Dr. Grau was my surgical oncologist who just performed a prophylactic bilateral mastectomy. She is a wonderful, very thorough and compassionate physician. She attentively listened to all my questions and concerns.

Dr. Grau takes her time with you and gives you her entire attention. She has answered all of my questions and provided an abundance of information for me.
Unless you want to take the risk of having the lower trunk if your brachial plexus and your supraclavicularu nerves damaged leaving you with searing nerve pain and unable to use your arm, find a better surgeon. You want to survive breast cancer and get back to your life.
That is one person writing the negative review over and over and over. I recommend she seek therapy. Everyone else can find more accurate reviews at Vanderbilt. Women facing mastectomies shouldnt have to wade through an unbalanced persons obsessive reviews.
I am a 40 yr old breast cancer patient. I was referred to Vanderbilt Breast Center when I was diagnosed. Dr Ana Grau had the first available appointment. I didnt know any of the doctors in this practice so I looked up her reviews. A cancer diagnosis is devastating enough but to read bad reviews on your prospective doctor is crushing. So if you are in the same situation I found myself 2 years ago, I want to encourage you and give you hope! Dr Ana Grau is an amazing surgeon. She is compassionate, kind, thoughtful, caring and competent. She performed my double mastectomy and lymph biopsy. I have not had a moment of complication. She and her practice has provided me with excellent care during my battle with cancer. I am thankful God lead me to Dr. Grau and the Vanderbilt Breast Center. So please dont let the one bad review cause you needless worry during this already trying time. You are in good hands. God bless you.
Woke up in terrible pain. Its never left me. She did procedures that were not discussed and were not needed. I had early stage breast cancer. She was way too aggressive and not careful. I was disabled by her. I should never have trusted her.
Dr. Grau operated and I didnt have cancer! She was so aggressive during surgery that she destroyed nerves, tendons, muscles that go to my arm fingers scapula and chest. She took almost 20 samples! She lied about risks. I have lost use of my arm, my job, my ability to do things, my life. I am bedridden due to the damage and pain of the surgery she insisted I needed. Find a doctor who knows what theyre doing and looks out for your best interest. Dont trust this doctor.
I was an early stage breast cancer patient. She tried to take all my lymph nodes even though none were positive. She dug into my axilla and severed many nerves. I woke up in excruciating burning pain that never left. I had to have another surgery by a peripheral nerve surgeon for the pain. They found surgical clips on many nerves including the median nerve and ulner nerve! These are large nerves that go to your arm. Dr. Grau denied causing pain and told me there was nothing she could do.
Did surgery with no evidence of cancer. She cut motor and sensory nerves and cut muscles. I am in constant burning pain. She ignored the pain for months and told me it would get better. I reported her to her boss and he called to say he had good news and bad news. The good news was I didnt need another surgery because nothing could be done to fix what she had done. The bad news was I would be in pain the rest of my life. There was no cancer.
I had stage 2 breast cancer. She did surgery and now Ive lost use of my arm and hand. She cut blood vessels and nerves. I had terrible blood flow to my arm after her surgery and had to get repairs done by a vascular surgeon to help with blood flow. Its still not nearly as good as it was before she did surgery but its better. The nerve pain is unbearable. I dont recommend letting her touch you. All of this was unnecessary.
Left with terrible burning nerve pain and loss of good use of my arm after she did surgery. Meeting Dr. Grau is the biggest regret of my life.
Cant work anymore because of pain from surgery that Dr. Grau did. My quality of live was taken from me because of her surgery.
I consulted with Dr. Grau for breast cancer surgery but she seems to be behind the times and talked about removing my lymph nodes. Ive found through my research and other consults that doctors try to preserve womens lymph nodes even if one or two sentinal nodes are positive to avoid Lymphedema and nerve pain. Some cancer centers do chemotherapy first to try to clear and preserve the lymph nodes. I wasnt impressed by how little she knew about recent breast cancer studies and didnt feel comfortable with her.
After surgery with Dr. Grau, I had burning pain in my chest and under arm that continued after a few weeks. I reported this to her and was referred to a pain clinic. This is not the compassion I expected.
Really bad experience I personally do not recommend this surgeon.
I agree with the some of the previous ratings and comments and I highly doubt they are written by the same person because I too experienced some of the things mentioned. This forum should not be used to undermine another persons comments or ratings or to make assumptions about who wrote them. Each person is supposed to talk about their own personal experience. If people were hurt they would know if a surgery caused it. To undermine others comments is immoral, mean, and rude. I will stick to my personal first hand experience. I had a breast cancer surgery performed by Dr, Grau. I was left with a lot of nerve pain in my chest and underarm. I also have a pretty bad scar. If you are thinking about having surgery for breast cancer, please research the internet for chronic pain and mastectomy or chronic pain and lymph node removal. You will see that it does happen. There are certain nerves that need to be carefully preserved by the surgeon during breast surgery. If the surgeon is in a hurry or not talented, the nerves can be damaged or cut and the patient is left with nerve pain. The last reviewer didnt even state what procedure they had done. Just commented about everyone elses experiences. Thats just mean.
Dr. Grau is an excellent surgeon, both technically and in terms of bedside manner. It is clear that it is the same person writing the negative reviews about her nerve damage. It is a shame that one person who had a bad outcome (probably not even due to the surgeon) is so angry and impacting other peoples decisions. Dr. Grau is unbelievablehave nothing but great things to say about her.
Does not take time during breast cancer surgery to preserve nerves. Damaged several nerves during surgery and wouldnt respond when I complained of pain. I would not recommend her to anyone. Either doesnt know what she is doing or doesnt care.
I put my trust in Dr. Grau and have regretted ever meeting her. She told me I needed a surgery that was totally unnecessary. She caused an enormous amount of nerve damage to my upper body. A year later the pain is still excruciating. This has been a nightmare. She never mentioned any complications to me when asked before the surgery. You want a doctor thats honest and that has a great amount of skill for your breast cancer surgery and you dont want any unnecessary surgeries when dealing with breast cancer. In my opinion, she is not skilled at all and Im surprised she works at Vanderbilt.
