Edmond Chan's Online Review Report Card

Dr Chan operated on my wife in July. We couldn't be happier with the choice of surgeon. He is a true professional who takes pride in his work. He is friendly, professional and a gentleman. His work was beyond what we expected and the stitching has left very little scaring. His staff are also professional, friendly and caring. Thank you Dr Chan & team for making what could have been far more traumatic easy.

Here's the problem with allergist Dr Edmond Chan. His allergy clinic is literally next door to a fully equipped & fully staff emergency room dept. This may initially seem like a good thing but it's not. Since he can access a full size intensive care unit team at the drop of a hat, this emboldens Dr. Chan to take on alot of unnecessary risks that other allergists would never accept. He routinely offers oral food challenges to food allergic kids, not knowing how the oral food challenge with end up. Some of his paediatric patients end up in the ICU with epinephrine drips for several days, severe violent vomiting, drastic drops in blood pressure potentially causing cardiac arrest, headaches, dizziness, painful stomach aches, inability to breathe from throat swelling due to allergen exposure. All of this is considered an acceptable reaction to oral food challenges since the BC Children's Hospital emergency dept & ICU Dept can "simply treat the anaphylaxis." Dr. Chan is playing with fire. While there are some kids who pass their food challenges without reactions, there is a potential for things to go horribly wrong at his allergy clinic since Dr. Chan seems to have a very high tolerance for risk.

I have to wonder if the glowing reviews below are for the same doctor who I found to be absolutely useless. He was rude, condescending, and lacked empathy. I waited over a year for this? The only positive aspect of the encounter was his resident (she was lovely). I will be looking for a new allergist.

About 7-8 years ago, I discovered my child has severe food allergies while also suffering from severe eczema. I was visiting different health care providers trying to find help for my child. I went to Dr. Edmond Chan for help at the B.C. Children's Hospital allergy dept. I told him I had also visited Dr. Gerry Ryder who was a medical doctor who decided to leave hectic stressful emergency medicine to cross over into practicing Integrative Medicine instead. Dr. Edmond Chan became infuriated that I would "do something so stupid" as to visit an Integrative Medicine practitioner. Dr. Chan then gleefully informed me that he was helping the College of Physician and Surgeons spearhead an investigation into the "wrongdoing" of Dr. Ryder because Dr. Chan thought there was no validity to Dr. Ryder's work. Long story short, Dr. Chan caused so much trouble for Dr. Ryder that Dr. Ryder ended up retiring his medical doctor status and withdrew from the College of Physicians and Surgeons. It seems Dr. Chan takes alot of unnecessary risks and reckless chances on his patients.

Ten years ago, I told Dr. Edmond Chan that I was also seeking the help of a naturopath for my child’s food allergies. His first question was, “How much does the naturopath charge you?” and then he got upset the naturopath was making more money than he thought was right. He then wrote a letter to my family doctor threatening to cut me off from his allergy clinic if I continued to have the seek “unproven & unscientific” allergy treatment offered by the naturopath. The treatment offered by the naturopath was called, “sublingual immunotherapy” which involves regularly administering very diluted liquid concentration of allergens in the mouth with the expectation that it would build up my child’s tolerance to the food allergens. The goal is to gradually desensitize the child to the allergens. Fast-forward ten years, I discover Dr. Chan is now offering sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT) at his allergy clinic at B.C. Children’s Hospital even though he harshly criticized this exact same therapy when I told him about it 10 years ago. He is also promoting it as his breakthrough allergy desensitization treatment for older kids who often don’t quality for OIT. What?!! Naturopaths has been offering this for decades before Dr. Chan finally realized there is merit to SLIT. As the head of the paediatric allergy clinic at BC Children’s Hospital, Dr. Edmond Chan has a reputation of being on the frontier of allergy treatment but he seems a bit delayed to me.

Dr Chan almost killed my child during an oral food challenge. I consented to the food challenge because he told me he thought my kid would easily pass the food challenge based on his medical knowledge & his years of clinical experience. He was dead wrong. My child ended up in the emergency room requiring a ton of epinephrine & other help as well. I discovered that this is not an unusual occurrence for kids who undergo a food challenge at his allergy clinic. Dr. Chan considers it to be acceptable to almost kill your child during his "allergy treatment" for his patients. Talked to other parents of food allergy kids who tell me the same thing. Their kids have also been traumatized by Dr. Chan's recklessly feeding almost lethal amounts of allergens to their kids in an attempt to "treat" their kids for food allergies. One kid was so terrified when her throat started closing up & she couldn't breathe. The staff at Dr. Chan's office acted like it was just another day at the allergy clinic.

Dr. Chan is a fantastic allergist. One of the best, extremely knowledgeable and up-to-date with current research. Yes, sometimes he can come across a bit arrogant, but many, many experts in their fields do as well. He is very dedicated to helping children and parents with diagnosing and management of their allergies. I recommend him all the time and two of my four children have been seeing him for many, many years. Highly recommend him if you can wait the nearly 12 months for a first-time visit. I also like that he doesn't believe in bombarding your child with 40-50 skin pricks at one time only to find false positives. He and his staff are wonderful and never rush us through an appointment.

I didn't have a good experience with him. Got cut off every time time I asked him why my naturopath's tests were inaccurate. Just got told to listen to him. A bit condescending.

No complaints at all about Dr. Chan himself but the woman with the British accent who answers the phone is brusk in tone and not very helpful or understanding. Perhaps this person has changed, as this was a few years ago.
