Online Reviews Breakdown
List of Scott Sylvia's Reviews
I scheduled an appointment for an eye exam online. I need a referral from my primary care physician, in order to have my insurance pay for the exam. I arranged all that ahead of time. The day of the appointment, while at work (a few hours before my appointment time), I received an email that said "We have an opening an hour earlier if you'd like to take it, but if not, that's okay, we'll see you at your scheduled time." I had an opportunity to leave work early, so I did. However, when I arrived at his office an hour ahead of time, I was informed that they had canceled my appointment and the doctor had left already. They gave me no reason.... IF they had said "He had a family emergency/an urgent blahdyblah" I would have understood and left it at that. However, they simply said "We canceled you. He left early today. We can reschedule you." Then they made it a whole lot worse. Instead of saying sorry, and just rescheduling me... They rather dramatically said "We were trying to get a hold of you, We kept trying and trying!" which seemed to smell like real B.S. (I later checked my cell phone, they had called me only once, 8 minutes before I arrived at their office, and they said on the message they left, rather obnoxiously, "Oh, your voice mail is FINALLY working!" -_-I have never heard any reports of someone attempting to get a hold of me by cell phone and it "not working."Needless to say, I am not impressed and even though I live two seconds from his office, will not be returning.
I went to this location because it was super convenient (I'm always in Porter Square) and I just needed a routine vision exam to make sure I didn't need a stronger prescription. The woman I scheduled the appointment with was FABULOUS! Very nice and funny- I was optimistic about the actual practice before going. When I arrived- 15 minutes early for my 10am appointment- I was asked to fill out some basic paperwork which is routine. I had signed to not do a procedure involving some laser image of my eye- I knew insurance wouldn't cover it so I didn't want the added expense. It took the EMPTY office until 10:30am to take me in- please note that my appointment was for 10am and I arrived at 9:45am. No explanation as to why they were so late- as far as I could tell, I was one of two patients there and they were waiting as well. The actual optometrist was RUDE. Didn't explain anything and brushed off any questions or comments I had. He didn't explain any procedure he was doing, just told me to move from place to place. He also wouldn't allow my eyes to rest after some poking and prodding before doing another vision test. Then he informed me that he did the laser image of my eye that I SPECIFICALLY SIGNED OFF THAT I DIDN'T WANT. I was beyond livid. He didn't even ask. Then I proceeded to have to pay for this procedure which was not inexpensive and despite my vision difficulties lately, he said I did not need new lenses and to just keep with my current. I AM NEVER COMING BACK HERE- its not a legit business.
I have wearing corrective lens for something like 45 years and I found Dr. Sylvia the most professional specialist I have gone to, by far. I have a difficult prescription that few ODs will fit and fill and I have been able to continue with contact lenses with Dr. Sylvia. I agree with both previous reviews - it's a great, professional office but they are expensive. I chalk it up to you pay for what you get!
I really like Dr. Sylvia. I think he does a good job making sure the prescription is right for you, for both contacts and eyeglasses. This is a skill some people do not have, even if they have all the fancy equipment. I like how he's quick and professional, but he still listens and answers your eye health questions. Debra the wonderful lady at the desk is helpful and very nice.I do not like the new store he's in, I feel the eyeglasses frame selection is very limited, and I don't remember how much they were at the last place, but the 1 yr of contacts seemed really expensive. I'll go back for my eye exams, but don't know about purchasing contacts or glasses there.
I would not suggest this place. I am new to Boston and went in for a contact lens exam since I was completely out of contacts. I had the exam and asked for a pair of trial lenses to get me through until my new lenses could be ordered which I couldn't do at the appt. since my insurance card had not yet arrived. Apparently, the only lenses I can order are the ones they gave me as a trial. No one asked me what lenses I wanted and now when I ask for a different pair, they want another $95 for another exam. The second exam will of course turn out to be the exam same prescription, but they will not allow me to get the brand I want unless I pay another $95. Be careful with this place, you must do everything correctly or they will charge you more and more.

Selection Criteria
All the information you see here is based on our analysis of internet reviews across the seven major review platforms most used by consumers during their healthcare provider selection. The platforms we selected are Google, WebMD, Yelp, HealthGrades, Facebook, RateMDs, and Vitals. The analysis algorithm uses the compiled data of average score, recency of reviews, number of reviews, and the sentiment expressed in the written comments. It then assigns weight to each parameter based on the available research on how consumers use reviews in their doctor selection process. This report is designed to help identify the doctors with the best overall review score in an area and does not reflect the doctors' competence.
