It's hard to be the Bard, baby. Unless you're this hard Bard, which has been part of Central Park's landscape since 1872. Commissioned by American admirers of his work after reading about similar monuments erected in Europe, it was meant to mark the 300th anniversary of Shakespeare's birth, but much like so much progress today, was delayed by southern states clinging to the past & the Civil War. The statue was designed by John Quincy Adams Ward, who had done a few other statues throughout the park.

One of many statues along literary walk in central Park and the most famous as visitors and tourist bypass the other writers and poets and make a beeline to see billy . The bronze statue of Shakespeare's standing tall has aged well over the years during the ever changing seasons including the brutal winters .We all had to read and discuss Shakespeare's work during our school years and his writings are still relevant today. Looking at the bronze statue that looks heavy like a tank I ponder how difficult was it to set it up and my pondering stopped as soon as two nice sisters from Belgium asked if I could take a pic of them standing next to Billy and I can never say no to the lovely pigeon sisters . Stand tall in Central Park Billy you have not aged or rusted after all these years.

The Man. The Myth. The Legend. Or simply referred to as The Bard.A literary giant. A scribe who's works have been read, discussed, pondered, dissected, and enjoyed over time. Many have been made into movies, plays, and musicals. Acting giants have portrayed his characters. Often imitated but never duplicated. This monument is a dedication to his greatness. He stands apart from the others along the Literary Walk in Central Park. It's a well done statue and considering it's age and the elements has held up well.

William Shakespeare Statue is another statue I find appealing to look at and photograph. Somehow I feel it makes him look a little more handsome than other renderings I've seen. He's definitely noteworthy for placement near the Literary Walk. He has his own spot of distinction away from the others. He's standing while the others are seated. William Shakespeare is a bronze sculpture created in 1870 by John Quincy Adams Ward. This whole area is full of statues and busts of famous people. I suggest you make it a stop when you wander through Central Park. I'm a fan of the area although I prefer photographing the Arches and Bridges!

This statue lies at the southern end of a pathway in Central Park that's officially known as "The Mall" but is also known as the "poets' walk" or "literary walk" because it's one of many statues of poets and writers.In fact, it was the first such statue, having been placed here in 1872 to honor the 300th anniversary of Shakespeare's birth. Incidentally, a person by the name of John Wilkes Booth was one of the performers who helped raise money for it in 1864, just a few months before he committed a historically deplorable act.For a statue that's been around so long, it's in pretty good condition. It still looks finely detailed and realistic, and there weren't any obvious signs of weathering or vandalism when I stopped by.

I had surgery at UVRMC 02-22-18. I was lucky enough to have Dr. Shakespeare as my anesthesiologist. He was friendly and professional. When he asked about my past experiences/concerns with anesthesia, he listened to what I had to say. This was, by far, the best experience I ever had with anesthesia. No nausea, I felt I woke quickly, minimal pain immediately post-op but not over medicated. If we could request our anesthesiologist, he would be my pick, hands down ! Thank-you, Dr. Shakespeare !
