Avera Behavioral Health Hospital's Online Review Report Card

Once again I was well taken care of at Avera. Fully staffed with true professionals, they meet every need. Drs, nurses, techs, social workers , counselors, all are attentive and caring . Avera Behavioral is the mecca for mental health services in the midwest. God bless all of you who work there from the Drs and nurses to those preparing the wonderful nourishing meals and keeping the unit immaculately clean.

Avera Health care is rooted in the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Catholic's have excellent Hospitals in America.

This place was nice, they helped me find the tools to use when I'm struggling and ways to overcome obstacles. The nurses and doctors were great to me and others that were staying at the time. However, the teacher in the adolescent unit NEEDS to be replaced.

I recently went to this nightmare of a place. I went in having tried killing myself. They put me on a hold within three days I was discharged to the streets. Came in two days later . I kept telling the doctors over and over I'm not stable enough to leave I saw the board of the state doctor told him the same thing he took my hold off I was discharged I have paperwork from was there and it said even if discharge I have a right to voluntary stay there until the help I need and are stable on new meds it makes me sick to my stomach it's all dollars to them the techs and nurses forced me to leave I even showed them the paperwork on my right to voluntary stay if your having a mental health crisis do not come here . I asked if I could go to HSC in Yankton for 30 days to stable out my bipolar I didn't meet their criteria I left with alot more anxiety depression and suicidal thoughts

Nothing short of a prison. Went in bad and cane out worse. The experience in the hospital was worse than what landed me there in the first place.

If I could give zero stars I would. First experience at this facility was a nightmare. Now within a year they want me to fill out all new paperwork & wait forever to get meds

Nurses were horrible. Doctors were incompetent and wouldn't listen to my family who clearly know my mental health history. They misdiagnosed me when I was clearly in psychosis. I received no help and came out worse and with a lot of bills. I was not allowed a brush so my hair was very matted. I was not really treated like a human being. I did enjoy spending time with some of the people I met there and ranting to them about how horrible this place is. Would not recommend!

I stayed at Behavioral Health back in May of 2022. The majority of the staff was helpful and kind. But there was one head nurse (older blonde lady) who was very condescending. Talked to adult patients like we were children. During my stay we had a couple tornado warnings and had to shelter in one of the halls. One woman got so scared she passed out. One nurse rushed to her side to help while this “head nurse” just turned around and roller her eyes. The other patients were more helpful at making me feel better than the actual program. While I do believe the majority of the staff truly care, the program itself is lacking in effectiveness.

This is the worst hospital for any child or anyone. Today I went to see my friend and they wouldn’t let me see her even though she wanted to, which I kinda understand doing to the fact I was with her family and family is only allowed. She is the most kindest person you will ever meet and when she is around someone that she is comfortable with she is talkative. But when her family went and saw her today she was a completely different person she could barely speak and the medication they have her on is not helping her what so ever. I have no idea what they are doing to her. But I know deep down that this hospital is doing something very wrong. My friend has never acted the way than she is now. I just want my friend back and this hospital is not helping her but making her worse.
