List of Lawrence K Chang's Reviews
I was referred to Dr.Chang by my dermatologist because he felt Mohs surgery was the best option for a relatively small basal cell carcinoma on the side of my nose that I always covered with the small round band aids. My dermatologist explained that the wound would be closed by a plastic surgeon the same day. I had a consultation with a wonderful plastic surgeon, filled out the paperwork and he explained everything as far as his procedure and took pictures. The plastic surgeons office coordinated a date with Dr. Chang’s office and both offices called to confirm the date and time. The most bizarre thing to me was there was no consultation with Dr. Chang prior to the procedure or communication at all, so I didn’t know what to expect before, during or after other than what I had read online, and it was a bit unsettling. I show up nervously not knowing what to expect because it had already been a couple of months after the biopsy. I get there at 7:15, fill out my paperwork, my appt was 7:30, was called to the back around 8, met a nurse who offered more items to initial electronically, she then cleaned the area, took pictures and numbed it well. The doc came in and introduced himself and proceeded cutting away, cauterized it, said he hoped he got it all and left. The nurse dressed it with gauze and a ton of tape close to my eye, told me they’d call in about an hour which is normal for pathology. I was praying I didn’t have to go through that again as it was overwhelming because although I didn’t feel much other than the numbing needle you could feel pressure and actually hear the cutting and cauterizing. I was exhausted from anxiety. I go back in and met yet a different nurse who said he didn’t get it all and prepared me for round two. She took the bandage and all that tape off, draped a cape over half of my chest, numbed it and took pics again. This time I wasn’t fully numb when he started cutting so it hurt and the doc stopped and numbed it again, cut some more, cauterized it again and I could feel warm liquid running down my face and he wipes it away and after the nurse cleans my face, ear, forehead, neck and even the other side of my face! I prayed again and waited another hour for pathology. I met yet another nurse. (this was three or four by now) and she said it was clear, undressed it again, took pictures and shocked me when she said the hole was quite large! She proceeded to dress it again with tons of tape and sent me on my way. I felt the procedure was quite traumatic, very little communication, compassion or interaction at all, no less than three different nurses, and literally zero instruction. It felt like an assembly line for Mohs Surgery and a patient I met in the waiting area agreed. On the way to the plastic surgeons office my husband notices blood running down my neck. I look in the mirror and there was indeed fresh blood and even more dried blood all over to include all over the sleeve of my shirt on the opposite side of the wound! I clean it up and get to the plastic surgeons office at 1:00 pm so grateful this is almost over. They take me back and the nurse is prepares the tray of tools to stitch me up. The plastic surgeon comes in, removes the dressing and informs me they took a lot more than anticipated and showed me the wound which was now approximately 3”x 2”and very deep. There was now a huge hole on the side of my nose extending to half of my cheek! I was completely devastated and sobbing as this was not the outcome I expected. The plastic surgeons office was wonderful and encouraging but had to schedule reconstructive surgery 4 days later! He cut from my temple, under my eye, down my nose all the way to the nasolabial by my mouth! I looked like I had been in a terrible car accident, but he covered that crater and did a phenomenal job. Perhaps Dr.Chang is a good surgeon, but I didn’t even feel as though I was his patient. I never heard from him or his office since. Bedside manner, office personnel & nursing staff was night and day difference from the plastic surgeon. I don’t recommend. My visit with Dr. Chang was fairly quick and his staff were attentive and thorough. Dr. Chang is truly a patient first surgeon who was compassionate and understanding when dealing with my complex issues. He knew I wasn’t ready for what was ahead and he stepped back and let me reschedule even though it affected his schedule. I recommend him highly.
Excellent Dr.Chang is.Caring very good. Highly recommend.
I was scheduled by this office for the Mohs procedure. Came in for that appointment and was told that the game plan had changed. No Mohs procedure, now Dr Chang tells me he wants to use a chemotherapy cream instead. Why schedule me for a specific procedure, and send info to me in the mail regarding that procedure and how to prepare for my appointment, and then change the game plan on me? Feeling very unsure now about using this chemo cream, which is a very strong drug, when the cancer could have been safely removed by the Mohs procedure with a much higher success rate! I do not like how this office and this Dr handled my cancer treatment. I was scheduled by this office for the Mohs procedure. Came in for that appointment and was told that the game plan had changed. 30 second check...yep take the stitches out...hours later the wound opens up wide bleeding. Zero stars should be assigned.
Dr Chang is an outstanding Dermatologist! He treated me at Newport News office. He is confident, caring and kind. I highly recommend his services.
Not sure why anyone could complain! He was caring and thorough. His staff was incredible. He ran on time and explained every step of the way. Totally recommend his practice.
What a great experience! As a new patient I felt I was in good hands the entire time!
Responded to texts regarding post-surgery questions within minutes, and promptly scheduled follow-up visits at my convenience. Dedicated, approachable, excellent communicator, goes the extra mile to ensure quality patient experience.
Dr. Chang is an excellent surgeon. He is also friendly and nice to be with. He actually gave me his cell phone number in case I needed to contact him. !! Imagine THAT!!

All the information you see here is based on our analysis of internet reviews across the seven major review platforms most used by consumers during their healthcare provider selection. The platforms we selected are Google, WebMD, Yelp, HealthGrades, Facebook, RateMDs, and Vitals. The analysis algorithm uses the compiled data of average score, recency of reviews, number of reviews, and the sentiment expressed in the written comments. It then assigns weight to each parameter based on the available research on how consumers use reviews in their doctor selection process. This report is designed to help identify the doctors with the best overall review score in an area and does not reflect the doctors' competence.
