List of Steven S Hughes's Reviews
Dr. Hughes and his surgical team are top notch, keeping my family well informed with well written documentatiin and answering any additional questions. The result of my surgery would only be possible with Dr. Hughes' coordination and expertise from start to finish.
I first became a patient of Dr Hughes around 7 years ago. Fast forward a bit and I have since relocated a few hours south of the northern Virginia region. Unfortunately I have another similar but unrelated back issue which is again extremely painful and ever so inconvenient to my daily family, sporting and profesional life. I had received a very slow and not so confident answer from a local surgeon where I reside currently and I immediately knew I needed a 2nd opinion. From my 1st moment meeting Dr. Hughes to surgery and through to my follow-up appointments, I received nothing but the best and most personalized care I've had to date with any major health procedure. I made my appointment and from the moment I arrived I was delighted to see that Hughes office staff were every bit as professional & helpful as they were several years before. Unlike some other offices and Surgeons (which I will not name) Dr. Hughes and staff will inspire confidence in their work and their assessments from the very start. Not only does Hughes explain each situation in full detail, from possible causes to recovery plan end to end, he speaks professionally yet direct so as to make the entire process transparent and understood. His staff is also on the ball in every way you can imagine. Another office I dealt with simply allowed me to do guess work with which documents I'd need for my assessment, while Hughes office had either prepared those docs for me already or contacted me directly to inform me exactly what documents and imaging artifacts I would need to provide, leaving zero guess work for me (how would I know otherwise? I'm not the medical professional here). If you are having any issues with spinal/ general back / or sciatic pain, do yourself a huge favor and get an appointment with Dr. Hughes. You will be glad you did, I know that I am!
Dr. Hughes is personable and easy to talk to. He listened to my concerns and answered questions clearly. He has a pleasant, relaxed attitude which I appreciate. Dr. Hughes is knowledgeable and confident in his surgical proficiency. After meeting with him, I cancelled a previously scheduled appointment with another spine specialist. I am confident OrthoVirginia and Dr. Hughes can provide caring, competent treatment to resolve my current medical issues.
After almost two years of being misdiagnosed, multiple doctors and the worst pain I have ever experienced I found Dr Hughes. Our first appointment was better than expected. I was scared and nervous about having back surgery for a bulging disc in my L4-L5 to S1 nerve root. Dr. Hughes was kind and friendly and scheduled my surgery right away. When I arrived for the surgery, the team was so friendly and helpful.Dr Hughes came over to talk to me before the surgery and eased my nerves. From the moment I woke up from surgery, all the pain in my leg was completely gone! I was up and walking the same day. It has been two weeks since the surgery and I feel like a new person. I am so very thankful I found Dr Hughes and his team. They are wonderful!
Excellent
The worst , doesn’t even examine you or listen . Very arrogant
Dr. Hughes has been so great through this experience. My husband 1st saw him on June 30th of this year with unspeakable pain in his leg, Dr. Hughes was able to quickly evaluate him and get him on the right track. He performed surgery on him within 2 weeks of our initial appointment, which was very successful. My husband is currently in recovering well. Dr. Hughes made us feel comfortable and secure with his recommendations. My husband refers to him as "The Man".
Dr. Hughes and his team saved my life. I suffered for the better part of a year with increasingly debilitating sciatica that affected my ability to sit and eventually sleep - two of my favorite things in the world. I had exhausted a range of therapies over the course of eight months before being referred to his office. Dr. Hughes accurately diagnosed my issue and spent the time needed to address my questions and assuaged any apprehension I had pursing surgery. Approximately two weeks from my first appointment I was in for a microdisectomy. As I emerged from the anesthesia, I was not only told that the surgery was successful but, more importantly, I experienced it myself as I was able to sit through the discharge process and ride home without a hint of the previously excruciating sciatica pain. Each day since the surgery has been consistently better than the last to the point that I am now pain free and enjoying life again in ways that I had once feared may not be possible. In short, I want to express my sincere gratitude to Dr. Hughes and colleagues that helped me through the process and gave me my life back. I am forever grateful.
Dr. Hughes gave me my life back after treating my debilitating sciatica. I felt cared for, listened to, and my concerns were addressed. He has a great team, too!
I suffered with sciatica from December of 2020 until July 25th 2022, the day Dr. Hughes and his team did a microdiscectomy of L5S1. I’m going to tell you dear reader, you need to be invested in doing the work of self care with exercise and strength training such as planks, wall sits, bridges, bird dogs ( virtually no equipment needed for any of these btw). I’ve had in my opinion as a 56 year old woman an incredible recovery. I believe this to be true because I was my own best advocate and did what I could do to both prepare and recover from this surgery. Dr. Hughes is a fantastic surgeon, and well sought after so you may have to wait on occasion regarding appointments.I believe my outcome was worth a few minor delays. I literally could not walk a mile without debilitating pain down my right side, and he asked at my last appointment prior to surgery “What’s the goal here?” To which I replied “I want to walk pain free to the stop sign at the end of my street, and back”. A simple 2 mile walk that had become impossible for me. I’d had 3 rounds of injections that did not work, so surgery was the last option. The entire staff at Fairfax Hospital were an absolute compliment to the surgery Dr. Hughes performed on July 25th. I was literally up and around that same afternoon and could already feel the difference in my right side. The next day I started taking short assisted walks. On the 4th day I started having healing pain with my nerves and tissue and that’s to be expected. On day 10,I returned to see Dr. Hughes and was fully released for bending, stretching, lifting ( using good form of course ). My acid test came yesterday on August 26th 2022, with a full day walking the terrain at Busch Gardens Williamsburg. I did all the coasters and walked 23,000 pain free steps. Thanks to Dr. Steven Hughes for performing my surgery. He’s a great surgeon invested in his patients.

Selection Criteria
All the information you see here is based on our analysis of internet reviews across the seven major review platforms most used by consumers during their healthcare provider selection. The platforms we selected are Google, WebMD, Yelp, HealthGrades, Facebook, RateMDs, and Vitals. The analysis algorithm uses the compiled data of average score, recency of reviews, number of reviews, and the sentiment expressed in the written comments. It then assigns weight to each parameter based on the available research on how consumers use reviews in their doctor selection process. This report is designed to help identify the doctors with the best overall review score in an area and does not reflect the doctors' competence.
