HORRIBLE "bedside manner" flat, unemotional, allows nurse to do 90% of what you pay a doctor to do. Should retire or "move up" into admin at MUSC. NOT a people person doctor.

Many doctors seems to perform their visits with one hand on the door knob. Not Dr. McDonald. He was very attentive and asked questions, and then follow-up questions, and really took time to get a complete and full picture of my overall lifestyle (family history, stress at work, exercise, diet, sleep patterns, emotional state, et al). It was only after he had the whole picture did he jump into looking at manifest symptoms, suggested tests, and courses of treatment. He is a real human who treats his patients the same way. Extremely thoughtful and genuinely interested. Wanted to invite him home for dinner!Made referrals that were meaningful. Not to fast, not too slow. Seemed just right. He is a doctor I trust as a go to person for anything - he will make sure you are treated or referred to the right specialist. Now I know why he Internal Medicine docs are referred to as "doctors doctors".

Dr John W McDonald is one of the best physicians I have dealt with. I have worked in the medical field for 25+ years, working for many physicians in many fields. I know how a good physician treats a patient. Dr. McDonald is caring,thorough and right on the money with his diagnoses, no matter what specialist I need to see. Two of the doctors I work for have made him their own private physician for the same reasons. Great Job Dr. McDonald!
