Vanderbilt Oral And Maxillofacial Surgery's Online Review Report Card

I saw Dr.Mckenna for TMJD -painful joint, 10+ years of dysfunction, degeneration of joint seen on MRI. For those considering McKenna for treatment of TMJ issues I would strongly advise going elsewhere. Mckenna won't do any procedures involving entering the joint space. He seemed to be trying to spin a narrative that my pain was mostly muscular despite me saying it definitely isn't and is infact nerve and arthritis pain. His default recommendation was amitriptyline and if that didn't help (and why would it help a degenerated joint?) then he would try Modified Condylotomy - the only procedure he seems to do. He handed me a packet explaining Modified Condylotomy, every reference was to studies from no later than the 90's done by only him and his team. I got an opinion from another OMS who said he could not fathom why a Modified Condylotomy would help my joint. Mckenna's approach is singular and archaic, condemning patients' TMJ conditions to get worse. He heard what he wanted and not what I was saying in order to support his already formed opinion. I had my wisdom teeth removed, April 25, 2025 Dr. K was the surgeon, let me tell you all about this experience. On April 25, 2025, I had my wisdom teeth removed because they were causing me a lot of pain while eating. As a result, I was losing weight. I had a consultation a few months before my surgery with Dr. K., who was very excited to be doing my surgery and I was grateful to finally have relief in my mouth. The surgery took about 40 minutes, and I was discharged immediately. The first few days were tough. I was in pain and couldn’t eat or drink much. On day four, I was in excruciating pain. I called the office and told them that the pain was still there, and the pain meds weren’t working. They got me in right away. From day five to day seven, I was still in a lot of pain, so I made another appointment. I explained everything that was going on to Dr. K. She prescribed me more pain meds and said it should subside. Since it was an impacted tooth, impacted teeth can cause a lot of issues. From day eight to day eleven, I was still in a lot of pain. I went back to the doctor’s office and explained that I was still having trouble eating on the side where the impacted tooth was. I couldn’t sleep, and it was just causing me a lot of pain. I was taking pain meds after pain meds, but nothing was helping. I was doing heat compresses and ice, but nothing was working. I went back to the doctor’s office yesterday, May 8, 2025. They got me in quickly and immediately saw Dr. K. She went into my socket, completely rinsed it out, pushed out a bunch of pus, and I immediately felt relief. All the pain I had been going through, all the agony, all the pain meds gone in less than five minutes. She gave me the correct syringe to rinse my mouth out, explained everything to me, and said that if I needed anything else, just let her know. I was a bit hesitant to try this place at first, reading the reviews and seeing some not-so-great experiences. But I decided to give it a shot as a last resort, and I’m so glad I did! Thanks to Dr. K and her amazing team, I’ve been feeling much better all day and all night. I’ve been able to sleep, eat, and even get a good yawn out! I really appreciate everything everyone has done for me here. Even though I’m coming in all the time because something was clearly wrong, I know I’m making the right choice. They’ve taken great care of me, and I highly recommend this place and Dr. K. She’s incredibly sweet, kind, and very skilled in what she does.

I came in through the ER with fractures in my jaw. When you are in the ER, you don’t get to choose your doctor, but I’m so glad I got Dr. Hasstedt. He provides excellent care and is very caring. He repaired my broken chin and condyle and kept me informed on what to expect during my recovery and answered all my questions when I was anxious. I healed very well with no issues. He is very skilled and has a wonderful bedside manner.

Dr. Spencer Hailey and Jonathan Borg did a great job with my surgery, making me feel at ease, talking laughing and joking, and even helped cool me off when I overheated during the process. Great staff, everyone was super helpful and nice. 10/10, would recommend.

Staff was super friendly and the team of doctors were wonderful. Highly recommend this team for any oral surgical needs.

I wish I could give them no stars. I’ve been given the run around. I’ve lost 30 pounds in less than a month because of the current situation with my mouth. I asked for something for the vomiting and the doctor wouldn’t answer the question. I also have a history of sepsis and my pulse is showing tachycardia. Maybe listen to your patients instead of being a pompous jerk. It isn’t the doctor dealing with all this, it’s me. This place is a joke. Edit: When your patient is literally puking violently in front of you, you’re supposed to help, but send them somewhere else with nothing for it. I can’t keep water down and still, nothing for it. I don’t want damn pain medication, I want something for my vomiting.

I was told that I was going to get my X-ray for my oral but I never received it and when I try to speak to someone and ask for help nobody is there to help they just try to transfer the call to some other person

Although I do not dislike the dentist or staff I have been seeing, the billing process is ridiculous! I had a periodic exam/cleaning, which according to my BC/BS of TN advantage, I am covered for up to two apts within a calendar year. After my teeth were cleaned and polished, I was asked by the hygienist if I had any concerns. I told her I had noticed a hairline crack in my front tooth. She called in the dentist, and the crack was noted, but not addressed. I got my new toothbrush and left after scheduling my next apt in 6 months. When I got the billing, two codes were used: one for adult prophylaxis, which was covered in full, and another for "problem focus". After speaking to three billing reps and sending messages to both the dentist and billing, I was told that any concern I voiced added another cost to the visit! Even though nothing additional was done. I have been going to this dentist for two years now and when SHE looks in my mouth and says we're watching # 24, and that large amalgam, etc., there IS NO additional charge, but if I voice an issue, it's additional. It makes no sense to me and NO ONE in the whole VANDIE organization understands my confusion. I messaged Patient Advocacy, and they referred me to Patient Relations and when I painted the picture of this incident, her response was, "I'm not in billing" and "you need to talk to your insurance". My insurance did not create the codes that were submitted, Vanderbilt did! So frustrating. I have never been treated by a medical organization this way before and I have been treated by many, from San Francisco to Boston and beyond.

Worst reception experience since the last time I’ve gone to Vanderbilt. Like pulling teeth. Had to call them three times just to get an appointment, only to arrive within the window and still be told I couldn’t be seen.

Never do surgery here. I’m a Vandy student . The experience couldn’t be worse. The doctor missed 3 pieces of bone and left them in my socket in the wisdom teeth extraction surgery. If you want to experience double pain, go here
