Incredible scope of knowledge and experience. Has very good communication skills and confidence.
Dr J was my hero for the first three acdf surgeries. The fourth was a nightmare. He left the surgery for a more important patient and left me in the hands of his students to close me. A bone was left sticking through my dura for a couple weeks. Spine fluid was pouring out my incision and it became infected as well as all the hardware he had just put in. When this was brought to his attention he acted like it was my fault. No apology. It was a radiologist that discovered where the leak was coming from. My C3 at the place his team closed me up with. It should always be checked to make sure no bones are sticking up or out. Anyway, an emergency second surgery was performed free of charge. Big whoop. I was made to lay on my back for next three weeks with a lumbar drain. He also placed extra large screws in my C3/4 protruding into my spinal canal causing Myelomalacia. I also got an infection one step behind meningitis. And then I was on all kinds of antibiotics and other fluids to try to get rid of that infection. I almost died. Obviously I didn’t. But now I’ve lost my career as a teacher. I haven’t been able to work anywhere due to pain.. since 2023. The Myelomalacia has gotten progressively worse over the years and the pain I suffer from nerve damage is great. I tried to sue. And I was told no other doctor would take the stand against him because he was too famous. I now live on medication to control the pain, and the nerve damage and will Never receive my Social Security disability because I had worked too long as a new teacher and Too short as a social worker. So I’m not a Dr. Johnson fan anymore. I trusted him. I never thought this would happen and that he would totally just leave me like this why he lives his high and mighty life up in Montana. He’s not the kind man some of you people think he is. He made me wait 4 hours almost every visit. For a five minute or less chat with him. My case made a mention on an episode on Greys Anatomy. It was my story. Wish I could of told it.
Dr. Johnson has treated my spine condition that built up over time. As a medical specialist myself in spine disorders I believe I have extensive insight with respect to judging and acknowledging excellence in a doctor and especially a surgeon. Dr Johnson cured my spine condition which was complicated. I achieved a full return to normal and no further symptoms for decades now. I was able to exceed my prior physical sports activities. Doctor Johnson is not only a doctor’s doctor, he is also in my opinion one of but a few superlative spine surgeons in the US and probably the world based on his world wide referral base.
AWFUL experience. The incompetency of the office staff is just a reflection of the nature of the doctor. Incredibly rude and distracted. I dont care what this doctor claims to know or not know but stay away at all costs.
I have no idea what he does or doesn’t know. This doctor is one of the rudest people I’ve ever met. It was a few years ago now. He walked in with a black eye snd it very quickly apparent why. I stopped my husband from giving him a second one! What a winner.
I was unable to sit for more than 20 minutes without severe pain due to two deteriorated discs at different levels on my spine. After consulting with three other surgeons, I met with Dr. Johnson. Unlike other surgeons who wanted to cut into my spine immediately, Dr. Johnson spent almost a year to determine the best course of action for me. He took great care in not rushing in, but instead he studied my case, took extra tests, and asked for input from trusted colleagues. Ultimately, he had to perform three surgeries to fix my problem, but I’m so thankful that he only did one surgery at a time in an effort to do no more surgery than was absolutely necessary. Dr. Johnson is a superior doctor and his entire team are all outstanding! They all treated me with the utmost respect, care and diligence throughout the entire ordeal. Now my husband is planning a surgery with Dr. Johnson to correct severe stenosis of his neck. He first consulted with a surgeon in our area who came highly recommended as someone who is conservative about cutting too fast. That doctor advised an extensive (and very risky) two-day procedure that included numerous fusions of my husband’s neck and a titanium cage, among other things. The doctor told him that he could be paralyzed from the neck down without the surgery, but that the surgery itself came with the risk of paralyzation. We went to Dr. Johnson for a second opinion, and once again he suggested a much less invasive course of action, a single disc replacement. While my husband’s cervical area is not perfect, Dr. Johnson’s mantra is, “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”. If more work is needed later for my husband, Dr. Johnson will address those issues as they become a necessity. Needless to say, we are thrilled with Dr. Johnson and his entire staff. They believe in a level of excellence that is hard to find. When dealing with your body, trust only the best!
He did a defective surgery. Cervical Spine. I am now impaired, always in pain, I have severe nerve damage since the surgery. Beware and go to another surgeon. He ruined my life!
Dr. Johnson saved my bacon way back in 1996, after several other world class Neurosurgeons said " They saw nothing wrong, so go home, relax." I have stuck like glue to him ever since and time and time again he has proved himself to be head & shoulders above the rest. I thank God I had the luck to meet him 25 years and 12 spinal surgeries ago!
Wonderful and thorough and knowledgeable staff is efficient
After suffering for two years from extreme back pain I got operated by Dr Johnson in December 2018. Fifteen days after the surgery my pain was gone totally. One year after the surgery I am 100% pain free. He is my miracle doctor.

Selection Criteria
All the information you see here is based on our analysis of internet reviews across the seven major review platforms most used by consumers during their healthcare provider selection. The platforms we selected are Google, WebMD, Yelp, HealthGrades, Facebook, RateMDs, and Vitals. The analysis algorithm uses the compiled data of average score, recency of reviews, number of reviews, and the sentiment expressed in the written comments. It then assigns weight to each parameter based on the available research on how consumers use reviews in their doctor selection process. This report is designed to help identify the doctors with the best overall review score in an area and does not reflect the doctors' competence.
