I think Dr Helm is the best Dr I know, I had 3 spinal surgeries in Bristol and Johnson city and difference is like night and day ,I live 4 hours away from UVA and it is well worth the drive I wouldn't go no where else, the Doctor and his staff were so good to me, before and after the surgery I had done in December 10 2021 and I am going back this month to talk about another surgery I need done, I would not go any where else for treatment and I trust them with what ever they say I need done

He does not care. He forgot he had seen me 2 times. On the 3rd one reintroduced him self. Should have looked at my chart!!! This was a big red flag to me. Likes to order test. I drove up there 3 time 4 hours each way. So find a dr that well care.

I would NEVER recommend this physician. He was unprepared for the appointment. He never bothered to examine the patient...(check balance, gait, etc). He ignored our questions regarding neurological symptoms such as memory loss and aphasia. He spent less than 10 minutes in the room, most of which was looking at the computer, scrolling through the MRI images. When asked about his experience with the type of cyst that had been removed by the surgeon in the hospital, he became visibly hostile and stated "he'd been doing this for 25 years". I am disgusted and am filing a formal complaint with UVA

It took me 3 weeks to get into seeing Dr Helm. I didn’t have to haves referral. I did go in a bit early to my appointment. But I still didn’t sit a wait more than 5 minutes in the waiting room. One of the RN’s took me back to my room. She checked me in, asking all the normal questions. Then told me he would be in with me in just a few minutes. When he came in he was pleasant and told me what he thought and asked me about my symptoms. He took the time to answer all my questions and even let me know what to expect afterwards. I even forgot to ask one question so I ask the nurse, an she came right back with the answer. I believe I will trust him to do my back surgery. And he was my second opinion, which he was unaware. I’ve worked for doctors in my past. And I’m pretty picky and expect them to do their job and to give me all the information about what is or will be happening to my body.

My husband & I were very disappointed with Dr. Helm. No compassionate whatsoever from Dr. Helm. Treated us like he didn't care about what we were telling him. We lost alot of hope today with UVA because of this doctor. Very disappointed.

My experience with Dr Helm was absolutely superior ,. All aspects of this including the surgery was superior . This was above and beyond my expectations. Richard ZIMINSKI

I wish I never met this doctor! What was supposed to be one surgery turned into 3 and a combined month of hospital stays. He screwed up and of course wouldnt admit it but instead blamed it on the fact I was overweight, how convenient. I am now suffering from issues I never had before he operated on me. I will never go back to him nor uva for that matter.

Spent less than five minutes with me reviewing my pain and issue. No empathy, terrible bedside manner and had 0 solutions to my problems. Sent me back to pain management doctor who referred him to me. Waste of time and money seeing this doctor and their practice. Would highly recommend going somewhere else, not sure who hires these people but they need to re-evaluate their hiring process, because this man is just not nice.

This past August Dr. Helm preformed surgery to relieve pressure on nerves on my L4/L5 discs. He and his staff did a stupendous job and I left the hospital hours after the surgery. It is now December and I am fully recovered, and life is good. Would recommend Dr. Helm and his staff for surgery.

Dr.Helms didn't stay long he didn't seem interested but he did order more test I'm waiting for the results. I met him in their Harrisonburg office which they had issues with downloading my MRI. Which I thought he would have looked at before hand. It wasn't a good visit he also didn't care that I was in severe pain he referred me to pain management.and walked out saying he'd didn't want to get me addicted to anything. I will see next visit how he act
