I had a scheduled appointment for a checkup on my eye years back. They sent me a cancelation notice due to health issues and they would get back to reschedule. Never happened. I now have cataracts forming on both eyes and serious night vision. Be nice if they hadn't deserted me to begin with.
Absolutely the best retina surgeon. My husband has had multiple detached retinas in both eyes since 2002 and Dr. Cherney has restored his sight every time. We wouldn't see anyone else.
Absolutely the best retina surgeon. My husband has had multiple detached retinas and surgeries and still has his sight. We wouldn't trust anyone else with his eyes.
Words cannot sufficiently express what a great person and dr Vanderbilt has. Dr Cherneyis tops.
i have been going to Dr. Cherney for four years now. I have previously gone to 4 other retina specialist. He has done more to improve my vision than all the other combined. He and his staff are exceptional. I would recommend him to anyone with retina problems.
Over the past several years, I have seen several ophthalmologists in 3 major medical communities. Dr. Cherney is the most outstanding professional I have seen in this field. He is very thorough in his examination of the eye, takes time to explain in detail the issues involved, and communicates very effectively. The fact that he is a professor for the retina fellows at Vanderbilt is further validation of his expertise. I feel very fortunate to have him caring for my vision and would highly recommend him.
Edward Cherney, MD, caused me to lose all confidence in VEI. I saw him for an annual ophthalmology evaluation. At the last visit, he spent most of the time talking about his own medical issues. He seemed unconcerned about my vision problems, and when I asked whether I should have cataract surgery, he said "ask your optometrist." Seriously. I have since gone to an ophthalmologist I know and trust in Los Angeles. She referred me to a retina specialist, who thoroughly evaluated my eyes, identified the reasons for declining vision, and recommended treatment. I've heard (from Drs. in Los Angeles) that Vanderbilt has "an excellent retina team." Perhaps that's true; however, Cherney never referred me to them, and had to travel out-of-state to find competent care.
Dr. Cherney restored my sight back in 1992. I was a diabetic who was afflicted with diabetic retinaopathy & was considered to be legally blind. Going through dialysis & awaiting a renal transplant I found myself unable to see. I dealt with my blindness for almost two years & Dr. Cherney became likr a brother to me. He would always get me in immediately if I began having eye bleeds associated with the retinopathy. He later did a fluid extraction which caused me to regain my sight. Thanks!!!!
Dr Cherney is knowledgeable but has difficulty communicating at patient level. Plan on 3 hrs when you get an appt and about 10 minutes when you get in to see him. On one occasion and some question on my part, the injection serum was changed which made me wonder if he has read my charts.
Dr. Cherney was recommended to me by my Optometrist. She had gone to him to have her own surgery done. To me, that was an excellent recommendation and he has not disappointed me. I always feel like he's paying attention and actually trying to do whatever is in my best interests. I highly recommend Dr. Cherney to anyone needing Ophthalmology.

Selection Criteria
All the information you see here is based on our analysis of internet reviews across the seven major review platforms most used by consumers during their healthcare provider selection. The platforms we selected are Google, WebMD, Yelp, HealthGrades, Facebook, RateMDs, and Vitals. The analysis algorithm uses the compiled data of average score, recency of reviews, number of reviews, and the sentiment expressed in the written comments. It then assigns weight to each parameter based on the available research on how consumers use reviews in their doctor selection process. This report is designed to help identify the doctors with the best overall review score in an area and does not reflect the doctors' competence.
