I have cervical surgery for cervical/spinal stenosis at St. Thomas Midtown. My surgeon Doug Matthews (recommended as the best neurosurgeon in Nashville and he lived up to that name). His P.A. Patrick explained everything thoroughly though I chose to not watch the video procedure tape. The surgery went very well with good pain relief. I would have been sent home the following day, but some unforeseen complications arose not related to my surgery and underwent a second procedure the same day. My husband had left. Dr. Matthews personally took care of the matter. My advice to anyone undergoing any surgery; have a family member, relative but most of all hire a Registered Nurse with a degree in nursing to be with you in the hospital. There is too much paperwork that these overworked, underpaid employee caregivers must chart and as a result patient care suffers.

Had lumbar fusion with disk replacement. Great Dr. explained everything well. Did a very successful surgery. I am healing well and have no more intense sciatic nerve pain.

I was referred to Dr. Mathews for a surgical evaluation in May 2020. Needless to say I was apprehensive and nervous about the prospect of needing surgery on my cervical spine. Dr. Mathews allayed my fears completely! He explained everything in great detail and correlated my pathology with my MRI scan. I felt very reassured about my upcoming surgery. I was extremely comfortable with him performing the ACF. Pre-op, intra-op and post op care was excellent. I hope I do not require any further surgery, but if I do I will not hesitate to have Dr. Mathews take care of me. P.S. He also has a wonderful and caring bedside manner!

Dr. Mathews, was very gracious with his time explaining details to me about my back problem, he took the time to make sure I understood what I could look forward to in terms of getting back my mobility and strength. His staff also was very kind in taking care of me while in his office. I would highly recommend Dr. Mathews and his team to anyone who needed his service.

I will always be grateful to Dr. Mathews for giving me back a pain free life. Dr. Mathews performed an emergency spinal fusion on me 10-31-19. I went from being flat on my back in excruciating pain to riding my horse and doing the other rigorous activities I love within a few months. The amazing thing is Dr. Mathews delayed a family trip to do my surgery even though I was a new patient. He simply stated, "I had to get you fixed", when I mentioned this. I have referred him to my close friends & family whom I want to receive the expert professional care that I did. I hope Dr. Mathews continues to practice for a long time for I plan to be his patient for life. I must also commend his office staff for their kind yet professional attitude. It has been a year since surgery and I was recently released but Dr. Mathews parting words resonated loudly with me, "Call me if you need me." You can bet I will, Doc, and Thank You.

Dr. Mathews was extremely late to my appointment. I felt he was extremely rude and rushed during my appointment. He cut me off many times during the conversation and told me nothing was on my MRI I have two bulging discs in my back. He didn’t offer any assistance and when I asked why I’m still experiencing pain if nothing was wrong he said he didn’t know. I’ve been consistent in my treatment and exhausting every effort I can to get help. I don’t feel like he did the same.
