Excellent surgeon who is also caring, kind and very knowledgeable. He has operated on me several times with great outcomes. He has always made sure I had the best care for my condition, even if it meant referring me to other physicians. I am alive today because other doctors couldn't find out what was wrong, but he never gave up. I am fours year cancer free post pancreatic surgery. I would never go to anyone but him.

I was referred to Dr McDonald for a Fundoplication surgery. 2/3 of my stomach has herniated into my chest cavity. I need help. I had an appointment set for several weeks out for 10:30 am. One day prior to the appointment, the office called me asking if I could come in an hour earlier. I agreed. Upon arriving, I checked in. I waited patiently for an hour. Then I went back to the front desk they said, it wouldn’t be too long. I was called into the room. The nurse asked a few questions and then said it would be a short wait. I sat there for two more hours. When he finally showed up, he apologized. In all honesty, I told him that waiting 3 hours without anyone keeping me posted on what was really going on wasn’t nice. He started reading my folder for the first time. He seemed rushed. It’s hard to hear him. It seemed he just wanted one word answers. When I tried to talk I was interrupted. He asked if I had questions at the end. He then said he was going to send in the scheduler to set up a scope (because he doesn’t trust the previous Doctors work). Now I’m waiting again. After a time I gave up and walked out. I come from New Bern so that trip was a 7 hour day. I was angry. I called the office to let them know that after waiting 3 hours for help.....I left with no confidence. Dr McDonald called me back and let me know he didn’t want to be my doctor. I need help. I’m back to square one and Dr McDonald just cares about himself. I think he knows I’m in need of help (desperately) but, he’s not mending fences. Very bad experience.

I underwent bariactric bypass on June 1, 2018 with Dr. MacDonald as my Surgeon. He was very thorough leading up to my surgery and just as thorough over a year later. Dr. MacDonald is very concerned, attention driven, reliable, considerate, highly knowledgeable, very trustworthy, takes time to listen and also very dedicated. His Staff is very supportive and always a pleasure and blessing. I will always praise Dr. MacDonald, not for giving me my life back but giving me a new life. I always thank God for Dr. MacDonald.

Have never encountered a more arrogant or cold physician. He had not looked at test results from referring physician prior to our appointment. His office scheduled an information class with he or his partner and neither showed up. When I asked a question of his nurse conducting the session to ask him a specific question, she later informed me that hr refused to answer without another appointment. He also did not trust the reports from doctors and radiologists outside his practice and wanted to redo himself. Extremely disappointed after seeing other reviews.

Straight forward doctor, tells you what lt is and what to expect. Did a great job for me removing my gallbladder.

I HAD BEEN EXPERIENCING STOMACH DISCOMFORT AFTER EATING FOR 18 MONTHS. THE ONLY THING FOUND VIA CATSCANS AND XRAYS WAS A HIATAL HERNIA WHICH WAS DISMISSED BY A GI DOCTOR AND MY ATTENDING PHYSICIAN AS THE CAUSE OF MY ISSUE. I VISITED ANOTHER GI DOCTOR AND SHE TOLD ME MY ISSUES WITH DISCOMFORT AND AND VOMITING AFTER EATING WERE DUE TO THE HERNIA. SHE GOT AN APP'T WITH DOCTOR MACDONALD. DOCTOR MACDONALD WAS HAVING A SERIES OF TESTS PERFORMED IN PREPARATION FOR SURGERY WHEN I EXPERIENCED A VOLVOLUS, STOMACH ROTATED 180 DEGREES AND WENT INTO MY CHEST. HE PERFORMED SURGERY TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM. SINCE SURGERY I HAVE NOT EXPERIENCED ANY ISSUES WITH DISCOMFORT AFTER EATING, NO ACID REFLUX ISSUE, NOR INDIGESTION. DOCTOR MACDONALD EXHIBITED CARE AND COMPASSION TOWARD ME BEFORE AND AFTER SURGERY. THANKS TO HIM I CAN NOW EAT WITHOUT FEAR OF ISSUES AFTER EATING. BILLY BOWEN

He was excellent when I had gastric bypass surgery with him 10 years ago and I remain as impressed and grateful to him as I was then. Without a doubt, I would recommend him and not hesitate to use his services again. What more could I want...a personable, intelligent and caring physician with a great staff (Bobbie has been there all this time) and excellent results.

Dr. MacDonald is an amazing physician/surgeon. He is very skilled and methodical in what he does. For anyone considering bariatric surgery, he is the ONLY ONE I would consider. I have had ZERO complications from my surgery. Follow-up care is excellent. The whole office is very professional and easy to work with.

I am a physician. My son called to tell me that he was in the ER at Vidant and that he needed surgery. I live 525 miles away. Dr. MacDonald was very kind, intelligent and skilled. My son had a rare surgical emergency that was not a typical presentation. The GI doctor got it wrong and the radiologists didn't figure it out either. If you need a caring, smart, gifted physician/surgeon, Dr. MacDonald is the right person. I recommend him. He saved my son's life.

He was not interested in my care after my procedure and acted as if my need for post op care was an inconvenience and irritated him. Would never even see this surgeon again, not even for an ingrown toenail and would never recommend him to anyone I cared about. Would have selected zero stars if I could.
