List of James M Ecklund Md's Reviews
Dr. James Ecklund, MD and Megan Vaughan, PA , along with Dr. Ali Ganjei (EMG) were fantastic and I highly recommend their expert medical and patient relations. The INOVA Medical Group neurosurgery East ICPH group was easy to work with and understand. The team of experts and highly experienced staff are beyond supportive and focused on me as a patient, especially during the COVID pandemic. After a series of physical exams, consultations , CT scans and multiple MRIs they were able to pin-point the specific areas of medical and surgical considerations. After surgery and extensive physical therapy along with daily exercise, I feel I am on the right path for full recovery. I can’t thank Dr. Ecklund and his team enough for all that they have done to improve my mobility and relieve my severe back pain. Thank you so very much !
Three weeks ago Dr Ecklund and his team performed a laminectomy on my L4-L5. Every stage of my experience pleased me beyond my expectations. His office staff is prompt, friendly and efficient. Ditto his nurses. Dr Ecklund’s PA, Megan, is outstanding. She guided me through my test results and explained things to me clearly and thoroughly. Dr Ecklund is experienced, professional and a talented surgeon. I walked out of the hospital free of pain and took Tylenol for about five days afterwards.
Follow up after surgery is horrible. Have left numerous messages and sent and email with no response. I originally left the above review shortly after my surgery. Wow- how I wish this surgeon's shortcomings would have ended there. Now my situation is requiring attorneys and the VA Board of Medicine. I complained for months of worsening pain, tingling and numbness in the left side of my neck right down to my left hand. I was constantly told by Dr. Ecklund that I just needed physical therapy and that there was "nothing surgically wrong" with me- even though no tests were done to prove this. So here I am, a month post-surgery to correct what Ecklund did not do. My new surgeon showed my husband and I the results of several tests that showed if my spinal cord had been properly decompressed with my original surgery by Ecklund, I would not be having the issues I was having. This was proved when my most recent surgery was done- which had to be much more serious because the original surgery was not done correctly. It's sad because Dr. Ecklund is a very nice and personable Man. Unfortunately, his willingness to accept the slightest possibility that he may have made a mistake and that something may have been wrong with me after surgery put me through almost 20 months of pure hell and agony. All he would have had to do was to follow through with a simple CT Scan or new MRI to see how bad my condition was after I trusted him to fix it. Obviously, not everyone will have the same experience with the same doctor every time. I loved seeing Dr. Ecklund, until he started to dismiss my symptoms. Obviously, my experience only started with poor follow up after surgery and has now brought me to the point of everything from legal to medical board involvement- on top of permanent nerve damage and pain that I should not have to deal with at 46 years of age.
Dr. Ecklund saved my life with an emergency spinal fusion of my t10-l3. I was diagnosed as a paraplegic on Oct 2 2018 but now 3 months later and the day of my follow up I’ll be walking into his office with a cane.
He saved my life while I was active duty military. The Very Best neurosurgeon on the planet!
He saved my life while active duty military. He is the best.
He saved my life while active duty military. A very caring and intelligent doctor.

Now after 20 months of agony, a new surgeon finds Ecklund did not properly decompress my spinal cord and I'm left with permanent nerve damage. All I can do now is count on the medical board and attorneys to fix it.

Selection Criteria
All the information you see here is based on our analysis of internet reviews across the seven major review platforms most used by consumers during their healthcare provider selection. The platforms we selected are Google, WebMD, Yelp, HealthGrades, Facebook, RateMDs, and Vitals. The analysis algorithm uses the compiled data of average score, recency of reviews, number of reviews, and the sentiment expressed in the written comments. It then assigns weight to each parameter based on the available research on how consumers use reviews in their doctor selection process. This report is designed to help identify the doctors with the best overall review score in an area and does not reflect the doctors' competence.
