Dr. Filak saved my life. After having a 10/10 painful migraine for almost a month and several doctors ignoring my pain, I went to VisionWorks where Dr. Filak was working that day. He immediately saw my eyes were hemorrhaging from the pressure in my head and referred me to the ER. I was finally taken seriously and was able to get a lumbar puncture for immediate relief, then found out my VP shunt was not working and got it replaced. I am 4 months post-op and haven't had a single migraine since. I truly believe Dr. Filak saved my vision and my quality of life. I can never thank you enough.

He has been my eye doctor for years. He was the first to figure y my eyes, "astygmatism", which is bad. Great bedside manner. Highly recommend him

The front desk staff were very friendly. Dr. Filak was very thorough and explained everything that he was doing and the findings. I appreciated the time he took to explain things so that I would understand.

My husband and I have been patients of Dr. Filak's since he was just starting to practice at the Wal*Mart vision center. We followed him when he started his private practice in Shrewsbury. The reviews are accurate in that he does a number of tests with state of the art equipment not offered at other optometrists. If you speak with him and his staff, you should be able to waive those tests that you choose not to take or cannot afford, and just get the exam and typical tests that would be offered at a routine or "chain" optometrist. And the reviewer is correct he is not a medical doctor, but an optometrist. On two separate occasions in the last 10 years he has met my husband and I at his office to remove a tiny metal fragment from my husband's eye. Once at 11 pm on a Saturday evening, and another time on a beautiful Sunday afternoon. He provided quality care, billed our health insurance who covered the visit, and save us the wait in an emergency room with a huge bill. He is quite knowledgeable about diseases of the eye and does refer patients when the care of an ophthalmologist (medical eye doctor) is needed. He is monitoring us both for glaucoma, and me for ptosis. His fees by no means are discounted or a bargain as one may find at one of the chain optometry centers, but we trust him with our care. The office setting is pleasant and his staff especially Amanda are exceptionally friendly and helpful. The frames and lenses are pricey, but we see more clearly and the lenses hold up much longer than the ones we used to get at Wal*mart. It comes down to a personal choice as to whether you want the upgraded services and care.

I wish I had read the review on this doctor we went. We had the exact same problem. We didn't ask how much all of the tests were that they kept doing. We did ask why we needed them when we never had to have them before. Only answer was because they now test for these things as part of your visit. However the exam and tests were over $400 and that was with no glasses, frames, lenses or contacts. In researching this I found he is not even a medical doctor - just an optometrist and we could get an exam for much less elsewhere. We feel very taken advantage of. We trusted him We have learned our lessons. Ask for prices before you let him do anything or you will end up with a large bill and still have to go elsewhere for glasses or contacts.

As a money conscience family who pays our bills and isn't late, I would suggest that before you go to him you ask a "good guesstimate" of what your total balance will be before treatment is rendered. My husband who went to him for years w/insurance recently saw him w/o insurance and the total bill was $450 & he has NO glasses or contacts to show for that money. Ughh! I saw another doctor and had the same tests for 1/2 the price. I'm sure he is very competent but I questions his high fees.
