Around late November, I began noticing black spots/patches on my tongue and on my gums. I wasn't sure if it was something to be worried about or not, but wanted to get it checked out so I wasn't carrying around low level anxiety. I booked with an ENT (specifically Dr Truong based off the reviews online), and saw him 2 weeks later. Dr Truong quickly eased my fears by letting me know they were normal hyperpigmentation spots. BUT he went above and beyond in asking me some additional questions about my skin tone (have I always been that way/my heritage) and energy levels, and ultimately ended up sending me to get my cortisol levels checked just to be safe. Turns out he saved my life by doing so! My results were 3x below the normal level. He referred me to a endocrinologist, who after many more lab tests, formally diagnosed me with Addison's Disease - a rare autoimmune disorder that affects the adrenal glands. From what I understand, Addison's can easily go overlooked and the longer you go without diagnosis the bigger the possible consequences. Dr Truong went above and beyond, and quite possibly saved my life!
