List of Hawthorne Gardens Senior Living Community's Reviews
Serving our Seniors and their families is truly an honor. I am so grateful for the opportunity to be part of this amazing community and team.
I do not recommend Hawthorne Gardens for your loved ones. The Executive Director is condescending to both staff and families. There is a staffing problem in Oregon and this place is not well staffed. Sometimes there are just two staff members for 27 residents on the memory care floor. Despite the acknowledgement from management that there is a staffing problem, they continue to move in new residents. The residents' rooms smell of days old urine. Staff is not supported by management. Despite efforts to support management, they continue to degrade the staff which leads to a high turnover rate and an unhappy staff. There are often no activities because the activities director is pulled away to do caregiving. Residents sit around and watch TV all day with nothing to do. The staff are good people but they are overworked and often have to pull double shifts.
Hawthorne Gardens needs intervention, reorganization to meet acceptable standards. Do not place your loved-one in this facility. Ours was a bad experience, resulting in us moving our parent to a new memory care place which exceeds reasonable expectations.By the way the 5-star ratings were submitted by two employees of Hawthorne Gardens whose names we recognize.
The staff is wonderful, attentive, and best of all LISTENS! The assisted living rooms are great, the yard is peaceful, and it’s located in a very quiet neighborhood.
The staff cares and are good team mates when we work together for my moms happiness.
Hawthorne gardens is about the worse place I have ever worked. The management is disrespectful to there employee, maybe that's way they are always losing good employee. They are always short staffed in there memory care and some of the residents eat breakfast due to them being short staffed.
Moving my uncle into Hawthorne Gardens Assisted Living is a regret I will live with for the rest of my life. He moved in July 2020 and died there in April of 2021. Care plans are not done in a timely manner. In fact, I finally got a CP done after he was a resident there for 4 months, there was no record of it anywhere when the "new" manager came on board and we needed to asses his new care needs due to declining health. Hawthorne Gardens management (Senior Lifestyles) has been putting new people in the ED position since December 2020. Now all they can manage are interim ED's from corporate. Staffing of caregivers is inconsistent in number of providers as well as HG staff often being supplemented by agency caregivers. This is extremely frustrating for the people who live at HG. My uncle had to argue with and educate CG's weekly on how to care for and apply his diabetic leg wraps. Many days they did not even put the wraps on, and many times they didn't take them off in the evening. All of this care was part of his doctor directed care plan. The food is poorly prepared and often unhealthy. My uncle was served spoiled milk. The recent state review showed black mold growing in the kitchen along with numerous other problems. The cook has left. Not sure how things are currently. The call button system fails regularly, at least three times during the 9 months my uncle lived there. Once they didn't work for over a month and family members were not alerted. You assume your loved one can call for help. My uncle was on hospice, not able to walk or stand independently. He relied on caregivers to use his commode. 5 days before he died he called me at 7:30 in the morning because he needed to have a BM and no one was coming to assist him after he pushed the call button. I called the main phone number 5 times between 7:30 and 8:00am trying to reach a live person. When someone finally answered, she said, "Oh, I think all the caregivers are on the first floor." Caregivers were sent to his room to assist. They told him later that day that his call button was broken. Let that sink in. A resident on hospice, not able to stand independently, using a broken call button waiting for assistance. So desperate for help he had to call a family member to try to get support for him from outside the building. No live person answering the phone at 7:30 on a weekday morning. The most frustrating part of having a loved one here is that there is no direct access to ANYONE who can actually make change. The corporate staff who show up to "fix" things do their best to squash family members trying to advocate for their loved ones. They gaslight you saying, we're hiring so many new staff....and yet there are never enough staff and they are still hiring away. Hawthorne Gardens has a Family Council which is working to identify common areas of concern and bring them to the management. Everyone is welcome to join this group. It was amazing to learn that I wasn't the only person frustrated by the care and communication provided here. And, nice to know that my uncle wasn't "just" a complainer. His complaints were valid. In summation, do your research. Find out what happens when you call the facilities management company. Is it local? Do you get a live person? State reviews at Hawthorne Gardens are terrible. Honestly, all facilities are struggling. Request a copy of the state report before you put your loved one in any AL or MC facility. Better yet, call your local ombudsman and find out if there are complaints. There are so many complaints at HG that they have their own dedicated ombudsman. Do your research. I wish I had. Placement agencies don't necessarily have full information to share so take their recommendations as a suggestion, not a guarantee!

Hawthorne Gardens is a nightmare, especially on the Memory Care Floor. Turnover rate from Executive Directors to the caregivers is appalling. Don’t let the exterior fool you, the rooms are filthy. Communication is poor. After a year of being locked out, it is sickening to see how our loved ones have been living. (There are a few kind souls working there, and they are overwhelmed.)
Excellent Luau brunch and entertainment today! A beautiful care facility.

Selection Criteria
All the information you see here is based on our analysis of internet reviews across the seven major review platforms most used by consumers during their healthcare provider selection. The platforms we selected are Google, WebMD, Yelp, HealthGrades, Facebook, RateMDs, and Vitals. The analysis algorithm uses the compiled data of average score, recency of reviews, number of reviews, and the sentiment expressed in the written comments. It then assigns weight to each parameter based on the available research on how consumers use reviews in their doctor selection process. This report is designed to help identify the doctors with the best overall review score in an area and does not reflect the doctors' competence.
