for in a place meant to provide healing this place genuinely haunts me and I talk about it with my therapist a true therapist. And I don't say that because she went to school.I say that because I've made so much progress and through that program I feel humane. Please know that there are facilities and places that are willing to support. You should never have to settle for this. 💕
I'm using someone else's account for starters. Okay, this place deserves to be looked into by Oregon Department of Human Services. This place is inhumane, inhospitable and disgusting. I was there in April for two weeks and this place has left me beyond traumatized to the degree where I live out of spite and have made it a future goal to shut down institutions like this. My HIPPA rights were violated after a worker took their partner to work and leaked our names. Strangers spoke to us from outside the fenced area. Staff consistently spoke about politics and gave us their views, but if we gave ours, we were shut down. Talk about sex between patients was not regulated and even encouraged despite this place supposed to being a therapeutic environment focusing on ourselves. My grandma was locked inside of a waiting room for over an hour and a half, they forgot to give her a Walkie-Talkie, and no one was in the hallway, even though they were meant too. This place was understaffed. Christianity or any religion was silenced, or you were shamed for following a religious practice. Food was just carbs and mainly inedible. You only had two options, a bean/cheese burrito or a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, this quickly led to burnout, promoting unhealthy eating habits. After staff search your room, they usually trashed your bedding and organized items (eg. books, artwork, papers) on the floor. My room was searched three times in one day because staff didn't tell the others. I was accused of having "contraband," and didn't even have contraband! The staff worker even announced it to the entire room. The waiting area and halls where parents visit are clean and mostly new, but the actual living space for patients are dark, heating and cooling are not regulated, walls torn. Even the flooring in the bathroom area was literally missing! Constant hornet problems, we had to evacuate from my section, NW, because hornets got in the room. Buzzing sounds in the walls. I was bullied and harassed by other patients in my living space, and staff picked sides. You could only have tea during certain times of day, and phone time to parents was STRICT, and rare. TV usage was also odd, and very strict on when to use, for instance, you could not watch television in the evening, only movies. Two patients I knew were assaulted, one having to go to the hospital - the bullying didn't stop for one of them; their names were carved into playground equipment telling them to kill themselves. The unit was never punished for being disrespectful. The safe room if you want to be away from the unit is literally a dark room, tile on the floor, and a bean bag chair. They call it the "turtle room" but there is literally no turtle decals or turtle stuffed animals. This place also struggled to communicate with my outpatient therapy team, to the point where I thought I was no longer in the outpatient program. Staying on top of visits was also atrocious, via one of my virtual visits with my father was missed due to negligence in paying attention. You hardly do any therapy or work here, mostly just sitting around and talking. I went to CAPU and Unity before and never had to do a strip search until here. Utterly disgusting when this place is meant to be a "step down" and yet more strict than LITERAL mental hospitals. Very odd conversations about gender-affirming surgeries were discussed in front of minors, and I personally felt harassed and groomed by a staff worker. They talked to me about their body, sexual preferences and BDSM. My artwork was also commonly displaced and thrown away. To summarize, this place was a nightmare. Parents, I promise you, there are better options in the Portland area. Staff don't hold themselves accountable. They even lied to my parents. Your child deserves mental health treatment, not trauma.
Felt even worse than before upon leaving after a month of having to stay there. The "food" is beyond awful, the medicine they gave me made it very hard to sleep (I got 2-4 hours of sleep a night) both rooms I stayed in smelled oddly like urine and the therapists and stuff made assumptions on what problems I had and stuck to the "solutions" for issues I wasn't even having. The psychiatrist diagnosed me with ocd for wanting my drawing to just look nice with no logical reasons for his diagnosis. Staff are just generally annoying and every second I spent in that place was miserable and a waste of time 🐴
i stayed there during almost all of march this year, food was god awful and they barely have any selection unless your fortunate enough for your parents to bring you your own food. some of the staff were really friendly but also some were horrible. it didnt feel like they really cared about if we were actually getting better but just trying to make us “better” enough to go home, they barely even made a safety plan for me that wasnt even really in place and i ended up attempting suicide again like two months later. treatment just wasnt effective, the skills they teach are really unorganized and just taught by whichever staff is working rather than someone who trains in those skills and treatments. the therapists only seeing you once a week. overall if you or your kids need to go somewhere for their mental health, this place probably wont do much, but i know this is like the first place kaiser will send you.
All these types of places are a hit or miss. Half of the staff here didn’t really care for you but then there’s an equal amount to make up for that, I would say most treatment centers systems and treatment process are generally not good. But what can you do they’re doing their job with limited resources. Albertina Kerr was unique to other places I’ve been. I went to Kerr twice years apart from each other. It’s an uncomfortable place, the main room feels like a hospital room equal to jail. Each child is going to interpret their stay here differently, for some they’ll feel indifferent or it might be the worst thing that ever happened to them. It mainly depends on what type of staff they have, the other children in your unit, and what’s going on in your own life. This place could help you or leave you in a worse spot in your life, and if your child is here cut them some slack, be kind. It’s a rough situation for everyone, but I guarantee that kid is going through the most of it. A lot of the staff are not equipped for big emotions and complex situations. A lot of them just expect depression and anxiety, but that’s not just what these places are about. Your kid could be put in harsh situations with other clients as well, and see some pretty rough things. I can’t even cover all the things I saw and was involved in. Being here will most likely leave you with an empty lost feeling, it’s hard to describe. But overall I don’t know where I would be without this stay, and it still holds a special place in my heart. It helped and didn’t help that’s all I can say.
My child was just here for four weeks and I cannot say enough wonderful things about the staff. The nursing staff and techs were absolutely amazing. Wonderful experience!!!!!
Johnathan if you’re out there dude I miss you it’s me Michael.
Have been to this place. #supersilly there was a few problems with some of the people in my unit but besides that it’s great place to be
