COVID-19 test review ONLY:TLDR: This is a completely overburdened site with a 11+ day wait for results. If you can find a way to get to Dodger Stadium, 100% do that instead of going here. If this is your only option, read on...Last Monday I found out that I was potentially exposed to COVID-19 three days prior. I isolated myself from my housemates in my room and went onto the L.A. County website for free testing locations. I was relieved to find that there was a walk-in testing site nearby; I don't have a car and it was the only option for miles. I used the form on their website and received an email and text the next day confirming I should come in the day after (Thursday) for my appointment. Great!I arrive Thursday to find a line of about 7 people ahead of me, on the pavement outside. We're shaded by awnings and everyone is 6ft apart. It's fine. I patiently wait and listen to music... tapping my toes... the line starts getting bigger behind me... I've moved forward two spots in 30 mins. Eventually the very nice, yet clearly overworked, staff member asks everyone to move the line; it is starting to wrap all the way around the block. Now, only 4 spots that have any shade... about 25 people are standing and waiting in the heat of a late July mid-afternoon. The sun is beating down. People are trying to shade their faces with their intake forms. Others are squeezing in under the shade tents and ignoring social distancing because heat stroke seems worse. At one point I hear frantic yelling and emergency services are called to help someone further down the line who I can only imagine has succumbed to exhaustion. (I implore you to bring a hat.)The staff are clearly trying their best. They rush out a chair for the imperiled person, let an elderly man with a cane sit inside, and even move their own shade tent to make a spot for one more guest, but people are suffering. I waited about 90 minutes with seven people ahead of me... by the time I left, there were about 20 people in the queue. I can only imagine what the experience might have been like for those with symptoms. After the wait outside, it was my turn to take the test. I stepped inside the room, got some hand sanitiser, was handed a swab, and kindly and clearly told the directions: put the swab all the way up each of my nostrils and turn it around. I handed it back and was told I should have my results in 3-5 business days. My original text exchange for my booking had said 3-4 days (without the "business" qualifier) so I was a little worried about the longer timeline, but the person on the text also said it could take up to 5. With the consideration that they are open on Saturdays, I figured it should be ready Mon-Wed. Not ideal, but I resigned myself to that fact that that's what happens when you don't have a car in Los Angeles... I head back to self-isolation and I wait.On Tuesday I haven't heard anything and can't get anyone on the phone, despite calling 8 times, so I bike over. There is the same snaking, overheated line of people... and a very overwhelmed worker. He says the labs are backed up and to try calling back on Friday. It is now Friday. I call in again; with no symptoms, I am hopeful to have the all-clear. Instead, I'm told none of the tests results from late July are in yet. "Try calling again on Monday." 11 days after my test.During the time I have been self-isolating in my room, people I know have driven to Dodger Stadium and had their results back in 1-2 days. Including on weekends! The silver lining for me is, it has now been 14 days since potential exposure, the time recommended to self-isolate. At this point, my results will be redundant.I understand that this health centre might be your only option and, in that case, I hope this review will provide some clarity on what to expect. If you can find a way to avoid this location, and find someone who is willing to drive you to a place with faster results, I implore you to take it... for public health reasons as well as your physical and mental wellbeing. It also might relieve some strain on the center so they can provide better service to those who most need it. Currently, it's an ineffective testing site, and I wish I had known that earlier myself.I gave this place a 5-star review because it seems like a non-profit doing fab work, and it's not their fault that they are completely overburdened in a pandemic! I cannot speak for their other services and their kindly staff seem to be doing the best they can, given how incredibly thinly stretched they are. I appreciate their work very much. But to be clear, I would give 0 stars to the city and county of Los Angeles' inequitable handling of this public health crisis. They need to provide support for establishing functional walk-in sites during this pandemic. Officials say that people have access to safe, free, and fast testing but, so far, "people" seems to only include car owners.p.s. Thankful to be free. Godspeed.
