I was recently connected with Dr. Watson and his team under circumstances that were quite challenging and entirely unexpected. Despite contending with a number of medical ailments over the years, this was the first time I needed the care and expertise of a neurosurgeon. I’m very fortunate and grateful that Dr. Watson was the one I found myself working with. From our very first interaction in the hospital, through office visits, through surgery, through follow-up, Elizabeth (PA-C) and Dr. Watson provided me and my family with the best, absolute top notch care I could have possibly asked for. They are both exceptionally honest and transparent, incredibly knowledgeable, and beyond generous with the time they devote to their patients. They addressed countless questions from me and my family, always fully engaged, never once showing anything but a complete desire to reassure and provide comfort while being totally honest about the diagnosis. They promptly returned all phone calls post-surgery, Dr. Watson even calling me back on a weekend at 10 PM to confirm a symptom I was experiencing was normal. I’ve interacted with a significant number of doctors over the years and without hesitation will say Dr. Watson is simply one of the best. I would recommend him to anyone in need of a neurosurgical expert.

I am a surgeon. I have observed Dr. Joseph Watson operate at INOVA Fairfax Hospital on many occasions over the last several decades. He is a brilliant and kind physician and has the surgical techniques of the world class brain and spine surgeon that he is. I have often marveled at the miracles performed by this man. Then suddenly I went into septic shock and became suddenly paralyzed in both of my legs. I had abscesses all over my body from an infected hip replacement and bacterial in my blood. Worst, I had three epidural abscesses (infections involving the spinal cord area itself) which were compressing and depriving blood to my spinal cord. I was having a body wide infection and a stroke in my thoracic spinal cord causing my complete lower extremity paralysis. Thankfully, Dr. Watson was the “on-call” neurosurgeon the night I was in need. He emergently performed decompression of my spinal cord and drained the three abscess. He saved me from the permanent paralysis that often results from delayed treatment of my infection. He frankly told me that the veins on my spinal cord were already thrombosis (blocked) starving my spinal cord of oxygen. I am fortunate for having Dr. Watson “covering my back” that one awful night and keeping a compassionate and sagacious eye on me ever since
