Ryan Madsen5/11/21Coming to avenues after detox as a client I was completely broken and didn’t know where I was headed in life and couldn’t see what was in the future for myself. I knew I had no other option to be sober and I needed help with my Mental health and Addictions. I was 23 and had been drinking and using drugs since the age of 13. I knew I was completely powerless. When I walked into the clinical building on my first day I had no idea what to expect. I was scared, alone, fearful, insecure and lacked the traits of what it means to be a man. I thought I knew everything but when in reality I had no answers to save myself. Avenues right away helped me feel like I amounted to something more. I knew this was going to be the best rehab for me. I was informed there was personalized care, Case Management, Depression Help, Family Involvement, Focused Treatment, Medical Care, Group Therapy, and a Strong AA/NA Network. I was told there was a 90 day rehab program, but I knew I wanted to be in treatment for six months. Early on as a client I was taught how to look within myself and pinpoint where my major emotional pain stemmed from. Every day I learned from Drug Counseling, Personal Clinicians, and Drug abuse treatment groups. I had an excellent therapist who truly listened to me and guided me down a road in life that I never knew I could create for myself. Each therapy session I was able to talk, listen, and discover the real person I was. My therapist/personal clinician had me know Avenues is the best rehab in the USA. I was also able to learn a lot about Life skill training from my therapist. The entire staff taught me how to live life free of insecurity and fear. The staff motivated me and motivated my peers which made the experience much more fantastic. Throughout the program I had my ups and downs, but because of how excellent avenues goes about teaching , I was able to cope and become a stronger and better individual. They taught me about faith based programs and how to keep personalized routines for the long term. I was able to ask questions, learn, and take note of ways to accept my own actions and mistakes in my life, and turn those around and work the 12 steps of AA. I personally chose to do the 12 steps, avenues was excellent with recovery programs because they taught me about all various recovery practices. I developed to be the man I am today because of the leadership, accountability, love, and support avenues offers. I graduated the program in 5 and a half months. I knew I wanted to come back to avenues but on the other side.I returned to avenues as an employee. I was blessed and proud to be working for the best rehab in America. I became a Behavioral Help Technician. It was a surreal experience to walk into the clinical building on the other side. Right away I was able to talk with clients and inform them about how the program is a affordable program, how the inpatient program is designed to have one succeed. What made the difference in being a BHT was all the knowledge I obtained as a client. Working for avenues I am able to help others achieve a healthy life of sobriety. Every client is different and every employee is different as well. The same people who once guided me down a proper path are now friends and resources to help me work my job to the best of my ability. The experience being a BHT is a motivating one. I get to learn more about how to connect with people and be a role model in the recovery community. I get to look back on my experience as a client and pick out major events that occurred to help relate with clients that are currently attending the avenues program. I believe that being once a client to now being a BHT I can help anyone who walks through the avenues doors to the best of my ability. It all comes down to willingness and a desire to look within ones self. I highly recommend Avenues Recovery for anyone who needs help. There are motivators, leaders, and friends here in this program. The last words I can tell to anyone who is reading this is that…. YOU ARE NOT ALONE.
