List of Derek Duke Thomas's Reviews
I went to Dr. Thomas for back pain that was traveling down to my leg. I went for an MRI and returned a week later to review the results. No images were ever shown to me nor was the report. He said I would need surgery. He wanted to perform a surgery on me without even examining me. No physical exam was EVER performed. I got a second opinion and the doctor who saw me was appalled that Dr. Thomas was going to perform a surgery on me. I do not recommend. The second opinion doctor did a thorough exam on me.
He gave me my life back! Went into the ER not able to walk & in severe pain from a ruptured disc. He fit me into surgery the very next day. He's super friendly and made me feel so comfortable. I would go back to him for any future issues. (His assistant is awesome too!)
Fantastic doctor! Helped my pinch nerves. So far surgery was a success. His brother Dr. Steven also works with him. Very nice doctor as well. Also has an amazing physician assistant named Marissa. She's so kind and gorgeous. Always calls me sweethart when she see's me. I wish I was young enough to date her.
Two years ago had a spinal fusion with screws and rods. Three weeks after surgery I still had pain and no relief . I was told it would take time and to try pain management. Two weeks ago, I had a CT and MRI, which showed the surgery was a failure and I had some loose screws. Dr. Thomas did not seem concerned. I would not recommend him. Terrible patient bedside manner.
He skillfully fixed my broken neck. He is extremely knowledgeable and kind.
Dr Thomas performed my first back surgery at Sewickley Hospital. Most of that experience was a nightmare...beginning entering the hospital that morning and no elevator to get up to the second floor. I was directed to walk up the stairs. I was carrying my stay over bag and could hardly walk anyway let alone a huge flight of stairs. The anesthesia made me extraordinarily sick, which prompted staying an extra day instead of just overnight. Since when is major back surgery ambulatory surgery? Dr. Thomas put in screws, rods, and a spacer. Immediately after surgery I felt some relief but by the time of my two week check up I was starting to have severe pain in my back and down my right leg. One of the screws moved and the spacer let loose. At the two week appointment I saw the PA and not Dr. Thomas, who was there at the time. I believe the x-rays from that day showed that the surgery didn’t work and I was led to believe that the surgery did work and that it would just take more time. Meanwhile I was in Increasing excruciating pain. I returned a week or so later and Dr. Thomas told me I would need a much more complicated surgery that he could not perform. I saw another doctor who did the surgery… Taking out everything Dr. Thomas did and started over. The disk was difficult to find and my nerves were frayed and in terrible condition...causing all of my pain. I would not recommend surgery by Dr. Thomas.
Dr. Thomas performed disc repair surgery thru my abdomen. Immediately the years of sciatic pain was gone. Couldn't be more excited about the results. He explained in detail and with drawings how he was going to do the surgery. Very caring, obviously knows his stuff, can't say enough good things about this awesome surgeon.
I can't say enough good things about Dr. Duke Thomas and his staff, I've had neck surgery and 2 back surgerys all done by Dr Duke Thomas. I live in Erie PA and I drive all the way to Pittsburgh because that's how good he is. The staff is always very pleasant and they take their time.
This doctor is awesome!!!

All the information you see here is based on our analysis of internet reviews across the seven major review platforms most used by consumers during their healthcare provider selection. The platforms we selected are Google, WebMD, Yelp, HealthGrades, Facebook, RateMDs, and Vitals. The analysis algorithm uses the compiled data of average score, recency of reviews, number of reviews, and the sentiment expressed in the written comments. It then assigns weight to each parameter based on the available research on how consumers use reviews in their doctor selection process. This report is designed to help identify the doctors with the best overall review score in an area and does not reflect the doctors' competence.
