UPMC SHADYSIDE HOSPITAL FLUNKS PATIENT CARE My doc TOLD me I had to get tested for a clot. My Discharge Papers tell me what I was experiencing HAD to be seen in the ER (since it was Friday and Saturday night). WHY did the staff treat me with such disdain? I was there for pain. I NEVER asked for pain meds. They never offered any. I asked for a blanket, after TWO HOURS of "chillin'" on a gurney--IN THE HALL. Except for a heated (MORE than I'd asked for) blanket, which only came after the SECOND request, I asked for, and got, NOTHING but a two-minute blood draw --in about five-and-a-half hours. They 'think it might be' a cyst, but took NO soft-tissue scans. F-

Staff is incredibly kind, helpful, and skilled. Every time I'm there I'm amazed not only at the quality of care, but the helpfulness of everyone in the building. A doctor went out of his way to walk me to the office I was looking for, and we picked up another directionally challenged visitor searching for their floor on the way.

Arrived at ER at 1:50AM with a BP of 240/160. I had a kidney stone. Seemingly the BP, nor the pain was enough to be even checked after initial registration. I was eventually checked in at 6AM and seen at 7AM. I passed my stone in the waiting room. I had to walk to my car to get water as there was none anywhere near the ER nor was there anyone to check on patients. This is a deplorable state for anyone going to the ER late at night as others waited long periods as well. I was told it was a staffing issue but not something you want to hear when going to the hospital. Imagine going to the police station with someone pointing a gun at you and being told to wait in the waiting room.

5 stars is not even enough!! The medical team that treated me the day of my surgery were amazing!!! Dr. Daniel Wecht, Gina Shaffer, Denise Hoffman, Brent Cain, my nurse in preoperative prep, I can't recall his name but he was so great! He did tell me his name but I feel so bad I can't recall it. Brittany, my nurse who spent a nice chunk of time with me in recovery, she was fantastic!! Amazing person and a great nurse!!! My medical team on Ward 7!! Emily, you were terrific!! Thank you for being so awesome!!! The rest of the crew that cared for me, I wish I remembered all of your names. I can picture all of you, just a lot of names to recall. Thank you to all of you!!! Your work is tough at times and you may have had a very busy day the day of my surgery, but I would have never known it. Every one of you deserve so much praise for the amazing work you do day in and day out. From the bottom of my heart, thank you!!

This review is for dietary services only. I was given a vegetarian meal with a Rice Krispie treat. Rice Krispie brands contain gelatin, which is made from cows or pigs. I’ve been inpatient at other UPMC hospitals and they could not tell me the ingredients in their food. Seems to be a systemic problem. This is highly discouraging for vegetarians and disrespectful to religious minorities that abstain from eating animal product.
