Daniel Guehlstorf Md's Online Review Report Card

I had a slip and fall accident at a business in which my ankle was twisted. I was in pain and limping so I made an appointment with Dr. Guehlstorf. Dr. told me he ordered an MRI so I called the facility to schedule the test. I was told the facility did not receive the order. Dr.'s office told me they DID send the order but the facility denied it. After going back and forth several times I asked the Dr.'s office for a copy of the order so I could take it to the facility myself. The Dr.'s office refused to give the order to me. Some of the Dr.'s staff were openly hostile to me. One nurse sternly told me to stop having accidents. In the end I never got the MRI.

I’ve seen him twice for extreme Achilles pain. Each time he spent less than one minute with me. Not only was he short and uncaring, he never even looked at my Achilles. Those appointments were expensive, extremely disappointed.

I couldn't wear shoes with heels before surgery and after I can't even wear flip flops. Dr. Guehlstorf and his PA Paul seemed concerned about my issues at first. Before surgery: 1) My left big toe dropped down after nerve damage and was numb. 2) My second and third toes curved slightly to the right. 3) stress fracture on top of my foot from issue #1. After surgery: 1) After fusing my big toe to a more neutral position and not drop, it lasted six months then returned to dropping. 2)My two toes curving were pinned to straighten them and tendons repositioned to prevent relapse, 6 weeks after surgery, the pins were removed and the very next day my toes started to curve and reverted to pre-surgery position. 3) The two toes above are now numb and stick up above my big toe preventing me from wearing flip flops or sandals. 4) The bottom of my foot now causes me constant pain when walking and I now walk with a noticeable limp. Dr. G told me there was nothing more he could do for me and PA Paul was angry and rude when I complained about outcomes.

Before surgery I couldn't wear shoes with heels and after surgery I couldn't even wear flip flops. I went to Dr. Guehlstorf May of 2019 because of foot pain in my left foot and ankle. PA Paul and Dr. G confirmed current pain was stress fracture caused by my big toe dropping and the next two toes turning to the right all caused by nerve damage. They suggested surgery to correct the two toes curvature and fusing the big toe to maintain a neutral position. We agreed to surgery after researching the issues and we provided previous ankle surgery info detailing nerve damage to big toe requiring nerve being buried in the bone. Day of surgery the 2 different anesthesiologists were not aware of the nerve damage and Dr. G. seemed to have no recollection either???? ALOT of pain following surgery and 6 weeks after surgery PA Paul removed the pins and said everything looked great. The very next day I woke up horrified to see my two toes curving back to where they were before. I immediately called the office and PA Paul rudely and angrily told me it couldn't possibly be true and implied I was lying. I went to the office, waited an hour to see Dr. G and yes they were turning already. He seemed shocked and told me he didn't know why but showed me how to use tape to pull them back (of course it didn't work but at least I was out of the office). It's been 9 months and I have more pain, my toes still curve right, my big toe still drops and my second and third toes are numb and sticking up making wearing any shoes but sneakers nearly impossible. Dr. G told me there was nothing more he could do. Total expensive mistake I will pay for the rest of my life.

My experience was awesome. DR. Guehlstorf is a top notch surgeon....he is the best.

Rushed environment with P.A Paul who does not listen and has incredibly poor listening and follow through skills. Issues with possible nerve damage from tight cast after telling them when it was put on, and several days after that it was too tight. It is hectic, stressful, and near impossible to get in. Was told consistently they are in surgery and no one is available to take calls, answer questions, or do follow up. Nothing is explained. They seem to be in it for the surgery $ and after that patients can kick rocks.

Coming from a recommendation, I am almost embarrassed to discuss my feelings of this provider with the person who made the recommendation. This physician could care less of the symptoms I was experiencing or feeling because it didn't fit into the "cookie cutter" diagnosis he had pre-determined. Does not seem to understand pain, pain tolerances, or appreciate the true nature of the symptoms, especially if there is no obvious diagnosis. Orders a bunch of expensive tests without discussing the findings. When conducting follow-up appointments, he doesn't take the time to listen, orders more tests, then sends his PA in for clear cut instructions with a pre-determined plan without any input from the patient. Very disappointed. If you are experiencing pain and discomfort without a ABSOLUTE reason why, this is not your physician - could care less.

Dr. Guehlsdorf performed a repair to a 3" split tear of the perineal brevis tendon in my left ankle and tightening of the ankle ligaments in Oct '18. The recovery and results exceeded my expectations. After 4 weeks in a non-weight bearing cast and 3 weeks in a CAM boot I was able walk with limited pain and stiffness. 8 weeks post surgery I was able to hit golf balls on a range with no pain. This was done with a lace up ankle brace to provide support-the outside of the left ankle takes all the "torque" of a right handed swing. I had been told by physical therapists and through a second opinion, that recoveries could take 6-12 months. I feel I'm fully recovered in less than 3 months. Dr. G is a highly skilled surgeon who's operation on my ankle exceeded my expectations.

Dr. Guehlstorf is one of the most respected doctors in the group as well as the best with bedside manner. He was very supportive and made sure I was comfortable with the treatment I was given. He also followed up and gave me suggestions on how to help it heal at home. Could not recommend him enough.

Here for 2nd opinion, it would have been nice if any of the staff took the time to read my history notes. I was not comfortable here, all of the staff was rushed, somewhat cold. The doctor never smiled, explanations were minimal. I'm glad I had another person there to ask a few questions. He is a well respected physician, too bad it's an uncomfortable patient environment.
