List of Bon Secours Pediatrics Of Mechanicsville's Reviews
The front desk staff and the nurse who administered the injection were both quite unfriendly, never smiling throughout our visit. The waiting room was not kid-friendly; it was very crowded and lacked a play area. The most distressing part of our visit was how the nurse administered the injection to our child, which felt rough and unkind.
Although some people have given this doctor's office poor reviews, we have always had a good experience! Dr. Garabedian moved to this location a few years ago and we have been with him for 12 years. He is the absolute best and my kids LOVE him so much! We live 40 minutes away but I would travel 2 hours just to keep him as my children's pediatrician. Also, the office staff have always been kind and helpful.
First, we called this office the week before giving birth to inquire about the availability of Dr. Tuohy. We were told at that time she was accepting new patients. One week later we were given an appointment with a different clinician in the office. We decided to go with the flow as our baby was only a couple days old and we wanted him to be seen. When we arrived at the office people were actively painting the hallways. The place reeked of paint. The NP was very nice but the visit wasn't very informative. Our son was losing weight and other than "keep trying to breastfeed" and "Come in for a lactation appointment in a week" we got no specifics about supplemental feeding. On the way out we inquired about getting an appointment with Dr. Tuohy and were then told she wasn't accepting patients... The second visit was more of the same except this time the office reeked of marijuana. It smelled like someone had smoked right before walking into work. My first thought was that it may be someone in the waiting room but, we quickly realized the smell was strongest in the receptionist office. At this appointment our son was now gaining weight but due to our own research on how to properly supplement with formula. Again, despite asking for specifics in regards to amount, frequency, etc nothing was given. "Come in for lactation consultation" The third visit was finally the lactation consultation. No bad smells this time. The consultation was with the NP we had previously seen the last two visits. Again, she was very nice but not very informative. Same info they gave us in the hospital but this was "hands off" she watched my wife attempt to breast feed for 45 minutes and gave us tips on positioning, which again we were already told in the hospital. Upon weighing our son again it was determined he had not gained weight since his last visit. I tried to discuss our supplemental feeding program with the NP in an effort to get more advice... she looked at me blankly for a second and then said "Cool." My wife and I were done at this point. This lactation visit cost us over $400.... We switched to Pediatric Associated of Richmond for our next appointment and thank God we did. The doctor answered all of our questions. Answered questions we didn't know we had. Gave us specific advice on how often to supplement and how much formula based on his weight. His next appointment he had gained a TON of weight. He is doing amazingly now and we are very thankful we switched. Save your time and money and go elsewhere.
Your child deserves better, unorganized and unreliable. They’re also rude, don’t bring your babies here. They don’t do same day sick appointments so you’ll be forced to take your child to the hospital for a breathing treatment when it’s just a little cold/sinus infection. Not everything is the flu and Covid!
I am never one to write negative reviews but when it comes to the safety and well being of children and infants it is imperative parents know the negatives. We brought our daughter to the practice for her 15 month visit after moving to the mechanicsville area and the DO we saw was very inattentive and rushed. She did not know the answer to the one question I had and made no effort to look it up or ask a colleague. She missed several vaccines that my daughter was due for including her second influenza vaccine which then landed her with a terrible case of influenza almost requiring hospitalization. The MA/nurse measured her height and weighed her with all of her clothes and shoes on for her well child check which is very inaccurate. The waiting room was dirty with candy and snack wrappers on the floor. The outlets do not have outlet covers on them which poses a major risk to young children. We saw a different provider when my daughter had an ear infection who we loved, and when we asked if we could switch to her for her next well child visit, the front desk staff was extremely rude when they relayed to us that she was not accepting new patients. We ultimately decided to leave the practice due to the negative experience we had. I would caution any parent considering taking their infant or child to this practice to look elsewhere.
My wife took the kids for their annual check up. They have been there for almost 2 hours. That's absolutely ridiculous. It seems like a common theme this past year based off other reviews.
I would give a zero star if I could. I sent a message to the nurse asking a question they replied back and said to come in offered a 2:10 appointment I confirmed they confirmed I showed up on time to the appointment and they informed me they sent a message canceling the 2:10 appointment and changed it to 9:50 which I never received I tried to look up the conversation on MyChart bc I never got the notification and they had taken the conversation off MyChart completely meanwhile my daughter never got seen.
I have brought all 3 of my children here, after being born at St Mary’s Bon Secours hospital. The transition is smooth if you’re considering this office for your new baby. We have seen Dr Schey as well as LaRosa (She is also lactation consultant!). They are wonderful, listen to all concerns and take your child’s health very seriously. The MA we usually see is also AMAZING. She is always so helpful and sweet with my babies! I am very sad that Bon Secours no longer accepts our insurance, and I now have to search for a new office.
I normally love this office. My 1 year old son sees Dr. Schey and he’s wonderful. We went yesterday to see Dr. Akins for a sick child appt. He had a fever and all the signs of strep, and had been exposed to strep last week. They told me his test was negative and to give Tylenol and he’ll be fine. She was nice but did not take my concerns as serious as I believe she should have and made me feel sort of like I was freaking out for nothing. I KNEW my son was way sicker than they led me to believe, so I took him to an urgent care this morning. He proceeded to test positive for flu, strep AND covid. The reason I am leaving this review is to let other parents know to always advocate for your child even if the doctors aren’t in the same boat as you.
I called because my daughter wasn't feeling well once they finally picked up it was "thanks for call BSP please hold" if someone is calling on a Saturday morning you should atleast ask them questions or let them say what's going on. On top of that this was my third time calling the first time on hold for 15 mins then I hung up second time 18 minutes and third time I'm still on hold and it's 15 minutes in counting I will be finding another doctor.

Selection Criteria
All the information you see here is based on our analysis of internet reviews across the seven major review platforms most used by consumers during their healthcare provider selection. The platforms we selected are Google, WebMD, Yelp, HealthGrades, Facebook, RateMDs, and Vitals. The analysis algorithm uses the compiled data of average score, recency of reviews, number of reviews, and the sentiment expressed in the written comments. It then assigns weight to each parameter based on the available research on how consumers use reviews in their doctor selection process. This report is designed to help identify the doctors with the best overall review score in an area and does not reflect the doctors' competence.
