I’ve worked at the Center since 2017 and have been fortunate to gain experience in crisis intervention, human resources, adult case management, and community outreach. I primarily work with adults ages 18+ who have been diagnosed with mental health conditions and/or substance use disorders. My background is in rehabilitation counseling, and I am a licensed chemical dependency counselor intern.I’ve stuck around because I enjoy making long-term connections with clients in recovery. Meeting folks where they are and helping them make informed decisions about their treatment is my objective. My clients’ perspectives and experiences have made a huge impact on my professional outlook and personally motivate me to keep going even on difficult days when the work seems overwhelming.I couldn’t ask for a better introduction to the mental health field. I also have supportive colleagues who have encouraged me every step of the way. If you want to make a direct impact on your community the flexibility MHMR provides could be a great fit.Pros: Employees are eligible to transfer positions after being in a role for at least 6 months, paid time off increases with years served, wellness incentives for benefits, executive management is open to new ideas and has tried to increase supports for staff members such as virtual committees and clubsCons: Heavy workload for the pay partially due to frequent employee turnover and/or positions changes, mental health and substance use stigma in general, required Center trainings can be lengthy especially for the first month as a new hire

I have worked at the Center for over 10 years. I worked in various positions, programs, and levels. The Center has afforded me career growth and opportunities. The staff here care about the individuals we serve and coworkers. It truly feels like a family. I've had the pleasure of making lifelong friendships working alongside some wonderful people. In the positions I have held there has been generous flexibility, great benefits, and great experience. If you are a compassionate individual looking to learn and grow you definitely should work here. I greatly believe everyone in the mental health field should work at their local mental health authority at some point because the experience you will gain is like nothing else!

**Update**I wrote a letter into the Texas Dept of Health and Human Services. From what I can tell, multiple changes have occurred, and both their internal system and the state will keep them accountable. I have seen the change in communication already. I will keep this post up for accountability's sake, but wanted to note that some changes in the right direction have been made.Initial Complaint: I am rarely one to complain, but I’m so angry. I am writing this as I’m experiencing medication withdrawal symptoms due to Denton MHMR’s lack of competency on multiple fronts. My provider is fine, but the nurses and administration have failed me in my two months there, and placed both my mental and physical health at risk.Here’s the story that has me here: I came out of an appointment with a scheduled appointment. After a month, I went to refill my meds, and found there were no refills. I called three consecutive days multiple times, all while not having my meds. For two of those days, nurses and staff assured me that my provider would have something sent to the pharmacy to hold me over to the next appointment. All three times I went to the pharmacy, no such action had been taken. I am writing this while having withdrawal symptoms from not having my meds for three days now. I have called the after hours line twice-once with success; the person on the line said a nurse would be with me to sort out my medications for the night; no such call happpened.
