Thomas A Hughes Md's Online Review Report Card

Dr. Hughes is very compassionate, knowledgeable and professional physician I have ever known. He is very honest and direct. He will answer your questions in terms that you can understand. He is also very kind. I appreciate Dr. Himmelstein for referring me to Dr. Hughes because I have seen a great improvement. I would definitely refer him to others.

Dedicated and is very interested in his patients well being. He has helped me over 25 plus years to get my diabetes under control. I have been a Type I diabetic for 62 years and have seen many endocrinologists but believe Dr. Hughes is the best. He uses his extensive experience with Type I diabetics to further their life and make diabetes easier to manage. To some people he may come across as not listening but he is methodical and those that stay with him realize he is doing his best to transform the deadly diabetic life into one that is as close to normal as possible. He does believe in vitamins and uses them with insulin to treat the whole individual's life. I've been to many endocrinologists but have never been given the doctor's personal cell number to call if I have trouble. He always answers my calls and listens intently to my particular problem and advises me how to handle (and I have always been given specific steps to circumvent additional errors.)

My original appointment was a phone appointment due to COVID. I am a migraine sufferer. Dr. Hughes listened well, and he explained my recovery process in a way that was very comprehensive and thorough. Unfortunately, Dr. Hughes made a mistake writing out my recovery migraine prescription, so insurance refused to pay and the pharmacy refused to refill when I was out. I left 3 messages on the doctor's assistant extension with no reply. The 4th call, the front desk finally answered my call (after 10 attempts mid morning during office hours), I explained that I was in a great amount of pain. I was transferred with no explanation to the doctor's assistance extension again. I was never called back, and the prescription problem was never resolved. I received a bill for $385 for the original 20 minute phone call with Dr. Hughes. I am now a satisfied patient at Palmetto Neurology. I have never received a return call about my request to transfer my patient files to the new doctor. I cannot recommend Tidewater Neurology.

I had the same experience as the reviewer from Southaven, except I didn't go back for a 2nd visit. I was having many symptoms of hypothyroidism, which he ascribed totally to weight gain, so he put me on a TON of medicines which made me feel even worse. His demeanor is very condescending. He trusts *too much* in drugs & he will only treat the numbers on your bloodwork. Don't expect him to treat your symptoms at all.

I’m beyond Blessed to have found Dr Hughes. He was highly recommended by my rheumatologist. My first visit, he went over all of my health issues thoroughly. Not only am I a diabetic that takes insulin daily, I also have different types of kidneys diseases, among many other things. Unlike my previous endocrinologist, he listened and considered my other illnesses & medications before making his diagnosis & changes. In just one month I could tell a difference in how I felt. He’s such a caring Dr!

This guy is a Quack. Would not send my worst enemy. Should have license revoked. He did not want to even listen to my long and complicated neurological history. Did not even listen to my past history which included a traumatic brain injury. He started prescribing basic stuff I heard with my first visit to neurologist 25 yrs ago He has a regimene her follows and everybody gets exactly the same spiel I Warn Everyone not to go to him and because of him I would NEVER go to anyone at TIDELANDS NEUROLOGY GROUP. I went with my daughter in law to see Dr Hughes. He was very evasive answering questions. I worked for over 20 years as a licensed practical nurse. And only because of my medical training and experience was I able to ask appreciate questions to understand what he was saying. And when I final started getting answers we understood he abruptly told us he did not have any more time to talk yo us as he had other patients to see. Leaving without finishing answering our questions. Now that was bad enough, but the next thing is so completely unforgivable. My daughter in law is in such severe pain she had to take a medical leave from work and has no income whatsoever. She applied for food stamps. She had a form that needed to be filled out by Dr Hughes. He has had the form over 2 weeks and still has not filled it out. Her deadline to turn it in has past. He had the paperwork 2 weeks before it needed to be turned in. And now that the deadline has past his office tells her they are billing her for $50.00 to fill out the food stamp form. Now if she had any money she would not be applying for food stamps. I understand charging insurance companies and attorneys for depositions and completing long in-depth forms. But to charge a patient with absolutely no income who is depending on family and friends to help her thru his painful and hard time is in my opinion totally unempathetic and totally absolutely greedy in the worst way. And it is bullying to his patient. It saying, “I know you have no money for food, so I’m going to hold on to this form and let you starve until you find a way to beg borrow or steal the $50.00. Because you have absolutely no choice but to pay me or you can not get food until you agree to pay me first. “. Obviously he has no idea what it is like to not know where your next meal is coming from. This is an act of someone with absolutely no compassion whatsoever for the patients he sees. They are simply a dollar amount to him.

Before my appointment, I read many of the reviews of Dr. Hughes, most of which were negative, so I went into my appointment with guarded expectations. However, I found Dr. Hughes to be congenial, attentive, and very informative about my situation. He took his time, listened to all my questions, and did the best job of describing what my problems are and how long it should take to correct them better than my surgeon, GP, or the orthopedist I had seen the week before. He ordered an EMG for me, which I'm looking forward to having done, and continuing to working with Dr. Hughes to solve my neurological health issues.

Horrible. Very condescending and wouldn’t listen to anything I said. After two visits I still haven’t been able to tell him all of my symptoms because he will not take the time to listen. I have all of the symptoms of hypothyroidism and when I expressed concern about my unexplained weight gain, he prescribes a diabetes medication that causes WEIGHT GAIN! When I gained 7 pounds in a month on it; he refused to prescribe something else and wants to up the dosage of this medication. Awful!

I went to Dr. Hughes for Psuedotumor Cerebri. For my 1st appt, I had to wait over an hour to see him. The office staff was rude and would not answer any questions. After finally getting back to see him, he decided that I needed a Lumbar Puncture done and performed the procedure in the office at a later date- that I again had to wait an insane amount of time for. I had informed him that my travel distance is quite far and that did not concern him. After my procedure, I developed a spinal headache- if you've ever had one, you know that they are the most debilitating headaches. I tried calling the office 4 times to get a script for a blood patch. Another procedure to get rid of the spinal headache. No one would return my call. There was no follow up from the nursing / Dr. staff in the office to make sure that I was even ok after having had the procedure done in the office. I ended up having to get another Dr. to order the procedure. Never went back to him because of the horrible service he and his office provided. I have since found another great Dr. that completely listens to my concerns and treats me with respect.
