I liked Doc Hu even though it took a little bit to understand him, but he was clear in his assessment and diagnosis
Dr. Hu is very UNavailable. He does not respond to urgent or emergency health issues. He does not respond to concerns about medications. I have only been able to communicate with him through his nurse. I am dissatisfied with this provider due to the lack of care that I receive for my complex medical history.
So unhelpful and unsympathetic.

I've been a patient of Dr. Hu since 2013. All universities, even private ones, bill the patient twice for a visit, once for the doctor, and once for the use of the clinic. Medicare allows this. Hopefully your insurance will cover it. Medical schools like UCI have residents that will see the patient first if the doctor you are seeing is a teaching professor, like Dr. Hu. About half the time, a resident sees me first and takes my history, then Dr. Hu comes in and spends as much time with me as needed, one on one. He's never made me feel like he's in a rush. I've never waited 2 hours like some of these reviews say. I appreciate his expertise and his knowledge.

Dr Hu is excellent, the negative reviews are based on lack of knowledge.1. All Hospitals and Doctors Bill separately. It is the law! Make sure they have your insurance information.2. If your hospitalized tell your nurse to contact him right away to come see you.3. I did not wait at all to get in for my appointment. All appointment issues corrected.HE CURED ME! He is professional and knowledgeable very nice and friendly. His practice is one that wants to find new treatments so he participates in studies too. The nurses are terrific!
Great physician who cares about his patients

I am writing a review because I saw that Dr. Hu received some poor ratings, some of which I think can be attributed to being affiliated with the UCI Medical Center and the way they bill. When Dr. Hu saw my son, I was very impressed with how clearly he explained everything. I am the type of person who asks a lot of questions and I usually go to the doctor with a list that I have thought out ahead. This was the first time ever that I did not have to ask my questions because Dr. Hu very methodically answered everything with a very clear line of thinking, and explained it so that we could understand. The billing is strange to me, as some of the other reviews have mentioned. You are billed for the physician and then the facility. But I have noticed that when my son went to another UCI doctor, an orthopedic surgeon due to tendinitis, the bill was around $500 for ten minutes. I don't really know how it works but I am wondering if maybe that physician chose to include the "facility fee" in her fee. I think this has something to do with the hospital finding a way to charge more, sort of like the airlines and baggage fees.
I've been seeing Dr. Hu since 2010. I think he is a nice and competent doctor. His staff is really nice. My biggest problem has always been with the wait which has gotten a lot better since 2013 as I learned to always request first appointment of the day. I continue to stay with him because he has my medical history. However, the way the office bills has always been a pet peeve of mine. Like I previously mentioned, you will get one bill from him and another from the hospital for the use of facility. I never understood it but I put up with it because I only see him twice a year. I went again in January for my bi-annual check up. And that was all it was, just to go over my blood test result. However the bill had 3 items on it - 1 for medical visit and 2 for X-Rays that I never received! His bill was for $576.00. The bill from the hospital included Clinic Visit (this is for the use of Dr. Hu's office space) and 2 charges for X-Ray Services I did not receive! Yes, whatever items are on the doctor's bill, the hospital will bill again on theirs. This bill totalled $983.00! This is pure fraud to bill for services I never received! They are counting on patients not checking their claims! I will be calling my insurance company in the morning. I will also report to the medical board. This is so wrong! I will be switching doctor as well.
I would not recommend Dr.Hu. He WAS my mom's liver doctor. My mom was recently in the hospital for H.E. at UCI, and Dr. Hu didn't even come see her or check results of any blood work during her 5 day long hospital stay despite his office being in he same parking lot and despite her liver being the cause of her hospital stay. Her discharge paperwork said to schedule a follow-up with Dr. Hu. She left messages with his office to schedule and appointment and they never called back. Eventually she spoke with his nurse and she told my mom "Dr. Hu has sick patients and he couldn't see her until the end of November". Keep in mind my mom was in a coma a few days before this phone call because of her liver. The nurse then said "Dr. Hu said he's ok with you finding a new liver Doctor". Can you believe that!? This is just one of the things that is awful about this doctor. Long wait times and the language barrier are two other hurdles. He also avoids questions and gives vague answers. Do yourself a favor and find another liver Doctor. Your health is more important than he makes it out to be.
Bad experience ever!!!!! The cost of seeing him is so expensive. The charges were so ridiculous. The waiting time to see him is so long. Took almost 2 hours or sometime even longer to see him. He even misinterpreted my ultrasound result.
I never bother to write review on any thing but I can't stand with this doctor and this clinic. I have to write a review in the hope that other people can aware of this doctor and this clinic. First complaint is the cost of visiting this place. It is a rip people of clinic. First visit was $800 something for consultation, second visit was $340 something for seeing him plus $140 something for clinic service. It was a follow up visit. Third visit was the same cost as the second visit. And i went there just to get the lap result and listen to what he said about the result. He didn't even check on me or anything. Second complaint was the waiting time. Each time, It took about 2 hours to get to see him. Third complaint was the result of my lap test. First he said I had a lesion on my liver. He wanted me to check again in 6 months to see if it got bigger. I went in in 6 months to have the ultrasound and then went to see him again. And he didn't even talk about the lesion on my liver until I asked him and he said he didn't find any lesion on my liver. This doctor's practice is so careless and how he can care about patient!!!!!!!!!!!
I've continued to see Dr. Hu because he is a well-known and well-respected doctor. I like him and his staff, just didn't like the long wait. However, in the last 3 years, his practice has improved quite a bit. I still try to make an 8:00 am appointment and the wait is very reasonable (10 mins or so). I also requested not to have any internship doctors so I can get in and out in about 40 minutes. He know has an office in Costa Mesa as well. If you are looking for a Hepatologist or Gastroenterologist, don't hesitate to contact his office. He is a great doctor with great bedside manners.
I saw this doctor for a simple procedure. Wait time 2 hours 30 minutes. Patient beware their are better doctors out their then this doctor who treat you without any respect by making patients wait forever. Stay clear away from this doctor. Their process of reviewing patience is dumb. You see 2 people and before you see the doctor so this means you discuss personal medical conditions 3 times with different people. My worst doctor experience ever. I hope his practice is reading these complaint s but I am sure they don't care. They just care to bill you two times for treatment. One for seeing him and one for using his office. Dumb huh yep. Beware of this. Not sure if this billing practice is fraud or not.
I've thought of changing doctors for the same reason. The wait can be as long as 2 to 2.5 hours. Today it was 1 hour and 36 minutes until I saw him. I honestly don't know what to make of this. At times, I wonder if this translate to a general lack of care. If I was to do it over again, I would definitely not start seeing Dr. Hu. Now, it is tough to change because he knows my entire case history.
Be aware! When you see Dr. Hu, you'll get 2 bills; one for physician's fee and one for facility fee. Yes, you heard it right. They charge you for using the office where the doctor practices his medicine. RIDICULOUS!!!
I think Dr. Hu is great but I hate the whole experience at this office! Why do doctors think their time is worth more than ours? Why do they schedule 4 patients in a 15-minute slot? And when the first appointment is at 9:00am, they don't show up until 9:30am. WHY?In the last 3 office visits to this office, I've had to wait more than an hour each time to see the doctor. First they called me in to just take my weight then sent me out to wait again. Once I got into a room, a nurse asked me some questions then leave. Then I waited for another 15 minutes before an intern came in to ask me more questions, the he/she left. Yet another intern came to talk to me for 5 minutes then she/she left. Finally, after another 5 -10 minutes or so, Dr. Hu came in to go through the exact same questions again. C'mon! I don't need to see 3 doctors. I just need to see 1! Today, my appointment was at 10:3am to go over some lab (blood work) results. I didn't get called to get weighted until 11:40am. I had already complained to the front desk just before I got called, so they sent me to the room right away. The nurse took my blood pressure and pulse and left. My timeline was as followed:10:20am - 11:40am - waiting in the waiting room.11:40am - 11:46am - Nurse taking blood pressure and pulse and asked a few questions.11:46am - 11:52am - Wait for the doc11:52am - 11:58am - Talked to the doc11:58am - 12:04am - wait for the nurse to discharge me12:04am - 12:15am - go over discharge paper and make another follow up appt. For almost 2 hours, I got to see the doctor for 6 minutes. They didn't send any interns to see me this time because I had complained to the nurse, too. Dr. Hu was very apologetic, however, I could not excuse them after repeatedly having to wait more than an hour to see him.Yes, sometimes patients take longer to treat. And I can understand if this happened once or twice in the last 4 visits, but not ALL 4 visits!!! He told me to make the first appointment of the day, so I made my next one at 8:00am. I will see how long I have to wait and then update this review. He said he agreed they needed to improve. I hope they do!
