John Mclean's Online Review Report Card

I had been I’ll for a few years with pain and vomiting. Was always told at hospital that I had the flu. I am in my 80’s and the last episode I thought I would die. Same thing sent home from hospital with flu. Went to Dr. McLean because my family Dr. Wasn’t available.. He set up a series of tests and found I have a huge hiatus hernia which I was told was inoperable again at the hospital. Was referred to a GIvSpecialist and I was put on the urgent list for surgery in Edmonton. I just today got my appointment for surgery. Thanks thanks to Dr. McLean I have a chance at a better quality of life. Wonderful Doctor.

He's SO condescending! "Well that's too bad, it's like me not taking my heart medications". It's not like all other options were ruled out or if I wasn't a candidate for other options. Or: "unlike Dr. Google , I can actually examine you". No evidence that he's racist but it sure felt like it as he spoke to me like I was stupid even though I work in the health field; and of course because of my very brown skin. He needs a refresher in respectful patient conduct and anti-racism.

I had Dr. McLean as our family doctor for a few years. He was the best doctor we had and is missed at the clinic. I had in the past refered other people to him and another doctor when they were not happy woth their current doctor.

My husband saw Dr. McLean for almost 3 years when we lived in Yellowknife. He goes the extra mile to understand family history and does a lot to emphasize lifestyle changes before introducing medication. He's not stingy with referrals when asked for them. He's also good with taking initiative to follow up with patients. We really miss him as my husband's doctor.

I like him.i think he like any doctor works better with a patient if they have a chance to know their medical history a bit first. They just cannot have the time to know enough about a patients medical history the first few times to accurately treat them. The first time i seen him he was a bit stern about something i requested .i was taken back a bit. I gave him a chance and i kept him as my regular doctor. He is straight forward about his medical opinions which i like. Because one doctor i had before him for a few years ticked me off the last time i seen him because he wouldnt treat me on his own decision. "He said the doc you seen last time prescribed you this..."( a doc i seen when he was on vacation).i said why you going by what another doc says? You are my regular doc, i am asking for your help not the other doc...he got mad , he thought i was insulting him. I said no.i am trying to say that you have just as much say and control as the other doc...he didnt want to hear it and said i dont want you as my patient anymore! I said ok i don't think i want you as my doc anymore! He said that in front of my young son to. That doctor is still there. I told doc Maclean about it.he was shocked and showed empathy. He is way more professional than the other doc and he trusts his own medical judgement. Dr.Maclean is a great doctor and he stated "how he loves Yellowknife." i appreciate that Even though he could work any where else in the world he is happy here. Its not easy to keep doctors here. So its just a bonus to not have a different doc each time. :) i gave a very bad review for that other doc. Lol

Not knowledgeable about different Recognized Mental Diseases. Was unwilling to recognize them, even previously diagnosed by several Different Specialized Physicians. Lacking Greatly in Empathy. Seemed pressed for time, even though early for this appointment. Stick with Specialists even with the diffilculty in obtaining appointments.

Great family doctor. Willing to stand up and fight for what his patients need.

Great Dr if you can get into him. He knows his stuff and makes things happen. Very fortunate to have him in our town.
