List of Gary L Werntz's Reviews
Dr. Werntz is the best GP I've ever had I've been seeing Dr. Werntz for a few years now. Very non-judgemental. Always takes time to talk through things. I've never felt rushed and he asks great questions. I've recommended him to friends. Also, I'm part of the LGBTQ community. He is an Ally who gets it and supports.
AWFUL OFFICE I attempted to make an appointment as a new patient for Dr. Werntz. I booked an appointment and was sent the paperwork. On the paperwork, it states that they will call you to book an appointment once the paperwork is filled out. There were a few weeks between the time I called to make the appointment and the time I sent in the paperwork. The day before the appointment came I didn't receive a call, text, or any notification confirming the appointment. I assumed it wasn't booked. Two days later I got a call that I missed the appointment. I called to explain what happened and try and book a new appointment. I called four times and was told I would get a callback. On the fourth call, I was informed their policy is to not make appointments for patients who miss their first appointments. The most incompetent medical office I have ever dealt with.
Completely misdiagnosed me for a skin rash that later turned out to be bacterial. Before even getting started he tried to pass me off to a dermatologist since it was skin related (first available wouldn't be for another two weeks). This guy completely jumped to the most common diagnosis without even looking at my rashes first. Just as poor was the fact I knew he was wrong (this spread was more aggressive) and after *I urged him to please look at it* it was clear that he was completely wrong. I then had to urge him to prescribe me medication to preventatively stop the spread which he was hesitant to do and told me to just buy an OTC cream. Two days later I went to Urgent Care because the rash had spread and gotten so much worse. The Nurse Practitioner said that everything this guy did was wrong, that it was clearly not common fungal and anybody that looked at it could see that, and that even the medication he recommended was far too weak to put a dent on the problem. After three days with new medication I was in recovery. I don't care if/how intelligent this guy might be. His apathy and malpractice that day to me while being (thankfully not fully) trusted as a doctor almost caused me severe health problems that needed fixing by someone more competent in Urgent Care -- the last thing I want is for more to experience the same, especially if they don't self-advocate as much as I had to just to recover.
Dr Hutto is one of the best primary care physicians
Dr. Gary has been my doctor for over 20 years. He is compassionate and will listen to all you want to tell. He also will offer to direct you to appropriate specialists when they are needed.
I was Dr Werntz's patient for several years and quit seeing him because he never knew what my medical history was and made errors when discussing my condition. There were times when he did not know the published info on a minor condition, and when I had specialist tests, he did not know what tests I had nor the report sent to him, while claiming he did know. When pressed to discuss what he knew, he stumbled and did not know then hurriedly tried to look it up. I felt he was not interested in me as a patient albeit as a person to chat with. He loves visiting with his patients. That was not enough for me. My current doctor knows my history, appears to have read my record before I arrive so that I can easily discuss issues with her. Our conversation is usually limited to medical topics, we don't shoot the breeze; I view her as educated, up to date on medical research, and professional. I have enough friends, I need a doctor who is paying attention.
I'm not a picky patient and rarely leave poor review. However I had a skin rash that was progressing rapidly and needed to have some sort of guidance ASAP because it got worse by the day. I went into Red River at 8 am for an appointment and got assigned to Werntz since my normal PCP was out. He wouldn't even look at my rash properly or give me any sort of prescription (for symptoms or the root cause) until I said "don't you at least... want to look at it?". He just told me to go to some oddly specific dermatologist (probably a friend) that wasn't available for three weeks. After pressing he gave me a prescription for very low-grade anti-fungal. The Urgent Care doctor I went to three next days later as the rash worsened looked at me and said everything this guy prescribed was wrong and much too weak to put a dent in the problem and that was clear just looking at it. After she adjusted my medication, I was fine in four days. Who knows what would've happened if I listened to this guy, and I hope this doesn't happen to someone else. Remove the lazy attitude or if need be the practicioner, otherwise people with less cynicism will get hurt.
I was so extremely blessed to have found Gary. When I left the state of Iowa to move to Austin I didn't know anyone and didn't know who was a good doctor and who wasn't. Gary was my specialty & primary care doctor from the beginning. I have been seeing him now for over 24 years & in that time I've followed him to every practice he was a part of & I'm so glad I did. Many other doctors have seemed to prefect the quick in and out, honestly leaving me wondering if they could possibly know what I even look like, not to mention wondering if they even listened to the problem in the first place. Gary doesn't make you feel that he's rushed or that he has something better to do. He takes his time to talk & listen to you, he seems to really appreciate that there isn't one answer for everyone so he takes his time to get to know you. There really are no words to express my gratitude to Gary for all the years I've been his patient. Gary truly is the best doctor I've ever encountered. If you need a doctor Gary is the best.
I never feel rushed. I always feel like Dr. Werntz is actually listening. I appreciate our no-nonsense, logical approach conversations about my health. He is thorough without ordering unnecessary tests/procedures. I have been a patient at Red River Family Practice for 22 years and would not go elsewhere. All of the docs there are great (have seen most when I needed a quick appointment and Dr. Werntz was booked).
He treats you like a person NOT a patient. He listens . He cares. Don't be late for your appointment cause he won't be. He doesn't schedule appts. every 10 minutes evidently, because I once apologized for taking too long asking questions and he said he leaves time for me at my appointments. Because he makes enough money. He doesn't need to rush his patients. That attitude probably saved my life at my last visit, as after we finished the Dr / patient stuff we were talking person to person. I said something that made him decide to run an additional test. Turned out I had a pulmonary embolism. Hospital said if it had advanced I would have been dead b4 I hit the ground. We found that out after 20 minutes of talking about my health. If he had rushed me through like most other Dr's, cause time is money after all, I would be dead. Thanks Dr Werntz. You are a credit to your profession.

Selection Criteria
All the information you see here is based on our analysis of internet reviews across the seven major review platforms most used by consumers during their healthcare provider selection. The platforms we selected are Google, WebMD, Yelp, HealthGrades, Facebook, RateMDs, and Vitals. The analysis algorithm uses the compiled data of average score, recency of reviews, number of reviews, and the sentiment expressed in the written comments. It then assigns weight to each parameter based on the available research on how consumers use reviews in their doctor selection process. This report is designed to help identify the doctors with the best overall review score in an area and does not reflect the doctors' competence.
