List of Iden M. Cowan's Reviews
I told her that I had a bad experience with serotonin syndrome and she prescribed nortriptyline anyway. She conned me into an epidural steroid injection which I have had 7 times before. Same results. No change in my pain levels. Then she wants to charge me another 25 dollars to talk to me on the phone. Do yourself a favor and find a dr who hears you.
Dr. Cowan is very personable on the surface but I feel I got the “bum’s rush” from her. 1st visit, she recommended epidural at a surgery center in Austin and even then said, “if it doesn’t work…then consider a nerve stimulation implant.” She gave me the website to look it up and gave my name to the Boston Scientific sales rep. The rep called me and stated she would be in the office when I had my follow up with Dr Cowan. I had the injection and guess what? It didn’t work. Sure enough the BS rep was there when I had my follow up. So meeting me for the 1st time, the injection and the follow up she’s ready to insert a device in my spine. She never asked for contact info for my previous pain management doctor who had been treating me for 20+ years or my neurosurgeon who did my back surgery. I’ll find someone else.
Went to Dr Cowan because my regular doctor could not figure out my knee and hip pain. Dr Cowan figured it out immediately and put me on 800 mg ibuprofen and hydrocodone 5/325 twice a day. She did injections in my back and when they worked she did the nerve burning and I am still on the low dose of pain pills and my pain is now minimal. I haven’t cried over the pain in 6 months. A lot of people complain about her lowering her meds but that is her job. She is suppose to help you manage pain not feed you with more pills. My husband has been in pain management for 10 years and his doctor never listens to him. He just pushes more drugs so I am very happy Dr Cowan was not like that. I miss her already since she moved back to Texas but I hope that Dr Hunt will be just as good. I haven’t met him yet because of COVID-19 but if he is like her we will get along just fine
This Dr. should have her license yanked. Nightmare person. Cruel, cold uncaring. I see here others who feel the same. Find another Dr as to your benefit she has moved to Texas. I am 71 years old and have had to be on opioid pain medications for 3 years. I was in a car accident and my back is so weak I can't get out of bed in the morning without taking a medication. UNFORTUNATELY my Dr moved to CA and Ida Cowan took his place. I have never in my life been talked to or treated so horribly, like she enjoyed it. I also have neuropathy of the hands and feet. I have the pleasure of having migraines starting about 9 months ago. No conversation of my chart. A "procedure" was and I do not want that. My quality of life is manageable with the medications. She treated me like I was an addict, cut my medications and talked to me like an animal. When I stepped out of the room the girls were quietly saying how sorry they were, over and over. Neither one is there now.
Dr. Iden Cowan and I use the word Dr. loosely cares nothing about helping with your pain when I saw her she was too busy telling me I needed to lose weight and she apparently didn’t even look at my chart as I have a deadly allergy to a med I had taken and she put me on another med with the same properties and my drug refused to fill it because of that problem so I called back asking for something new not in that class and she told me that the only other option I had that she was willing to help me with was putting in a pain pump and doing a nerve block and putting a pain stimulator in my back with stimulation leads that will move if you move the wrong way after they are surgically put in and then you have to go through the procedure all over again plus the wires often come out of the leads and my having Arthritis all over for years I know if I had the things done she wanted to do my Arthritis would have gotten much worse because of the procedures but she didn’t care for a moment.
Dr. Cowan was not willing to listen to me about my pain, talked over me and ordered tests and therapies that were unnecessary. I was disappointed with the care I recieved
I do recommend Dr. Cowan to anyone and everyone who asks me about a reference. She is a wonderful, compassionate, competent and caring doctor. I would not have been able to continue working for the past four years without her help. She is constantly seeking a way to lessen my chronic pain and allow me to continue enjoying my life with my grandchildren. Because it is important to me that I not become addicted to opiates, and i cannot do my job while taking them, she has worked with me to keep my dosage at a very low .5 mg hydrocodone, while using injections and other interventions to keep the worst pain at bay. I cannot imagine a more caring medical professional. That said, if you are just seeking opiates, she is not the doctor for you, because she is not there to just prescribe medication, but to actually work to diminish or even terminate your pain. I was referred to her after my first laminectomy; a second one failed. I will stay with Dr. Cowan for the best care I can get.
I don't mind waiting a little longer in the waiting room for a Dr that explains everything to me. One that takes the time to make sure that I understand what is going on with my body. Her staff truly cares about each patient. I would recommend her to any one of my friends or family. Always friendly and knowledgeable, willing to answer any and all questions. Love this Dr and staff!!!.
If there are any other possibilities, choose another doctor and another pain clinic. This one does not care about their patients.
She's just the person if you want a doctor that doesn't listen..she didn't ask me about pain..so naturally she didn't listen. She did all the talking as if reading a book. And she must do very well pushing spinal injections for both migraines and knee pain as she had 2 nurses taking notes while she talked. Most docs these days can't pay that much help.

Selection Criteria
All the information you see here is based on our analysis of internet reviews across the seven major review platforms most used by consumers during their healthcare provider selection. The platforms we selected are Google, WebMD, Yelp, HealthGrades, Facebook, RateMDs, and Vitals. The analysis algorithm uses the compiled data of average score, recency of reviews, number of reviews, and the sentiment expressed in the written comments. It then assigns weight to each parameter based on the available research on how consumers use reviews in their doctor selection process. This report is designed to help identify the doctors with the best overall review score in an area and does not reflect the doctors' competence.
