List of Eric Hansen Md's Reviews
I had a hip replacement in 2018. anterior surgery. From the first day post op i had so much pain moving my leg laterally. This Only got worse and with inability to move or sleep. Dr Hansen indicated after surgery that my hips were the same length, later he told me he was sure he told me it was 5mm to long. actually it was 10 mm. When I questioned who did the surgery ie fellow or resident ? He said he usually places the implant. Well I had to have a revision Because of leg length Since it was over 2 years with a leg that was too long it is questionable it will ever be right. I can not go up stairs or walk any distance. Would have been helpful if sometime in the 2 years of unresolved Issues a review of what was done Might have brought the leg length issue up sooner than 2 years.
Dr. Hansen not only saved my husband's mobility, he likely saved his life. Husband was diagnosed with prosthetic joint infection after hip revision surgery with another provider who did not feel confident to proceed. Husband was also about to begin treatment for leukemia so the odds weren't great. Dr. Hansen performed a two stage revision after clearing infection. His confidence coupled with compassion was OVER THE TOP incredible. Forever grateful for this man to take his case. Writing this 3+ years later as we are now needing a "Dr. Hansen for knees". Wish I could wiggle nose and make that happen. I recommend him and his team without hesitation. PJI's are serious stuff and again, Hansen's ability to take on the challenge AND bring human kindness to the table are unsurpassed.
2.5 years ago I had an anterior hip replacement at UCSF with Dr. Erik Hansen. Immediately following surgery I had intense pain trying to move my leg in any direction. I previously had a Right hip replacement that was so successful and very limited discomfort. I complained about the pain to his PA for months until I demanded an MRI which showed a large effusion of the joint and the muscles of the leg. At the time I was told my leg was 5mm longer than the right. I had injections into the bursa, nerves to be able to walk. It was two and half years of constant pain. I met an ortho surgeon on vacation who suggested that the leg was probably fixable but would require surgery. This based on watching me walk. Turn out my leg was not 5mm long but over 10 mm long and required revision to reduce the size. The muscles in my leg were stretched beyond their tolerance and that was causing the constant pain. If only the thought had been to go and review the leg length. I had a revision surgery by Dr. Mast and 9 weeks post op I am waiting to see if the muscles will remodel and the pain with no longer be an issue. Medicine is very slow to review what has been done and as a result I lived with 2.5 years of pain, every day and had my life severely restricted.
I can't find my post, that I wrote almost three years ago. So I'm writing now to say how deeply grateful I am to Dr. Hansen and his whole team for an incredible work they are doing. For a while I had been hesitant about hip replacement, but the minute the surgery was over, and I was able to walk with a walker a few hours after it (the walker was needed for a short while), Dr Hansen has been included into my morning prayers :) He is a top notch professional, he is a caring man who treats his patients with respect , and fills them with confidence in the successful outcome of the surgery and the treatment. Can't thank you enough, Dr Hansen! I highly, highly recommend Dr Hansen. And separate, special thanks to Rachel Wynne, who is part of Dr Hansen team. She is so professional in what she does, and she is so charming, and caring, and attentive. Thank you Rachel!
I had 3 previous knee replacement surgeries that were botched. Im severely allergic to all metals and was in absolute agony. Dr. Hansen completely fixed both knees. I am only 4 months post op and I never thought I could be pain free until now. Im a little sore, but no pain. Would go back to him and highly recommend him. Thank you for giving me my life back.
It's been two years since Dr. Hansen replaced my right hip. I believe he is skilled and competent, yet two weeks after anterior hip surgery I started experiencing extreme soreness in my knee. I had two follow up appts. with Dr. Hansen in which Dr. Hansen had no idea why my knee was hurting. And, I'm not so sure he cared as he confirmed the hip was fine. Personally, I think my leg was over rotated in surgery and that event triggered a disruption in my knee structure. It's like taking your car to a repair shop to fix your engine. The engine may run perfect yet you discover a knocking in your transmission as a result of the engine being removed. No one really wants to take responsibility. Two years of pain, and I have had to find other orthopedic practitioners that can help solve my knee issues that occurred as a result of my hip surgery.
Rushed through the appointment, appeared completely unfamiliar with my case, and was quick in and out. I hardly was able to ask questions he contradicted himself on top of that, very disappointed, especially given the physician he sent me to kept saying, oh we don't do that, the orthopedic does....
Dr. Hansen is an excellent hip replacement surgeon and the staff at UCSF are all first rate. He takes his time to explain the surgical procedure and the various hip replacement materials (metal, ceramic, etc.). He's probably the one of the most popular orthopedists in San Francisco and therein lies the problem. Scheduling post surgery follow-ups with him is extremely difficult as his scheduling assistant is virtually impossible to get a hold of. She rarely answers her phone or returns calls unless you are scheduling an initial consultation. So the review in a nutshell is great experience pre and peri (during) surgery. Post surgery not so much.
I live 120 miles away from UCSF but having Dr. Hansen is well worth the drive. He is not only a brilliant surgeon but he is a compassionate and caring physician who cares for his patients. He takes the time to answer your concerns and takes in all your medical history to ensure a wonderful outcome.
On all counts, Dr. Erik Hansen is top-notch: skilled surgeon, sensitive, warm human being..and seemingly always available, even replying to an email I sent him on a Sunday evening of a holiday weekend. The new hip he gave me in June, 2016 performs perfectly.

Selection Criteria
All the information you see here is based on our analysis of internet reviews across the seven major review platforms most used by consumers during their healthcare provider selection. The platforms we selected are Google, WebMD, Yelp, HealthGrades, Facebook, RateMDs, and Vitals. The analysis algorithm uses the compiled data of average score, recency of reviews, number of reviews, and the sentiment expressed in the written comments. It then assigns weight to each parameter based on the available research on how consumers use reviews in their doctor selection process. This report is designed to help identify the doctors with the best overall review score in an area and does not reflect the doctors' competence.
