Dr. Hamid Djalilian, MD, UC Irvine Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery I am writing this review for two reasons. 1) There are not many doctors names that come up in yelp reviews for surfer's ear (exostosis) in Orange County, CA. 2) My experience and surgery with Dr. Djalilian and the UCI Otolaryngology Head and Neck office was excellent.I was diagnosed with surfer's ear (exostosis) in 2005 and put off surgery until 2018 when it got so bad that I could no longer submerge my head in a pool, swim or surf in the ocean, get on a plane, or get a cold without some kind of ear blockage, complication, or infection. Both ears were over 95% closed. I received a referral from my insurance and decided to search for a second opinion when the first doctor indicated that they still cut the back of the ear to perform the surgery. I searched the internet for Orange County Doctors who perform surfer's ear surgery and only a select few were found. Yelp produced very few results on the topic. Google reviews were a bit more helpful. I found Dr Djalilian and requested a second referral from my PCP. Here are the highlights:Referral process, confirmation, appointment scheduling, etc. went well. Most doctors' schedules are full 4-6 wks out. It was no different with Dr. Djalilian, but I was scheduled in a timely manner. During all of our appointments Dr. Djalilian was professional, friendly and genuinely attentive, he was engaged, he did not seem rushed, he asked a lot of questions, and he was informative. The office nurses, nurses' assistants, and doctors assistants within the ENT office were all great during every visit. The office is lucky to have Sonia and Melissa on their team. Maria of the UCI surgery scheduling center was also great.Several weeks down the road Dr. Djalilian performed surgery on both ears separately (7 - 8 wks between each ear). My first ear surgery (left ear) was performed at La Veta Surgery Center in Orange. My second ear surgery (right ear) was performed at the UCI OR in Bldg. 23 on the 3rd floor. I understand he employed the chisel method through the natural opening in the ear canal. It was minimally invasive. There was very little pain after the first few days post op. I experienced moderate chewing pain for the left ear and jaw pain for the right ear but these both faded by day 3 or 4. I had a silicone tube in the canal protecting the incision area and lining of the canal. I used antibiotic drops and cotton balls twice daily for approx. 2 wks. I had a bit of noise sensitivity off and on for a week but that has faded. After that, I could not even tell that I ever had exostosis or the surgery to remove it. Thank you Dr. Djalilian and staff. I highly recommend!NOTE: Positive & Negative reviews are all subjective personal perspectives. You have to go in with the understanding that the current system puts doctors in a time (and attention) crunch. Millions of people with medical conditions live in Orange County, the medical process takes time, and all doctors' offices are crowded! Dr DJALLIAN is extremely busy and that tells me that a whole lot of patients put their faith in him. Once you're a patient you will get in to see him and his staff quickly. I'd rather wait to be seen by the best. I found that the earliest appointment possible was the most favorable, and I would arrive 30-45min early.
