I sometimes joke that Sequoia Hospital is my "second home." When my husband and I married and moved into our home in Redwood City in 1992, we never imagined that we would spend so much time getting to know our local hospital, yet we cannot say enough about the compassion and whole-person care that Sequoia Hospital has provided us. My husband experienced a life-threatening brainstem hemorrhage in 1996, and I was able to spend most of the 10 days that followed at his hospital bedside, helping him to become oriented to his new realities and witnessing the support that the team provided to him and to our family and friends. In 1998 and 2001, we spent some happier days in the maternity ward as I gave birth to our son and daughter at Sequoia, again receiving care that was incredibly respectful and supportive of our wishes for the experience of childbirth and experiencing the "before" and "after" results of the Birth Center renovation. My husband had medical and surgical treatments at Sequoia for shoulder dislocations associated with an old injury and regained excellent function. My son had abdominal surgery in 2015. At the time, I was using a scooter as I recovered from a foot fracture, and yet we have happy memories of his hospitalization including a video of the panorama of Fourth of July fireworks that we viewed from his hospital window the day after his surgery. In November 2018, I underwent mitral valve repair surgery at Sequoia Hospital. The group provided comprehensive care beyond anything that I could have imagined for the preparation, surgery, post-operative period and rehabilitation, so that I was able to return to my work and recreational activities including long-distance running. The financial counselors ensured that I was able to access the treatments that I needed without undue stress about the cost of care. I hope that a healthy future will leave Sequoia Hospital's rooms open for others. We are incredibly grateful for the people who create this fine hospital as we approach Thanksgiving in 2021.
