List of Paul L. Penar's Reviews
Several years ago, I had a grand mal seizure for the first time. An MRI found a tumor in my brain. Dr Penar gave me a biopsy. After the biopsy, I waited for about two weeks for the results. Meanwhile, I continued having seizures. I finally called my primary care doctor, and he told me the results. I was diagnosed with brain cancer. It was grade 4. I went to a different hospital, and I’m glad that I did. That doctor told me to that I needed to have my tumor removed as soon possible, without doing a biopsy. He said that regardless of it being cancer or not, it needed to be removed. Ultimately, I survived but it was very close and I still have seizures. I believe that if I hadn’t had that biopsy, I wouldn’t still have seizures. I wish I had never seen Dr Penar.
Dr. Penar is wonderful! He did my first surgery back in 2011 and I have another one coming up in July. He is always pleasant to speak to and very informative. My recovery form my first surgery was amazing and I have no doubt that I will have the same experience again. I would definitely recommend him.
Dr Penar is an exceptional Dr that is very intelligent and clearly explained the information about my condition. His surgery on me was successful/professional and he was clearly concerned about me as a patient and as a person. For an later/additional issue I had his consultation was again clearly explained and he referred me to a different specialist due to the findings. Many other Dr’s (surgeons) at his level would (and have in my experience) “rush” to get me on their operating table. He again professionally deferred to another specialist who he thought was a better chance at a successful treatment plan for my condition. I can’t recommend him more. I have nothing but respect for him and his care.
Dr. Penar is excellent. He's careful and circumspect in choosing to do surgery - something that can be rare in a neuro*surgeon* (since that *is* what they do). He's been awarded a Top 100 Doctor in America distinction and is one of the primary doctors that the VP & LP Shunt manufacturers consult. He has done multiple brain surgeries on me and didn't give up on me... even though my case was particularly difficult due to rare underlying conditions. I worried that I would "mess up" his success rate numbers due to my rare medical condition and told him of my concerns. But he emphatically didn't care about that at all...only about finding a way to improve my health, pain, and quality of life. He was willing to carefully try something new with me to address the unusual difficulties I was having and he succeeded. He listens carefully, answers questions honestly and directly, and is easy to work with in partnering together for healthcare. I highly recommend him, if you find yourself in need of a truly good neurosurgeon.

Selection Criteria
All the information you see here is based on our analysis of internet reviews across the seven major review platforms most used by consumers during their healthcare provider selection. The platforms we selected are Google, WebMD, Yelp, HealthGrades, Facebook, RateMDs, and Vitals. The analysis algorithm uses the compiled data of average score, recency of reviews, number of reviews, and the sentiment expressed in the written comments. It then assigns weight to each parameter based on the available research on how consumers use reviews in their doctor selection process. This report is designed to help identify the doctors with the best overall review score in an area and does not reflect the doctors' competence.
